calories during mushy stage? Frustrated!!
hmarko replied to abercchic's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i asked this exact question to my nutritionist. First you can't possibly get enough protein on 1/2 cup of food. She told me to try and aim for 80-90 grams. She said the focus is healing and the important part is to eat the pureed food and I can eat 1 cup if after i eat the 1/2 cup I am still hungry. I love love love lemon sole pan fried w/ a pat of butter and a whole lemon - this yoou can eat just mash it up. noodleless lasagna - low fat ricotta, mozzarella and Pasta sauce (its a bit high calorie though another poster told me i can find lower calorie ricotta) tuna but not loving that Soups - lentil, potato leek (blend the lemon sole in the late) egg salad or scrambled eggs greek 0% yogurt I am going to make chili (burger beans and spices then blend it) refried beans w/ melted cheese -
Banded 9/21/09 and I am home!

JenFenRen - you sound like you have the same thing that happened to me. They use a certain anesthetic to intubate you and relax your muscle and for many that results in the feeling that you had a bootcamp workout. It was worse than the surgery pain - its bad enough you have no core strength but my neck muscles hurt , delts, legs everything. It will go away in two days. and yes keep walking. the worst thing you can do for muscle soreness is nothing you will get stiffer and stiffer. -
When did you go on solids? Did that feel any more filling? or any different? I am hoping so but probably not since we need to chew to the pureed point anyway. I am at about the same calories. I'm going to average it out for the week once I've logged it for a week. but its about 80 or more grams of protein, 35 grams of fat is what I aim for (unless I had too much of the ricotta thing); anywhere from 30-50 grams of carbs the less the better for me... but i have not had any greens and i'm feeling like i miss that.

Hmm I have to find it... i got part skim ricotta and its 170 cals a half cup. i do love melted mozz though. I need more practice with no drinking too getting better i end up catching myself thinking about it. What are you guys doing for exercise - i just walk home from work 1.5 miles. I used to ride my horse but i can't yet and now she is out of commission for longer than me. I am starving too but you MUST not skip your stages your stomach has to heal. I was the LEAST hungry on the protein shakes if you can believe that. Unjury protein only no other junk like sugars. which can make you hungry - read your label. Now that i have carbs in my life I am getting hungry again. no matter how little. So i know you didn't get much guidance so maybe everyone can tell you what they were told. I was on thin liquids for 10 day (that means they CAN be sipped thru a straw but should NOT be due to the gas). Then I went to pureed food for 10 days (where I am now). Flakey fish can be forked mash (tilapia, sole). I am also allowed scrambled eggs on this stage, fat free refried beans w/ melted cheese; thick soups. I did not need to take vicodin past 3 days. I did have the single incision done so maybe that is less pain. You should be going for your post op soon so you can check in with them. You don't have any fever do you? Check that and your incisions to make sure they aren't feeling or looking worse (what you can see if them). -
yea me too I was just asking the nutritionist this. I said there is NO way I can eat only a half a cup and even at a cup i'm eating every 3-4 hours. She said the main aim is to stay w/ puree in order for the stomach to heal. Can go to 1 cup (of course now I prob need to write and say I am at past a cup). Seriously maybe I am not eating enough during the day and I skip Breakfast but when i was walking home it felt like i was getting the low blood sugar shakes. I added the metformin back in (when i test blood sugar it is normal though).

My first fill is 10/14. I can't wait because I have no trouble going past a cup. I get 800 to 1000 calories in. Mostly protein. I haven't been doing veggies at all.

I got diarrhea on the liquid - mine was protein only Unjury. I don't know if the others will do this. Its the lack of fiber I think. Fortunately mine would occur at night between 9 and 11 pm and that would be it. -

Ok so here is another difference - I have to stop drinking 5 mins before a meal and have to wait only 20 mins! YAY to drink. So one thing I never thought about - no more wine with dinner when dining out? Bummer. I too slipped up on the drinking but I caught myself- i keep a water bottle at my desk. -

My favorite is this - Lemon sole. Juice of one lemon; 1/2 tbsp of butter - cook in a pan. Mash it up. Another one but this is high calorie and believe it or not my doc's office suggest it (or maybe it is high cal compared to what I have been used to eating). Noodleless lasagna - skim ricotta; skim mozzarella and marinara sauce microwaved or baked. I try to keep that at the minimum though. Good ole tuna w/ light mayo Greek 0% yogurt with blended fruit or i do use a bit of honey. -

Everyone has diff guidelines many here are allowed the creamy soups - one thing everyone has consistently been told is no solid food after the surgery for 3 weeks or more. (For me it is 3 weeks)... Did I send you the link to sep 09 support area? -

Here is the link to the Sept 09 Support group September 09 Bandsters - LAP-BAND [quote=Loveslady;1331215......... someone was telling me that if youve had a kid its a little easier. Well I don't have any kids. First surgery here. All new experience for me and my doc didn't tell me any breathing exercises to do. What are they? confliciting info: Can you eat creamy soups right now? I've had those campbells drinkable soups so I didn't think there was a problem. I went to work on Wed after my surgery Friday so on the 5th day. I had the single incision. I have a desk job - i was fine except for the gas pains, and also when I got up from sitting it hurt but not bad. Now I am 90 pct ok. Not sure on the creamy soups I wasn't allowed any of that until 10 days later - only protein shakes that are think enough to go thru a straw. UGH i am hungry now at about 10 days post op. -
Hi Jenn - my banding went really well - I got the single incision. I had pain but tolerable. A LOT of gas and I walked 1.5-2 miles daily. and lived on gasx. I lost a lot on the Protein liquid diet now I am on mushies and gained a bit back and now I am hungry. Soon as I started w/ food it calmed the gas and now I am a bit hungrier each day it seems. My biggest complaint is that i am usually working out (via horseback riding) and now that I can't my back is starting to hurt between them going thru my abs for this surgery and no exercise  Get my first fill in Oct 14. When are you getting banded? or are you banded?

I know I have the Lap Band but don't know what size (I think it comes in two sizes now). I think everyone has differing degrees of swelling. When I was doing protein i was having more gas problems which also kept me more full! I can drink pretty fast. When yuo do the barium swallow they make you drink that thick stuff as fast as possible and I was wondering if I would be gagging. I was surprised it actually went down. -
yes thats it

Hi I am Helen. I was going to try the NYU support group. In October I guess. Where do you work? I am midtown on 6th ave. Have you tried the NYU support group at all? I am feeling well - I lost a lot on the liquid diet but now I think I actually put a couple of pounds back on. I expected that. If anything the weight loss on the liquids keeps you so motivated. -

The gas would worry me too. I was SOOO gassy on the protein shakes - soon as I went to mushy all better. You are a few days behind me. The tomato soup is probably not enough. The tuna is it 1 cup? Or are you doing 1/2. I think I am eating about the same except I wouldn't do tomato soup as that is no calories. I seem to be about 800 cals; 60-80 grams of protein, 15-30 grams of carbs, and about 35 grams of fat. I am not starving but could eat more. I haven't eaten once to feeling 'full' but I wasn't hungry either after eating. My doc told me she did a bit of a fill but when i did the post op i met w/ the nurse so he said no - its really nothing they just prime the tubes. But regardless there IS quite a tightening fill or no fill. Compared to before I mean. I got hungrier earlier and I went back to the hot broth. I think the gas kept me less hungry before LOL -

I haven't had the refried beans do you know why they said no? I had scrambled eggs w/ cheese; flounder sauteed in lemon and a teaspoon of butter, yogurt (greek). On Tuesday when you go to mushy you still can't have refried beans? I am trying the ricotta recipe tomorrow. -
PS somewhere on this board someone mentioned sparkpeople is great for tracking I have been using it - its great!

I am just starting mushies. How much are you all eating? My instructions say 1/2 cup to 1 cup strive for 2-3 meals a day. I am able to do a cup w/o a problem but I am trying to slow down my eating (ie maybe i would be full w/ less). Today I had the following B:2 scrambled eggs 1 oz cheese (my highest fat entree) lunch - 1 cup of fork flaked sole made w/ a pat of butter and lemon dinner - the rest of that sole 1/2 w/ 1/2 cup potato leek Soup blended (that was good!)

My doctor says to call them if we are not losing weight - to get fills.

Funny I was just going to post a thread on this! I haven't made high calorie choices and have gained around 2-3 lbs overnight from going from liquids to mushies. I was banded on 9/11 and since aug 28th when I was on (Protein only) liquids I lost 21 lbs which I figured was more than I should have even if I am eating 300-600 cals a day. A few observations - my first mushy was yogurt (greek thick no fat) and right away the gas settled down (which means that more comfort means more room for hunger). But I am feeling much more normal now thank goodness. I did have 2 scrambled eggs this morning with an oz of cheese done on the griddle - ie very little fat - about a teaspoon. Once you do get food into the mix its harder to not think about food. The liquid keeps you focused food starts being distracted but hey we need to learn to live with that aspect. I am going to have flaked lemon sole later.

Hi everyone - can we start using the sep 09 section for threads? this one has multiple topics hard to follow. It would be great if we all move over that way at least when everyone else is banded in Sep. I'm going to post there right now re mushy stage  -

I am allowed melted cheese on mushies. Two recipes they recommend.... ricotta cheese, Pasta sauce, and melted mozzarella and refried Beans (fat free) with melted cheddar -
I am type 2 w/ PCOS. I usually have bg up to 140's in the AM but It goes down during the day due to overproduction of insulin when I eat and I am not eating 'bad' foods. If I eat inappropriate foods its up to 180 - 200. I will stay on the metformin once i start eating (which I have today). I should have taken my bg in the AM while on liquid that would have been smart  So i had a baseline before starting the food. Today was my first day of mushies. Metformin comes in liquid so will be starting that tomorrow. I've gained a lot of weight any time I quit metformin and i never lost it again after restarting so i don't want to mess with that.

I just had surgery w/ Dr Ren - she is great. Right now that whole practice are my hero's especially her  My surgery was 9/11 - Oh if they ask you to do the trial drug for anesthesia to prevent nausea DO IT! I had NO nausea at all whatsoever! I think it made a big difference. They will ask you the day of the surgery. There is a whole team assigned to you its very cool. Dr Ren did the single incision on me - i have no scars really the biggest one is in my belly button. Dr Fielding has a video of it on you tube its cool. Lets stay in touch. Pls feel to PM me if you have any questions - and good luck!
