September 2009 Band Date
hmarko replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone's diet is different on the protein liquids but watch the fat on the creamy soups. I am not allowed anything but protein shakes and 2 cups of veggies. fat should not be over 35 grams. I have been told to only drink skim milk for milk in my protein shake. -
September 2009 Band Date
hmarko replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you guys on codeine? IF so it constipates you. -
Drink a ton of Water it MUST be over 8 cups I have like a gallon a day no exxageration on some days (just always have a big water bottle at my desk). Limit caffeine to two cups so you don't dehydrate. Your not eating any carbs I assume? It can be that too - my headache started around day 3 to 4, for two days, then went away now I am on day 7. I think because your body doesn't have anything to burn and its supposed to burn the fat.

Any ideas for the September Bandsters nickname?
hmarko replied to amethyst_moonbow's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Its not so bad I agree, but i am trying to figure out why 'bandster hell' is worse because a) you are in pain and must have SOME constriction compared to now  you can eat a bit more (unless those in bandster hell didn't have to do 2 weeks of Protein shakes). I like unjury all flavors. Then I grill some onions and mushrooms and peppers (and sometimes eggplants) and throw it in broth. But I am finding that I am sensitive to food smells now. -
NYU bandsters - some questions re op day
hmarko posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello - I am getting banded on sep 11 at NYU by Dr Ren Fielding. I have all the information packs on what to expect but I am interested in real experience on some of the logistics. I am going home the same day later in the day. So the questions: 1) I am taking a cab to hospital they say not to bring cell phones etc; how do you get in touch with your people if they aren't there until later (mine live far away so will come to bring me home - plus i doubt i will want company?). 2) is there a locker where you can keep your things? 3) do i really need anyone to bring me or be there? I am ok on the moral support end. Other than that is there a reason for someone to be there? They say to give your things to the person who is with you that sounds silly to me. Usually there is aplace for your things. 4) Any info appreciated on what the day went like at NYU and what will make it easier for me. -
Liquid Diet...The Ultimate Test!
hmarko replied to Mia26's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am doing ok with it.. I was careful to not get into 'carb mode' before it started because then I am a bottomless pit. I also am drinking the unjury shakes some of the recommended shakes had not so great carbs in them which would make me hungry so check the carb content and ingredients of what you are taking. I am allowed two cups of veggies - I haven't cheated. I have STOPPED myself for habitually reaching out for a choc covered pretzel at work today but that was habit. broth helps take the edge off. -

Does diet coke fatten your liver?
hmarko replied to ellcnl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't rule it out so quickly. I have PCOS and diabetes and extremely insulin resistant so get insulin spikes over nothing. I have noticed that when I drink diet cokes I am hungrier and I don't know if these are studies or theories that your body reacts to sugar free drinks as if it were sugar, thus releasing more insulin which is what I think is the cause of fatty liver. But I'm not a doctor just someone who reads a lot  I am due for surgery on sep 11 and VERY paranoid about the whole fatty liver thing - i know i have one as I had a problem over a year ago and they ultrasounded it (but my doc told me that is what it would show due to my PCO and diabetes).. and that was 20 lbs ago so I am sooo worried about the surgeon going in there and having to do the more complex surgery (open u up) to get around my large liver. Cross ur fingers for me! BTW I few diet cokes should not matter I would think these things take years to happen?? And I think my doc said you can drink snapple preop so they aren't concerned. I just avoid it myself. -
Altitude now that is interesting - if that is it - while it isn't the same ask if anyone has skiied high altitude.
-
restless monkey - yes i have that problem - lose then gain plus another 20. I am now 240 or 235 - i had been bouncing up and down from 222 to 196 for the last 6 years. If i can eat 1000 cals a day i can lose weight. that is why I am ok w/ trying lapband. I don't want to do something drastic until lapband is proven to not work. My docs had said that lapband had cured a lot of diabetics. So I'm hopeful. And the other thing is that the rebound weight gains won't happen (the rebound weightgains are due to volume eating when i get carb 'reactions' low blood sugar and becoming a bottomless pit) - this cannot occur w/ lap band. I do tend to do a lot of research - but in the case of bypass i am not right now at the point of believing that is my best option - in 2 years maybe i would change my mind but i have to try the tamer option first. one is reversible the other isn't. one requires a lot more time off the other doesn't.. so at this point i know enough to not pursue it. Don't mean to be defensive. It just took me years to get to accepting the lap band. I think I will lose on it. I just may not lose more than 30 lbs in 1 year (40 if i am lucky) but that is fine. The following year I can lose another 30.
-
No did not research bypass - i stopped at the point which talked about resecting intestines and malapsorption... that is too drastic for me - plus there seem to be many effects I would rather not deal with. If lap band doesn't work i would consider it.... but lap band will work just slower than others. I am severely insulin resistant w/ PCOS. THe heavier you are the more your body works to keep fat. Its a vicious circle. If i lose weight and not rebound (and the lap band will help that cuz i rebound when i slip and eat too many carbs... then i end up eating out of control).. I'm good. To me losing something is better than nothing or continuously gaining. Two doctors told me to do lap band they would not advise on bypass as the first thing in my case. I didn't really get into it w/ my surgeon because she doesn't know my history as well as my endocrine doctor and GP. I didn't say I don't lose on 1300 cals a day - i just don't lose a lot or quickly. If I end up losing more - then great. Maybe i lost my sense of calorie counting - thats always possible too as the other poster mentioned people's perception's are off. The lap band will keep me honest. My issue is not really behavioral but physical - I don't plan on eating icecream to cheat the band. I just need the ability to keep to really tiny portions and very low cal diet indefinitely. I can prob be disciplined enough on my own for a few months till full restriction.
-
This is my view on this (not banded yet). I have a slow metabolism so I worry about not losing weight. If you can't lose weight on 900 cals a day then you absolutely SHOULD be banded because there is no way someone can really sustain that sort of caloric intake forever without the help of a band so to me you are STILL better off. That's what I tell myself .. cuz it can take me a year to lose 20 lbs on maybe 1300 cals a day BUT I can gain it in a flash (like 2 months) if I slip so even if I only lose 20-30 lbs in a year - I WON'T be slipping up to the tune of 25 lbs weight gains anymore.. so i'm still better off.

What did you do to survive Clear Liquid pre-op diet?
hmarko replied to incolorado's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think many shakes are high in sugar and i think optifast is one of them. My dietician gave me a choice and i said I wouldn't be able to stay on half of them cuz the sugar would set me off. I asked if it was ok i do atkins or eas anything low carb and they said fine. She told me those who do not do the low ccarb shakes and i mean low as in 5 grams of carbs nothing like 20 grams... those people have a tough time sticking to it. With lo carb you stick it out for the 3 days then ur fine after that you don't care. -
I ride dressage and I totally feel the same way - i will not show cuz in dressage you need to show in white pants! noway! Plus I am sure those who don't know me are prejudice but any of my recent trainers in the last 4 years know I am very capable. I was trying to get help w/ my horse (financially last year) but we couldn't even find too many people who would be capable enough riders. Now i am thinking of getting a new one and I am all hung up about going to these strangers at this huge weight and them judging me. My friend said to me very honestly 'don't take this the wrong way but considering you have some physical limitations that doesn't get in your way and your a very competent rider'. But again those are the people who know me and see me ride regularly. I think I'll have to lose at least 50 lbs before i go and check out horses. To avoid the judgement. Anyway I feel it gets in the way of my WHOLE life not just riding. I am so done w/ this

hmarko replied to incolorado's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Seriously - No nutrients at all for 3 days? No Protein shakes nothing? thats drastic. I have to do 2 weeks but Protein Shakes. And I can do veggies if i get hungry 2 cups I day. I would not be allowed to do ramen noodles too many carbs. The point is to shrink the liver. I am sooo afraid of not defatting my liver (I have fatty liver to begin with so i'm not optimistic) and I read they do laparatomy??? if liver too big (ie big cut down the chest bone to belly button). -
Thank's Shena! That's ok I can wait a few weeks to ride.... my present to myself when I lose weight may be a new horse (my current one can benefit from just hanging out at this point). I retired her when I had the young guy going then he died; so poor mare got unretired - but I only ride her 2 times a week and she is on and off. One problem or another... thanks for the encouragement - I really can't wait!!!

LNBRDOC - OUCH that sounds painful... my horse did that too she actually went completely down and i sort of rolled off before she did (she took good care not to crush me). Before that I hadn't fallen in 5 years! I sit the trot for fun LOL (dressage!) - I haven't ridden in two weeks and both my horse and I were out of shape! But good point on the posting. I'm here because I lost my baby horse (well he was going to turn 4 but I delivered him and raised him and gained yet ANOTHER 20 lbs in 2 months) and that was that I just couldn't take it anymore. I can work so hard to lose 15 lbs and gain it in a flash!
-
Why do they make u take this test? Is it dangerous if you have sleep apnea? My doc's practice isn't making me take it - and it sounds like everyone thinks they don't have it but they do?? ?Confused. Or is it just an insurance thing?
-
Get up from the ground??? Haven't done THAT since I was 20  I normally do a lot of sitting trot w/ 'movements' (dressage). If I miss just one ride i get sore abs (so tomorrow should be fun since i haven't ridden in two weeks) - horse went lame. I can see walking being ok if you are on something sane (my horse is sane).
-
Thanks Lbndoc. Ok the port thing is kind of creeping me out... how do we know it doesn't get loose from the tugging? I doubt my doc will clear me to ride cuz they are saying no exercise that even remotely involves abs until 6 weeks - i mean i may get on and walk. Good luck to you too! I'll see how i am feeling i guess. I don't have that prob w/ my boob and that is weird cuz its not like they are small  wonder if like some sort of bandage there would make it less uncomfortable. My fear of riding with a band was a fall and having things slip. She said worse case is the port connectors may come apart same thing w/ accidents or any trauma. Not to jinx myself but I don't usually fall

Hi congrats on your banding! I have a date for sep 11. I have a question for you. Did you stay overnight? (they are telling me i can go home that night).. and this is my real question - did you need care at all? I am thinking of going home w/ a taxi (I live in NYC) am I crazy? and I live alone. Can you let me know what I am in store for and if i REALLY need to plan on someone getting me home and helping me.

September 2009 Band Date
hmarko replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Ashleysara - nice to meet you! Funny thing on the bagel - i NEVER eat them they really set me off on to too much eating. Far as the weight gain - i can gain it in two months and take a whole year to lose it... but i just gained weight into new territory and its like it changed my metabolism. My surgeons office was doing a study on this omentectomy helping diabetics lose weight faster but they froze the study. I am half thinking of calling them back to find out if they can do it anyway. It something about removing the free fat attached to organs. -
September 2009 Band Date
hmarko replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all - my date is Sep 11. Before I got approved I started liquid dieting because my decision stemmed from a 25 lb weight gain in just two months! W/ my insurance time - i have NOT been able to lose though I tried. Then i was going to go on liquid for a while but now that i have a date I'm kind of eating things I never ate before!!! Like bagels (had two this week).. because I will never have them again. I don't eat them for a reason! I am trying to exercise more than the two times a week that I ride my horse (but I have only gotten as far as restarting my gym membership, finding my card, and heart rate monitor). My excuse is working late but thats a bit of an excuse because i didn't work late today! I am single and only have a brother and his family (aside from some friends) and I hate imposing on people so I have a question. I am told I am not staying at hospital overnight. Does anyone know how much you really need to have someone with you? I live in NYC so everything is easy - can have a cab take me home... etc. -
Hi fellow horseback riders! I have a horse and ride too - I am due to be banded on sept 11. They say no exercise past a walk (ie human) for 6 weeks and especially nothing w/ abs. I do dressage so its all core. Now you feel your port moving around?? whats with that? And why?
