Do your own fills at home???!!!

Even though this is 100% not recommened. .Getting a huber needle, a bottle of saline, a 1cc syringe, alcohol and a pair of gloves seems way cheeper than the $175-$300.00 these people are paying... oh and don't forget the bandaid...........thats about less than $10.00,,,but going septic is about $150,000.00 per treatment.....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    What would you do?

First of all..Having surery at 450lbs was a major risk in itself. It is indead sad and painfull that she passed away, but I am sure it was more that having the gastric bypass itself that caused her death. Having worked on a gastric bypass wing as a RN I can tell you. I have seen sadness and miracles with this surgery. The largest woman we ever operated on was 800lbs and I was truely terrified for her because I ddin't know if i was going to see her after surgery or not. Needless to say, she survived and to this day is doing well. The surgery saved her life, but it could have turned for the worse..A close firend of mine had gastric bypass, lost 200 lbs, and needless to say gained it back and has now also passed on from complications FROM WEIGHT GAIN.... so you,,,it can go either way.... I am glad you had your surgery. You are onestep closer to being healthier. As for telling your family, it is up to you to make the decision. I believe in the end, they will be happy for you because you have chosen to take control of your health... Peace and may you have a happy and healthy 2011... Onenuttynurse
  3. It will be one year on Dec 28th that is was banded. I have about 4.8 cc in my band. Now before you tell me to rush to the Dr. and get checked out. I have been a RN for 20 years so I know that I will be going in this week to have this check out...Please keep reading on... Everything has been going great until about 3 days ago. Suddenly I now have a sore throat and moderate gurgling in my throat without whatever I eat or drink. this is very odd for me as I do pretty well on a normal basis. If I even take a sip of ANYTHING, i CAN FEEL every single drop go down. This morning i pretty much drank runny oatmeal and about threw it up because it was not wanting to go down.... My last fill was Nov 18th....so this is what I am thinking.. 1. I am experience reflux from a tight band.... 2. Did the restriction kick in after 17 days? Could that be......Never had it before but who the hell knows 3. My band has slipped because it feels high in my chest......... 4. Some type of erosion? Okay experts..what do you think it could be..I am open to your advice...I am calling in the morning for a upper GI to make sure this is still okay..Could it be my band is suddenly tooooo tight? thanks, Onenuttynurse
  4. A small slip is what I am thinking too which really bums me out....I can still eat but the gurglling is driving me insanenow matter when or what or what size of bite or drink i take...The gurgling is odd........Little bit of shortness of breath with it but nothing major.....Thx
  5. Hmmmm. interesting...I have never had restriction yet since having this done until 3 days ago....I can live with the tightness, but the reflux sore throat I cant as I already have a documented hx of several reflux since i was a kid....Hmmmmmm,,,I don't feel sick but a not ruling out a virus......Thanks.
  6. People are odd creatures. I have a person at work that tries to bring me cookies and ice cream. Finally the other day I said..." Either you really like me, or you are trying to fatten me up and sell me at market price".....Then I have a girl who is obsessed with what i eat, and yet she weighs over 300 lbs...Its so hilairous because it drives her crazy that i wont have all the junk food they bring to work.....

    Favorite high protein food?

Hands down it is Tofu for me..I could eat tofu morning, noon and night...Now i eat chicken, turkey and fish too, but for some reason I always go back to the tofu. Its good for you, can mimic almost anything and easy to use.......

    too little food

I am from the US and yes we push Protein like crazy here. However, I think you are okay and will progress to eating more protein as its gets easier for you to eat. Soon you won't have to worry about protein as you get into the groove of healthy eating...You won't have to think about it as much because it will become part of your every day routine. Potatoes are okay to begin with, but be carefull. I would agree with the wasted calories....Congrats and keep up the fantastic work.... onenuttynurse

    What foods can't you eat?

I cant eat any bread at all, no rice, sometimes chicken, no burger, eggs are tough at times, questionable on noodles...Now i can eat steak, turkey(deli or oven), popcorn, nuts, fruits and veggies..Bananas can be kind of fickle...pop about kills me off and makes me throw up...my liquid staple is water and ice tea with splenda....
  11. You already know the answer don't you?

    stuck

Thanks banders...Well its lasted for about 3 hours...It is back to liquids today as I know it is tight and swollen. I ended up having the dry heaves which made my stomach swell..I can feel it.....Even water is a little tough going down this morning......So i won't do anything but proteinshakes and liquids for the rest of the day....Thanks

    stuck

I ate one bite of steak over a 1.5 hours ago, and let me tell you it is Stuck Stuck stuck...I am sliming like crazy, and short of want to vomit, I cant think of anything to get this thing down...It was tiny, but apparently today my band was being fickle....Any ideas:confused:....I am open to any suggestions....

    Nurse Bandsters?

I have been a nurse for 20 years, working 12 hour shifts. I didn't do it because I was afraid of what patients or other co workers would say. I did it due to recurring issues with ICP.....Never really thought i was that over weight, but I am still enjoying the successes of the band and would do it all over again in a heartbeat...Ps. When the neurologist says" if you can lose around 70 lbs it would decrease your chances of your ICP acting up again........thats enough encentive for me..

    Help!!! Hair falling out!!

Believe me its not always a protein issue and I can attest to that. It could be from a whole host of issues, but mostly likely is from the shock you body is going through to losing weight and the surgery it self. My hair is still falling out by the gobs full and I now have a thinning bald spot on the top of my head. Oh well. I am hoping it grows back. I get protein up the waaazooo and take supplements like crazy....met with a nutrtionist as well as a dermatologist...ha..go figure...no luck but to hope it comes to a end soon....Thank Goodness I had thick hair to begin with, however it is very very thin and stringy now......Good Luck....Keep your chin up..
  17. I have 3.1 cc in my band after 8 months. Restriction but not good restriction.....waiting for sweet spot but its a slow process.

    Hair loss

Hi Amber, I too have terrible hair loss and mine has been going on for 8 months now. I have a very thin spot now at the top of my head and in the front. Bummer. I do nixoin, take biotin, mvi, and lots of protein too, and nothing helps it. It just has to run its course and pray it slows down. There was a gal that posted somewhere that after a year , hers was still falling out....OMG...I hope that isn't the case or i wont have any hair left....Good luck and congrats on your surgery....
  19. Sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience so far. I haven't had any issues other than throwing up because I had to learn to slow down and not wolf my food down. Now i have o issues at all being banded 8 months now......give it some time and see if it settles down. Onenuttynurse
  20. Low normal is where you now want to be. Used to be that 120/80 was normal. That is not the case anymore in the medical field. Even though it is acceptable, a more acceptable range would be 110/70 or a little lower....They are coming out with new cardiac research that states to keep the pressure a little on the lower side of normal to reduce oxygen demand on the heart.....
  21. Congratulations and I also credit them for being honest enough to admit their mistakes. Dont see that very often..Good luck and keep up the awesome work.

    Losing my Hair!!!

Sorry to hear about your hair loss. I have also lost a scary amt of hair to the point that i have a very thin spot on the top of my head...I take biotin, tons of vitamins, protein up the wazooooo, and nioxin for the last year....No luck...my dermatologist said Nioxin is good at making your hair shiny and thats it...LOL....oh well i would rather be thinking i am doing something than nothing at all. I take 5000 mcg of biotin daily. All my vitamins are chewable or liquids so i am very compliant...If i have done everything I can do and it still falls out, then i will shave it and have a sexy tatoo placed on my head.....who knows...could be kind of fun......onenuttynurse
  23. Congrats for being off the meds but beware. I have been hospitalized twice since my banding in DEC 09 due to syncope and low pressure with low potassium and magnesium..I am a cardiac RN so i knew right away to go in. However, my pressure is labile so beware. That means it is fluctuating up and down...Keep monitoring your pressure because it will fluctuate and you certainly don't want rebounding.......onenuttynurse
  24. well my husbanad thought i was joking when I told him i was going to do this. He had no idea i was going to nutrition classes and preparing for this. I tried to tell him but he still though i was kidding around. Until he seen the schedule at work that had me marked off as ill for 3 weeks and then he got the drift. Until the day I went in for surgery(no he did not go with me),he still thought it was a joke. He never mentions it because I know he hates the thought of that, but I have my own career and he has his and after 20 years of marriage, I don't need his approval to do something for myself such as becoming healthy.....Good luck bandsters.....
