Are our metabolism screwed forever?
mikeross posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know eating at a huge caloric deficit makes are metabolism slow down to a crawl. Does eating such low calories mess up our metabolism forever? Will we be able to eat 2000 calories like normal people do at some point. Will our metabolisms every become really fast because of the foods we choose to eat and exercise? -
You look very happy... congrats

Adding more calories, losing more weight
mikeross replied to christieouchley's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am eating upwards of 1800cal a day and still losing consistently every month. Eating 800 calories per day is damaging your metabolism. I am still at awe that most surgeons apply this low calorie diet to every WLS patient. -
Awesome job man especially considering your built that while eating at a caloric deficit. How tall are you and what was your starting and current weight now.

Keep at it and continue to change up your routine... keep your body guess. I would also advise you lift weights first then do your cardio. -

Considering you have to take 4 of these daily, coupled with the fact each one has 6g carbs, 24g worth of carbs just for a multi vitamin is to much IMO. -

yup, 170 is pretty spot on for you. What brand of Protein are you taking. costco now sells a special blend only sold at costco made by optimum nutrition. I know you are probably familiar with their gold stand protein but this is a similar blend with more bcaa`s and 6 more grams protein per shake. This new blend is only offered at costco stores... Not sure why just costo stores. I have been taking it for the last month and it taste great. Its vanilla milkshake flavor so its easy to add things to it to change the flavors up. Worth a try if your getting low on protein. -

Also wanted to point out that you are correct in the point you made regarding my protein intake. For my lean body mass it is actually about 50g to much a day. It reaches that high because I like drinking a protein shake before and after a workout. I have actually completely changed up my diet the last 3 weeks and have been eating more calories daily to get it up to where it is now at 1800. I have to sit back and rethink how I can hit my daily macros without taking in so much protein. With that said... I still believe my body absorbs a lot more than 80g a day. http://www.livestrong.com/article/480054-how-much-protein-can-we-absorb-per-meal/ -

can you show me where your read this. I have read a few different articles stating to keep protein intake to around 45-50g per meal max because thats all our bodies can absorb in an hour or 2. Your saying my body is struggling to absorb 80g a day. My Dr told me that when sleeve patients are advised to eat 60-80g protein a day that its actually the minimum requirement. If you can eat more then that its encouraged. Its pretty common knowledge in the fitness world that your should be eating about 1g of protein per lean body mass. Most people have more than 80lbs of lean mass on them. Most body builders are eating over 2g per lb daily. Would love to see a source regarding this 80g of protein daily... confilcts with so many articles I have read. -
tired of being lectured on here

I agree with everything you posted. Some people just under estimate how much they are actually consuming. I highly doubt a person is gaining weight on 1200calories a day. It makes more sense that that person was overeating for years, gained a lot of weight, started dieting at an extreme caloric deficit eating only 1200cal a day, destroyed their metabolism thus lowering their BMR and now not losing any weight eating only 1200cal per day. Your gaining because your BMR is now probably under 1000cal and your now eating at a surplus of 200cal per day. Losing weight is as simple as calories in vs calories out... eat at a caloric deficit and you will lose weight, thats a fact. You can blame it on genetics or emotional eating ect but fact is fact no way to excuse around it. -

16% body fat is awesome bud. My goal is go get below 15% and I will be a happy man. I think my sleeve is a little bigger then most. I have no issues eating 4-6oz of chicken or steak if I keep it moist when cooking. I find BBQing my protein, slow indirect heat, keeps my protein moist and tender. If I quickly grill it over direct heat I can`t eat nearly as much. I am now eating over 200g protein daily rather easily. I just started doing this about 3 weeks ago and it help break a stall I was in. What I do now is take 1.5 scoops of whey isolate per shake instead of 1 scoop. That`s 45g protein twice a day from shakes. I drink one shake about an hour before working out and the second one when I get home from my workout about 2 hours later. In the evening about an hour before bed I drink a single scoop of casein worth another 24g protein. So in shakes daily I am getting 114g protein. I actually like drinking shakes because I make so many different types and still look forward to drinking them. I use to eat at least 4-5 meals a day but since upping the shakes I eat about 3 meals and a snack or two if it fits within my macros. In each of my meals I make sure to have 4oz of protein for either chicken breast, top sirloin or salmon. For example I would take 1 8oz chicken breast and split it into two 4oz portions and that`s good for 2 of my 3 meals. 4oz of chicken breast is 26g of protein so that`s another 52g protein added to the shakes. With another 4oz serving of salmon of steak its around another 25g protein. That`s 191g of protein and I usually bring that up over 200g with a hard boiled egg, high protein kashi cereal or greek yogurt based salad dressing. I have actually upped my allowed carbs to 100g daily and am still losing. The biggest NSV for me is I am now over 1800calories a day and still losing. It took me about 6 weeks but I finally have gotten my metabolism back on track. Its a nice feeling eating this much and still losing. . -

This guy has been reconditioning his body. He is trying to stay the same weight but drop body fat. In this picture he weights the same in both pictures. Even though he is the same BMI in each photo you can clearly see the difference,,, this is why BMI is not a very good gauge. For very obese people it may be but once you start getting to goal its not that accurate IMO. -

BMI charts are just a quick tool to gauge size. Its not very accurate when you factor in lean muscle mass. With that said I would look into body fat percentages more so then BMI charts. You might be at a perfect weight on a BMI chart but also be carrying 30+% body fat. Get to a healthy BMI and under 18% body fat... big difference in appearance. -
Did some type of issue arise recently to make this recent change of the rules. I never saw an issue in the past... I guess a few members have been complaining about the women posting?
-
So women are allowed to read all of the post in this forum but if they have something informative to add they are not allowed?

I was cleared for exercise at 4 weeks. Just take it easy at first and listen to your body. If you want to play it safe wait till your 6 weeks out. With that said, Sit ups are not going to make your stomach smaller. You can't spot reduce fat. You need to lower your overall body fat percentage to make your midsection smaller. You do that by diet and cardio. You can continue to do ab exercises but you wont see any abs unless your body fat is really low.

There is nothing wrong with taking a supplement to curb your hunger. You have to figure out if its real hunger or head hunger. With that said I personally wouldn't take an appetite suppressor, although there is nothing wrong with them. I think you should embrace your appetite and start using that hunger to charge up your metabolism. All these low calories doctor prescribed diets are killing sleeved members metabolisms and its causing people to stall in weight loss, destroy their metabolism and keep you hungry... its a recipe for disaster and is not sustainable long term. Read up on how to boost your metabolism. I was eating less than 800 calories and stalling every other week. over the last 6 weeks I have slowly increase my calories to boost my metabolism. I am loosing more now at 1800cal a day then I did 6 weeks ago at 800cal. I get to eat more food and use my appetite to help me continue to lose and have shorter stalls.

I use to have issues but have regular BW once sometimes twice a day. At first I was taking benefiber and chia seeds in my protein shakes. That worked but tasted gross. I now make sure to eat one salad of leafy dark greens daily. I have no issues with only eating a salad. I notice if I don't it takes about 4-5 days to catch up to me and feel a little backed up... not to the point I feel like I need to take something other than start eating a daily salad again.

+1... This sub-forum is not very active to begin with. Restricting it to only male members will make it even less active and less informative... I think a woman's perspective is important in regards to some of these "male" questions and comments. Please take no offense, but why is a woman moderating this forum if women are not allowed to post here... kinda hypocritical don't you think. Based on the tread title I was 99% sure entering this thread that it was started by "fyre_storm"

There haters... focus on the positive things to come out of this WLS. Look into proper exercise, diet and work your sleeve. If your family is supportive, that's all you need, and that's all that matters... who cares what some jealous, insecure coworkers think.
