hmarko replied to hmarko's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Is anyone paranoid about moving the port with excercize?
hmarko replied to IwannaBeHappy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
HI I was banded by Dr Ren too. I replied above that I don't have issues... but also as an FYI I went to the last support group and they had this guy who weight trains a bunch of the NYU'ers and he hits them hard w/ weight work outs to muscle fatigue (but only 5 exercises and 20 mins) so its very intense but short. Then again he did mention that you don't actually need to do ab work. I do serious core work with riding dressage. Haven't had a problem. Let me know what she says. -
On the go food for travel?
hmarko replied to juliansmom2003's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some people complain of being tight on the plane my doc advises not to eat on the plane cuz the food is rubbery but I didn't have that issue as biz class the food is better (I too just did a biz trip). On the plane I ordered salmon and it was doused in gravy and it was fine - stay away from the bread you are too new out of ur surgery to chance that. Bring Protein shakes with you. I put them in small baggies and brought a shaking cup. I also brought Mcann's sugar free oatmeal in packets. Both those came in very handy!! Dining out go w/ the fish options. I had an amazing Chilean Sea bass that was out of this world. I picked at fries (3). Also another of the doc's at NYU says to have a glass of wine before eating (usual rules apply on liquids)... it relaxes the esophagus... I exercised this option both on the plane and when dining out. I can't remember what I had on the second night... oh it was prosciutto and cheese appetizer thats it (on my own at the hotel). -
yea i wondered about whether the unjury chocolate would be the same i frankly find it the same as hot chocolate (then again don't ask me the last time i actually had last choc so who knows).

Oh don't worry :w00t: I forgot about it! Met w/ surgeon she said what you said - its from eating too fast and the more restriction i get the more i need to pay attention to that. She agreed one day you could be starving the next day you can't put anything in your mouth and the tight days tend to follow the ravenous days (i noticed this too). She gave me a baby fill .5cc's... can't say how I'm handling it yet as I've not been on solids. Today i felt tight but I think it may have to do w/ sore muscles???? My core muscles? The Water went down very easy at my appt much diff than last time... but I figured since i'm having the pb issues i better figure THIS restriction out first before moving on. scale is moving slow but i think i'm putting some muscle back.. I can feel some of those leg muscles again where before they went to squishy down to my knee even hurting! I really should measure (I did get into my skinny riding pants that I bought too small).

I'm down 1-3 lbs depending on the day :w00t: today it is 2 lbs

Is anyone paranoid about moving the port with excercize?
hmarko replied to IwannaBeHappy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I horseback ride and asked about the port (especially if I fall which not to jinx myself I don't do too often)... the training I do is very much core (abs and back).. I never feel the port even though I will get ab soreness like i've had a big ab workout... but the funny thing is when walking I do feel a little funny 'thing' sometimes. My port is 1 inch to the right of my belly button and the 'thing/pain' i get is a further 3 inches past that. I usually walk 2 miles a day and if I pick up the pace I tend to get this. -
Kiz how does peanut butter mix in with yogurt isn't it too thick - and not break down? this sounds yummy.

September 2009 Band Date
hmarko replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They tell me if it slipped its very painful. I too find it odd that yo are at half restriction and you don't feel anything. Do you feel anything if you drink really cold water? Can you drink that fast? Maybe they put .4cc??? I went to a bit over half 5.5 and I couldn't even swallow water - they dropped me to 4.7cc. Gen I just got a second fill today but i asked for a 'baby' fill cuz i have had 5 pb episodes in between eating like crazy very volatile. If i find i'm eating too much i'll go back for more. i'm at 5.2 now. I didn't feel it this time not even when drinking the water. Very slightly - anyway I'm on liquids now. PS when you do liquids do you do thick liquids like soup? -
Banded 9/23 had 2nd fill and have a restriction ?
hmarko replied to pookiemp's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pookiekemp that seems to happen one day I eat alot then I can't eat anything - i think it has to do w/ stress levels, pms etc. who knows what else maybe full moons -
September 2009 Band Date
hmarko replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yea things are good. I've realized I lost a lot of muscle so trying to get it back. and i'm trying to figure out how to eat now that i have restriction - i've had about 5 pbs non longer than 20 mins or anything but it seems behavioral from talking to various people. -
Hi Vanessa! Will check out the blog.. I am pretty sure this has to do w/ eating too fast. I'm also all over the place some days not feeling much restriction so i can eat fast w/o repercussions and then if i try the same thing the next day no good. Do you drink Water when you are there? how does that work out? Does it go down in 5 mins ? 15 mins etc? When I was there i was too tight i couldn't drink it at all in 45 mins (little dixie cup) so they took .8 cc's out.. then i could drink it in about 15 mins. Now I can drink pretty fast. Good question on what do I mean a lot - let me go look at my food journal and I won't count the halloween candy as it is a slder food (I did slip up a day or two). OK the days I call a lot amount to about 1500 calories and it may not be so much about the calories but how I feel when I am eating ie its just going down ok and I am eating like 4 means a day of more than a cup. Today I'm very tight for some reason. Here is a good example of a starving day: The day before mind you I got a bit stuck...whatever that is worth: Unjry Protein at 10 am 1pm hummus - about 1/4 cup; 2 wedges toasted pita; 4 oz baked salmon (typically I can only eat the baked salmon) 5pm - was STARVING - so i had had a tuna pouch w/ some olive oil and lemon 7pm home 370 cals worth of crackers and cheese 8pm - grilled chicken (about 6 oz) peppers and onions THEN I was STILL hungry later so at 10 or 11 I had the 0% greek yogurt and some flax seed meal. Total cals 1515 not including any working out. I won't even get into the next two days which involved PMS and candy (It must have to do w/ PMS) eating more... THEN NOW Friday 870 cals Sat 1433 (I drank a bit so that relaxes things and makes it go down - seriously they tell us this) Sun - 800 cals - I pb'ed filet mignon which i ate more of yesterday and it went down just fine today nope. I had some warm choc unjury and then i just tried to eat ground sirloin and it took me 45 mins. But at least it went down. We have to preschedule or else we aren't getting an appt for 3 weeks. I haven't figured out if I am tighter after a workout - today I worked out hard and yesterday too but after the workout I drank ( we had a little party :scared2:. I'm ok with this - I'm just trying to figure it all out. In my support group I think we established that I have the first bite syndrome thing where the esophagus gets tight or something - plus though I am eating 5000 times slower than before its prob still not slow enough nor small bites (they are like 1/2 teaspoon but just now i was at a 1/4 teaspoon since today seems to be a tight day). I've had probs w/ chicken too but as you see on that 'hungry' day 6 oz no problem. It wasn't dry though. I'm glad they tell us the fills I would want to know I don't obsess but I want to know how my body handles certain things. I'm going on Friday and I don't care whether i get a fill or not I just want to check in w/ my surgeon because I've been seeing the NP's and i haven't seen her since the surgery. I had to run over there Friday cuz i felt a small lump that i never felt before (not my port) - they checked it out - they think its fatty tissue (size of pea) - and then I was asking about traveling and what to expect in the air... so one of the NP's goes to me you want a fill today - i said no way - I'm not even dealing w/ this one 100 pct.... plus i'll be back here friday right after my trip. So I can always get a date to go there w/ an NP but to see the surgeons we need to plan. So I booked appts a month apart. I'm losing somewhere between 1-2 lb s a week. I'm up and down 2 lbs a lot so w/ that noise its hard to tell week to week.

stardustic do you know where you are at w/ the fill now? also the size of the band? I've got a 10cc lapband and was given 4.7 cc's and its been borderline tight - i've got an appt on friday actually w/ my surgeon which i am keeping whether she fills me or not. some days i'm eating a lot other days NOTHING its all over the place - weird. I have had about 4 pb's since this fill 2 weeks ago.
-
You can try a glass of wine pretty much now. I guess how you eat depends on whether you will have a fill or not. Basically I don't eat past feeling tight in my chest. Or hiccups. Not that I am an expert or anything I've only been banded since 9/11 and still figuring my way around this.

September 2009 Band Date
hmarko replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess how quickly you get to restriction depends on your doctor too - w/ the 10cc band they put me right up to 5.5 cc's (which was too much for me so I ended up at 4.7 so that would be like a 1cc fill for you percentage wise. It will be hard for people to compare everyone's experiences are relative. -
September 2009 Band Date
hmarko replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Amanda are you weight training at all - you may be gaining back muscle. Remember how I was saying I lost a crazy amount of weight that made no sense from the protein diet? It was like a lb a day and the math didn't work out - well that is because I lost muscle mass - my chiro confirmed it and told me I better hit the weights and not even weight for riding to build the muscles back. So maybe that is it. I read here that the 4cc is the older version of the Lapband don't know how true it is. -
I think you need to be a certain BMI to be able to do SIL at least my surgeon said to me 'now that you are smaller I can do SIL'. I love it and I really think there was less pain just from comparing notes to others.

I had my first "fill" today...yikes!
hmarko replied to RebeccaJ's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes 2 days of liquids then try mushies if that comes up 3rd day of liquids then 2 days of mushies. Do not keep trying to eat solids you will make it worse and worse. -
Forgive Me Lap Band Goddess
hmarko replied to cruzlady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I need forgiveness too I bought a freaking bag of candy for Halloween cuz I KNOW the kiddies in the building will be coming and I just cannot have this crap in my house. Cuz guess what - TOM plus candy = well you know the rest. BTW one oz of cream cheese isn't bad at all its 100 cals 10 grams of fat tops if that. I agree w / sistasassy...BUT the lap band does crap to restrict junk food like candy - UGH ok penance at the gym tomorrow! -
Why did I choke on chicken but can eat Snickers?
hmarko replied to Mickey527's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are eating slider foods - candy- and chips and not Protein. If you can't eat protein you are too tight - and then you end up eating the junk. The protein will fill you up more than the junk food would as it goes right through. How many cc's are you at? A sign of being too tight is eating too much slider foods because you can't eat protein - unless its all behavioral in which case the band won't help you solve that. -
Can COUGHING hurt the band?!
hmarko replied to Agnes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
glad someone posted this i have been coughing a little and today I coughed and I had diaphragm pain - not intense but it was like a stuck feeling. It went away and if i cough now it isn't happening but wonder if that is just the diaphragm or referred pain somehow. I'm seeing my doc next week figure if it gets bad I 'll just call but I am fine now -
Boy one minute I'm too tight and PB'ing on 3 bites of something and the next I am eating the house down. I don't get this!! I did hear it changes from day to day. I am PMS'ing. I guess that could be why I can eat anything? I managed to have chicken breast a whole 6 oz and veggies and not get stuck most times (actually all times) I have gotten stuck. I now own papaya enzymes! I have had 3 pb's since my fill oct 14 - not terrible -lasted about 15 mins. except that one incident at work was bad but again it was quick and over.

Inquiring Pre-Op Minds Want to Know if...
hmarko replied to Patterba's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found the liquid preop diet way easier than bandster hell.. its a mindset the preop you know you have no choices i did it with only protein so after 3 days you get in a 'zone' of not really being hungry plus the fast weight loss is motivating. I used unjury and drank a lot of liquids and broth as well. preop i was allowed 2 cups of veggies - post op nothing. -
Cooking Chicken for your band
hmarko replied to john47's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've made chicken breast on the griddle with onions and peppers (using only the regular coating on the griddle). I've had probs with chicken but I did not have problems with this one. The griddle i have is part of my stove but I think any one you buy and put on top of a flame would work. -
I had a little one today too when I ate cold chicken (another lesson learned). But tonight i ate filet mignon (i did do meat tenderizer and i didn't overcook it was red inside which i don't mind) and that was fine. I don't think its from being tight though. I have always gotten into trouble from eating fast. You may have some fill already from surgery
