    August Band Crew!!!!!

:faint: Day 8 for me post band and that shoulder pain is miserable!!! Nothing helps me. I am about to overdose on gas meds. I would feel so much better if that pain was gone. My doc must have used 5 patient's worth of air....Where was that dentist's suction thing during my surgery?

    August Band Crew!!!!!

I am back from the dead. I had my surgery on 8/4 and it well pretty good. While they were in me they found a rather larger hiatel hernia much to my surprise. I had not had any symptoms which the doctor found strange. He was gracious enough to repair it and I awoke from anesthesia. Talk about no time to sleep! The nurse immediately got me up to walk to the bathroom. She then lead me down to x-ray for a quick barium swallow test. Being in the radiology field, I was familiar as to what to do. Funny thing did happen. A former co-worker was the x-ray tech. Can't hide out in the medical field! I hate to admit it, but that barium tasted soooo good coming off chicken broth for 7 dys. I was released shortly thereafter and went home. The door to Hades creeps open....I was thinking when I got home I would sleep. WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!! :omg: My upper body was being invaded by air pockets. There was no relief!!! I did not finally pass out until 5am that morning. I could not lay down at all. The more I walked, the worse it got. Tried propping up with pillows, nope! Talk about misery. The nurse at the surgery center told that there was nothing to take for that particular pain. I knew from being medical that the air in my belly would pass out the other end, but where would the air in my abdominal cavity go? It had to be absorbed. Let me tell you. It is day 7 and I am still in misery. I have been popping phazyme tablets like candy and it is not helping. The incisions are great. The port is a little sore. I am on Toradol because Vicodin makes me loopy. I can't lay on my left side due to the port position. That air is trapped all along my left neck and upper left arm. It feels like when someone gives you a massage and they hit that "knot" and squeeze it to death. It literally takes my breath away. Speaking of breathing...guess what happens when you breathe? Your lungs rise. Guess what happens when my lungs rise? It traps that air pocket!! :faint: I hope no one else has had to deal with this problem. My question is how much longer. At night during my rest, I can hear that air moving inside my belly. It is different from being inside the intestines like normal. Wakes me completely up and I end up walking which only makes it worse, but I have to do something. My question is if they can put this air IN so easily, why can't they suck it out like the dentist does when done? :cry Dr. C, if you are out there, answer that one. I did lose 10lbs on that 7-day pre-op diet and I am down another 5 since last friday so of course I am pleased :nervous . I can't wait to get to mushies though. Just wanted to share my experience and hope that someone can give me some advice on how to get rid of this air in my body because I don't like it anymore....Thanks guys! :help:

    What exactly does fluoroscopy show?

Devana, I am an x-ray tech and have been in the field for 12 yrs. Let me try to clear it up for you. They use fluoroscopy (live x-ray) in order to locate the port which shows up under x-ray. The amount of exposure is minimal because the physician regulates the on and off button. There is a max of 5 minutes on most machines before a buzzer goes off reminding the physician of the exposure amount which is still in regulation. The normal exposure time is roughly 4-5 seconds each time he turns it "on". Your physician doesn't need a lot of time to locate the port. It will just show up within that first 4-5 seconds and then he made need to expose maybe 2-3 more times equaling less than approximately 30 seconds. You receive much more than that spending a day at the beach or swimming. The physician also wears a lead apron to protect himself from exposure. Think about how many fills he may do in a day and all the exposure he is subject to and then think about in contrast to how much you are getting in that one visit. That is why the patient does not get a lead apron. Also, the apron would be in the area of interest (abdomen) during the x-ray. Having that apron there would prohibit the location of the port. Don't worry about the amount of exposure. It is all regulated by national and state standards. Hope this helps...

    pre op diet help!!!DRINKING..gulp gulp!

Kim- I am on 7 days of liquid pre-op. My menu choices include tea, coffee, gatorade, broths, Jello, skim milk, crystal light, Protein shakes (limit 2/dy), and Water. That is just my LBS's preference. I have already lost 5lbs since last thursday, which is more than the 3lbs over the last 6 wks from the weight loss challenge we have going on my job! Crazy! I have had high blood pressure for the last 6 yrs and with my weight steadily rising it was time to do something about it. Can't wait to get to cream soups! By the way, I am an x-ray tech...therefore the homer avatar!

    pre op diet help!!!DRINKING..gulp gulp!

I hear ya kimmason! I am on day 4 and I am so hungry! I wish someone would answer this mind-blowing question....How can you feel full off liquids and still have hunger pangs? I am basically trying to sleep away my time before my surgery on friday! I am so proud of myself at this point though. Day 1 was the worst. It has occurred to me that I miss chewing. I wake up in the morning with sore jaws from grinding in my sleep. I know this is all mental, but talk about a reality check. I must admit it has not gotten worse, but I was just wondering if anyone had experienced it.....Feedback?

Aug 4, 2006 begins the journey of a lifetime...:clap2: (Thanks Diva for the "wee suggestion"...:nervous )

    Aug. 4 band dates unite!

Thanks Diva! I have posted on the general discussion....Surgery is at 11:45am cst (10:45am your time). Will be keeping you and kutia in my prayers...
  18. I love the Adkin's drinks myself. They have recently improved the taste and it is really good. You can choose between strawberry, vanilla and 2 chocolate flavors. They normally run about $5.00 for 4 cans at any Walmart. I have been drinking them for breakfast for a long time now. I have not tried unjury, but a lot of people on here swear by it. Hope this helps. My 7 days of liquid begin on Friday! Pray for me...
  19. Hey all, Diva, I am also being banded on the 4th of Aug. I have the same feelings as you. It is obviously normal. I am trying to look at it in a positive way. I am a single mother of a 1 yr old. I want to be able to run and play with him and not have to worry about the impending consequences my over-eating will have on him if I don't get my weight issue under control. I also have high blood pressure at 35 which is really bad. Try to think of it as something you are doing for the people that love you the most. Get rid of the guilt for it will only make things worse! Everyone has choices in life and all of the people on this site have made the right one in doing something about their unhealthy lifestyle. I thank God that I am able to really do something about it even though I will be in debt because of it. Let's stay in touch during the liquid week prior....NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT 7 DAYS AT ALL!

    August Band Crew!!!!!

Hi all, As a medical professional for the last 12 yrs, I strongly recommend drawing up a living will / medical power of attorney whether you are contemplating surgery or not. There are too many times where unfortunate accidents happen and the injured party cannot make medical decisions for themselves. Unless you have these documents in place, the physician is the only one who can make these decisions even though a family member is present. If you truly want peace of mind, take care of it now. For those with elderly parents, this is really important. I am 35 and have one for myself and have encouraged my parents to do the same. You don't want to be faced with this legal issue in the middle of the immediate crisis. Just wanted to share....

Just banded, and want to share my exp.

Gochevy3, I am new to the site and will have my consultation appt today. I noticed you live about 45 minutes from me here in Dallas. I go through Decatur all the time on my way to Wichita Falls, where I am originally from. Glad to hear you are doing well after a few days. I really want this surgery for various reasons (obesity and high blood pressure at 35) and have been reading on this site for about a month now and it has been a blessing to get the reality dose I needed regarding the band. Who was your doctor if I may ask? I am seeing Dr. Jayaseelan today. Hope you have continued success!
