I am 27 (was 25 when banded) and am trying to use this site more to help me. I am a slow loser, but I am going in the right direction and have been since surgery, slooowwly, but that is more than some people get so I am proud of it.
I was also diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome at the age of 6, and have struggled with that for most of my life. Being overweight made me withdraw even more (largely from many many medications) At 17 I lost a lot of weight through diet and exercise and by 19 I was very happy w/ what I saw in the mirror.
I had successful experimental brain surgery to treat the Tourettes at age 20 and going through a period of depression shortly thereafter, I gained all of the weight back plus 40 additional pounds. At 27, I have lost over 70 lbs (would like to lose another 70) I feel like I am just starting to find who I truly am and get hold of my life, albeit a bit later than most of my peers, but they did not have to endure what I have. I am not a quitter, I am very stubborn, and I believe that I touch most people that I meet in a very good way..
I have been in college for the last 9 years, have gotten an associates degree, will graduate with my bachelors degree in 2015. As of December I am seeking a part time position while I am in school to fill the large gap in my resume and try to save some money for an apartment of my own.
Normally I would be ashamed of how long it has taken, but with all I have been through I will be honored to hold a bachelors degree no matter how long it takes. I hope to help others here through my experiences and knowledge, and to continue gaining some long overdue self esteem along the way. Maybe, even cultivate a friendship or two! I do not regret being banded, but I do regret not utilizing this site to its full potential from the get go.
