    Im a bandster!!!

Yeah, congrats and welcome to bandland
  2. Oye! There are people with very definite opinions, and let them. Who the hell cares. I'm getting so fed up with the constant debate of which wls is better. You know which one is best, the one that works. ALL of these procedures have failure rates- period. Noncompliance yields status quo. Surgical and apparatus complications can and will occur- why argue over which ones are worse or more predictable. None of it is predictable! WE make choices as to which wls option seems most suitable to us based on mutliple factors ranging from what we feel we can comply with (diet wise) to the inherit nature of the surgery itself. What you choose is great, what I choose is better. PERIOD

    Nerves at first visit

One down, good going. Don't fret over the process. It's definitely annoying, but don't let it be anxiety provoking. You'll get there, one step at a time

    Hair loss

It's not Vitamins, it's Protein. However, it's natural for the body to shed hair during stress and surgery is certainly stressful to the body. Need to keep protein to a min of 60g/day, more is better. Others take Biotin as well. It doesnt prevent hair loss but has building Proteins to support your new hair to come in stronger/thicker (good additive since the decreased protein levels would most likely result in thin brittle hair). Sorry hon, this is a common problem with a not so good solution lol

    10th Fill

She put 0.3cc of fluid into your band. As you get closer to green fills become smaller and smaller. It's not unusual for old bandsters to get 0.1cc tweaks for instance.

Thyroid and the lack of weightloss

I have borderline hypothyroid. No longer on synthroid. No problems.

    Scared!

No I disagree. I was pregnant with the band. I kept my Fluid but made the OBGYN aware. Every assessment was focused on appropriate mom and baby growth. Unfill was just if either of us was not adequately gaining -or- if there were adverse symptoms like frequent vomitting, lack of appetite. I had no such issues, gained 20 lbs (appropriate for an obese woman) and my baby thrived. You have to be very honest with yourself as your and baby's health is #1. So if at anytime doc is concerned, or if you have any issues, a fill is warranted regardless of concerns for regaining weight. At your weight 20 lb gain should be your target not the standard 35+. Moderate your portions, healthy food choices only

    Stalled at 40lbs lost

2much, but the fact that you need 1000mg of calcium daily is easily acquired through milk and/or milk products like yogurt which yields 3-4x the amount of calcium found in other ca foods like spinach, kale, even fish. So certainly take supplements (approx 650mg each) but be mindful of getting adequate calcium too

Weapon. Sound like a true plateau. And yes, they can last for months. To go off of Lisa's comment. Tricking the body is precisely what you want to do. You've been so clean for so long that the body has acclimated, metabolism has shifted etc. This is a an old bodybuilder trick. They eat clean for 6 days than eat like crap the 7th. As soon as the body starts detecting starvation, bam, it has a huge rise in cals and it calls off the plateau (or hoarding of fat reserves). Since you are well into your plateau. Forget one meal, or one day. Try a week. Truly, kick the diet for a week. Let your body 'think' it's flush w/ cals. After a week, go back on diet. Typically any weight gained flies off but you will see the scale start to go down. At that point my recommendation is to have a cheat meal or cheat day weekly to keep plateaus in check. Hope this helps. (and yes cal cycling is effective), however, your 900-1100 cal range is what Im at and Im a woman. Most banded men are a few hundred higher like 1100-1300 and that may be playing a factor. However, you won't hear from me not to weigh or track daily..that's a must in my book <wink>

    Disappointed!!! :-...(

NaNa what is your source for 'high complication rates' pertaining to the actual surgical procedure. My understanding was that the complications were few for the surgery in of itself. Most complications would arise after surgery and require reassessment or readmittance to the hospital for further diagnostics. Not acute complications requiring immediate intervention whilst in surgery. I would like to read the stats on the lapband surgical rates, but I have been unsuccessful in finding them thus far.

To fill or not to fill....

If you are satiated for 4 hrs, losing consistently, able to eat without complication...hold off. When anyone of those factors change, than get a fill. I'm a huge fan of taking it slow. When you think about having the band for life and the stoma and restriction changing with time..it's always a good idea to take care and not be aggressive with anything we do (fills, eating habits etc).

    Problem-Need Advice ASAP

I call bullshit. Call your surgeon and say, no let's not wait a month. You are absolutely right, if she's lost 70 lbs in a mere 3 months and is only sustaining herself through liquids than she is setting herself up for some severe complications. 70 lbs is a sufficient test for the band to losen, it didn't. Is she able to get at least Protein shakes down? This is precisely the kind of crap you don't gamble with. Next thing you know she'll be so dehyrated and depleted you'll see her in cardiac arrest or kidney failure. Sounds like doc got it wrong and it's time for him to repair the damage done!

    Stomach bug

Ale, Doc is going to tell you to do one of two things 1) get at least partial unfill until inflammation subsides 2) continue on liquids for as long as up to a week to get the inflammation down The problem is, with a swollen stoma, even drinking fluids further irritates it and either prolongs or exasperates the swelling. It is imperative that if you come down with a bug that causes vomitting that you get an unfill until it passes. This allows the inevitable (vomitting) without the problems (inflammation). And it takes far less time to get back up to where you were than going the long route of getting unfilled or drinking fluids while inflammed and play the waiting game. Continue with fluids until you hear back from your doc. Let us know what they said
  19. 4 lbs down last week...now let's keep this going

    Cold medicine

I think it's safe to assume you are off your pain meds from post surgery. That would be the only concern as you do not want to overdose on acetaminophen etc. You should be able to take an over the counter med, however, take liquids only. Many of them contain anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) that can lead to erosion if it sits in the upper pouch (like a pill would) that is long releasing or taken for a period of time. It's just a precaution.

    No progress

I would never 'divorce' my scale, it keeps me accountable <wink> Anyway, I just wanted to share that there are 2 components to weight loss: exercise and diet. Sounds like you have exercise under control, but I have no clue if you have the diet portion right. Some people misunderstand that eating less AND workout out more will result in wl.... Well that just depends on how little and how much. If you are getting inadequate cals to support your workout you will not lose weight, rather you will keep your body in perpetual 'starvation' mode. How many cals do you take in? What does an avg day of food look like for you? I'd like to say be patient, but 4 months and 2 lbs just isn't right is it. So let's investigate and little more..tell us about the diet

SICK less than 48 before surgery! !

Always consult w/ the surgeon first. Nothing worse than showing up and them declining you. Perhaps he can recommend some meds to help you along. You do not want to go into surgery with a compromised immune system and only your doc will determine if you are in good enough health for surgery
