    Banding versus Bypass

I am an Rn who has worked with clients who have had major complications after a gastric bypass. I knew that I did not want this for myself. When I heard about the Lap Band, I knew it was THE right thing for me to do! Ironically, after jumping through all the hoops, going to the required classes and getting approval for the surgery from my insurance, I learned that I have a medical condition that is a contraindication to being banded. However, I am still a candidate for the bypass. :heh: Yes, I had a second opinion. Both surgeons, and also my primary physician have recomended that I have the roux-en-y. (It's not their anatomy that will be rearranged.) I am back to square one. What I have done - for now - is to join Weight Watchers for the umteenth time. I am trying my hardest. I've decided that I'll re-address the bypass issue in the Spring if I'm not doing well at my weight loss. Bandster at heart, Linda:think

    Upper GI

I had an EGD and an upper G.I. in the same day - I didn't have gas pains. The only REAL pain that I had was that after jumping through all the hoops to get insurance coverage for the band, it turns out that I have a condition that disqualifies me from having the surgery.

    Crying a lot today

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Some physicians just don't "get it". I hope you find someone who treats you with the dignity and respect that you deserve.

The 2 week wait begins...send me good vibes!

I'm so sorry about the denial. I am waiting to hear from my insurance....no news is good news??? My BMI is sitting at 39.8. They will also cover if it is 40 or more. I have made up my mind that I want this surgery and that I want it done asap. I do not like the waiting game.

    Minnesota Folks

I have done a lot of research on the Lap Band. I am hoping to have the surgery within the next couple of months. I have chosen Dr. Fortier for several reasons. Among them: He is the closest to my home and for frequent followups that was important to me. He has done more or these procedures than anyone in Minnesota. I've spoken with four women who have been banded by him and they are all very satisfied. He lives in Little Falls and does surgery in both Long Prairie and Morris. Anyone here have any experience with him?

Sorry - This is my first day here and I was, of course, starting at the beginning and reading the oldest postings...I'll figure it out eventually!

Hi Everyone, I notice that the messages here are all a bit old. I am meeting with the surgeon this Thursday. I have made up my mind that I want to do this. I have 100 lbs to lose. Now that the date is getting closer, I need some reassurance from those of you who have already had the procedure. Talk to me....would you do it again? Did you have any complications?
