Meals: How many meals do you consume per day?
Arcael replied to TexasRose's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My doctor said 3 meals, I go 3-6 small meals a day, it keeps my metabolism up -
A Lean Cuisine Grilled chicken Ceasar bowl, and dinner depends on how I feel after working out. Probably string cheese and lunch meat.

Am I really the only guy that posts here?

Taken from Wiki - Ketosis (IPA pronunciation: [ki'tosɪs]) is a stage in metabolism occurring when the liver has been depleted of stored glycogen and switches to a chronic fasting mode during long periods of starvation. During the chronic stage of starvation (after glycogen has run out), fat (triglycerol) is cleaved to give 3 fatty acid chains and 1 glycerol molecule in a process called lipolysis. Most of the body is able to utilize fatty acids as an alternative source of energy in a process where fatty acid chains are cleaved to form acetyl-CoA, which can then be fed into the Krebs Cycle. During this process a high concentration of glucagon is present in the serum and this inactivates glucose kinase switching the primary energy source of most cells from using glucose to fatty acids. At the same time, new glucose is synthesized in the liver from lactic acid, glucogenic amino acids, and glycerol, in a process called gluconeogenesis. This glucose is used exclusively by cells such as neurons and red blood cells. Ketone bodies, from the breakdown of fatty acids to acetyl groups, are also produced during this fasting state, and are burned throughout the body. During the initial stages of starvation the adult brain does not burn ketones, however the newborn brain makes immediate use of this important substrate for lipid synthesis in the brain. After about 48 hours of starvation, the adult brain starts burning ketones in order to more directly utilize the energy from the fat stores that are being depended upon, and to reserve the glucose only for its absolute needs, thus slowing the depletion of the body's Protein store in the muscles. The brain retains a residual need for glucose, because ketones can only provide energy when used during aerobic respiration in mitochondria. In the long thin neurons, much of the metabolically active cellular membrane must derive its energy from glucose via anaerobic respiration without the assistance of mitochondria. Ketosis, which is a physiological condition in response to chronic starvation, should not be confused with ketoacidosis, which is severe ketosis causing the pH of the blood to drop below 7.2. Ketoacidosis is a medical condition usually caused by diabetes and accompanied by dehydration, hyperglycemia, ketonuria and increased levels of glucagon. The high glucagon, low insulin serum levels signals the body to produce more glucose via gluconeogenesis, glycogenolysis and ketogenesis. High levels of glucose causes the failure of tubular reabsorption in the kidneys, causing Water to leak into the tubules in a process called osmotic diuresis, causing dehydration and further exacerbating the acidosis. The breath of people in a ketotic state commonly contains acetone, detectable as a sweet smell that may be mistaken for ethyl alcohol. Whether ketosis takes place can be checked by using special urine test strips such as Ketostix. Deliberately induced ketosis through a low-carbohydrate diet has been used to treat medical conditions. The ketogenic diet is an approach to treating epilepsy, and the Atkins Nutritional Approach is marketed for treating obesity. The very low calorie, medically supervised Lighter Life diet also uses ketosis for weight loss. -

Who Still Drinks Caffeine In The Morning??
Arcael replied to ItsGottaGo!'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had caffeine today for the first time in two and a half months, it really upset my stomach And from what I hear it messes with your bloodsugar, causing you to get hungry? -
I'm in the same boat as you, I'm never really hungry and I have yet to have a fill. I usually start my day out with an Optifast shake and a chewable Multivitamin. With added Fiber and Protein that's ~250ish calories right there. Over the day I'll eat lunch meat and cheese sticks, probably 3 or 4 times. For dinner I might have a smartone weightwatchers dinner, but I just started doing this recently and only on the days where I exercise heavily. My caloric intake is somewhere between 750 and 900 calories a day, the weight is melting off.Alot of people will tell you that it isn't enough, but I think it's all based on how YOU feel and how your body reacts to the amount of food you are getting. I try to avoid all carbs if I can, and max out around 30 a day(due to optifast shakes having 20). From what I've been told, you want roughly 3 parts protein 1 part vegi (according to my dietian). I've been having problems with the vegi part which is why I've been buying the frozen meals. As for not losing weight for a week, it happens I'll plateau for a week and then suddenly drop 4-5 pounds. You just have to keep with it. Hope this answered some of your questions

My doctors let me take a shower after 24h but I had that suture glue stuff I think your safe :girl_hug:

Good for you Mary. After awhile you really start enjoying working out, and you feel great the whole next couple of days. It seems to really accel the weight loss (for me anyways). My advice for working out is to just stick with it, you will be sore after your first couple workouts but it gets better. Trust me :girl_hug:

I just hit 75 pounds, only 39 to go I just started going to the rec. center here at UIdaho, it's pretty kickass. Now I have a place to work out three times a week instead of going to a personal trainer.

No fill here yet.

School is going great, dropped one class just to lighten the load a bit (still at 14 credits). I also went to the Cougar vs Vandals NCAA football game today, so I got all my walking in (30 min challenge thingy) I get to see my psych about attention deficit on tuesday, I'm hoping I get everything undercontrol

Any other post-op's ever experience this?
Arcael replied to BigBZ's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Gas-X helps so much with the gas pains, I cannot recommend it enough. -
Just checking in to say that I'm nearly down 70. I won't lose weight for like a week and then all the sudden 5 pounds fall off (atleast in my experience from the last three weeks.) I'm the thinnest I've been since I stopped growing taller.

The "NEVER HUNGRY" thread - post here if that's you
Arcael replied to Wheetsin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm in the same boat as you, I rarely if ever get hungry. Now it takes nothing to fill me up -
Grats Stephanie, 7.5 pounds in a week is pretty insane :huggie:

Semi Update. Just bought size 40 pants two weeks ago, they are already falling off (didnt even get a chance to wear one of the pairs I bought). Buying some 38's next weekend. I started in size 44's which were pretty tight. I visited my personal trainer for the first time since surgery and she was amazed at the amount lost. She thought that I was a gastric patient and even said that I'm losing faster than most gastrics. First week of school is down and life is great. My self-confidence has reached record highs and I'm a lot more social around people. My shoulders are a little sore from the exercise, but other than that I'm having a hard time avoiding a parties and drinking (1 gram of alcohol has 7 calories, that is double what carbs and proteins are), and the primary drink of the college student is Beer which I do enjoy but wont drink due to the high calories and the carbonation effect of the fermentation. I'm scheduled to take do some structured interviews and tests with a psychologist to see if I have AADD. I've been the person people come to for help with Math/Sci/History all my life, and yet I can't get above a C (from Jr. High to Current College). There is a lot more to it that I won't get into here, but I'm hoping I can figure out everything and hopefully figure out ways to improve myself mentally, now that the physical aspect is going full-throttle.
