  1. Hi Iris,

My appointment went well. I now know what time my surgery will be. I go in at 6 a.m. on the 7th and surgery is scheduled at 8:15 a.m. My doctor also told me that there is a good chance provided I follow my preop diet to a T and my liver is nice and soft and small that he will be able to do the single incision lap band procedure!!) I am sooo excited and keeping my fingers crossed on this one! I told my hubby I wish I could have the single incision one. So, hopefully, if everything goes well, I will.)

I start my preop on Saturday. I just got back from the store and bought enough stuff to get me started. I hope I lose some good weight after suffering with the liquids:tt1:

Good luck and all the best. Keep me posted

    Iris

  2. I am pretty sure we aren't supposed to lift anything any heavier than 10 pounds, or so I have read. I have my preop appointment with my doctor tomorrow and have written down various questions to ask him and this will be one of them. Wow!! You only have a week and 2 days to go!!! I have 14 days to go!! What's funny is the lady Theresa that was operated on in the video, she became pregnant not long after she was banded and had her baby in November 2008. She has videos on youtube under the user name Drmalley. Those are interesting as well.

I decided to document my progress on their as well. I figured it would be a good way to keep myself accountable on my journey. :smile2:) Let's keep in touch and let me know how your surgery goes!!)

    How was your appointment?

  3. thank you so much for your quick replies...that was pretty scary for sure. I was in tears for a minute there...I took my pain meds (liquid Lortab) which I haven't had to do in 2 days and got my heating pad out. Whew...it has backed off. Going back to work tomorrow and for certain liquid tylenol and my heating pad are going to be in my tote bag

Thanks again all...everyone has been so great on here :smile2:

Well.. I hope that you feel better and that you take it easy at work. I am glad to hear that you are coming along.

  4. Seeing family Doc Tue. to start the ball rolling. I know I can get lap-band I have a 61.5 BMI! My Ins. (I called last week) will pay if Doc deems it medically necessary. Do you have any advice that may push this along. Information I may need to help it go faster, like a list of diets I have tried (and failed). Doc knows my medical issues. I have decided I want this and I want it now! I need to save my own life and this is the first step! :(

In my opinion you should draft your letter prior to your visit and ask your pcp to place it on their letterhead. Of course tell them you are doing this for bariatric clearance/surgery..I had no problems. This is what I did and it benefitted me greatly. Here is a link to a sample...I included diets such as Atkins, sugar free, low caloric intake, raw foods, etc and was approved no problem

  5. I know what you mean. I wish I could have had him as a doctor. Not that mine isn't good, but I just like Dr. Malley and the way he relates to his patients.

PSJ...did you hear him say not to lift anything heavy...I have read some forums when people have lifted something right after the surgery and they are feeling strain, etc...I think it was a quick procedure though and it helps ease the minor fears I have had. I have also seen videos on youtube but I like this one..

  6. Just remember, I said it before, you posted this question on this forum for everyone, so you actually have to respect everyone opinion. Just because it isn't what you wanted to hear, doesn't mean it doesn't deserve respect..... Jennifer

Respect everyone's opinion...I do not think so when an individual who came seeking advice is told she has a "head problem"...I think it may be safer to say we can agree to disagree...but respect 'everyone's opinion...hmmm

  7. Thank you. I heave been teased since Elementary school, and I have seen what obesity can do to someone as an adult. I am already expierienceing joint pain, which can keep me in bed all day sometimes. I am already bigger than any of my family members were BEFORE they were 18. I have tried so many otehr things, and none have worked.

I have only been a member of this site for an hour at most, and I can already see that I will be able to come here for support! Thank you!

Dr. Kuri does the surgery for your age...Here is a video of a 12 yr old who received the surgery hope this helps...

  8. Iris, would you mind telling me how to get that tickerfactory you have at the bottom of your posts. I see them alot, but can't figure out where to go to get them. Thanks.

Go to tickerfactory.com scroll down near the bottom of the page click on event which is under the wedding, birthday, anniversary section you enter your event date and then select the icons/charting graph that you wish to use.

    God Bless

  9. i do not purge at all,i hoard food and eat in secrecy, large amounts of foods, mostly deserts, but no,no throwing up!

I read an earlier post above and I think you hit the nail on the head when you went to the psychologist and tapped into the real issue at hand. Just as the lapband is a tool to weight loss, our eating habits must change. I truly hope your psych an nutritionist can assist you. I also know it is a one day at a time process so do your best and stay connected to those who can help...Good Luck and best wishes.

  10. Wow, ladies, my heart goes out to you.

I'm wondering if you do the binge eating, do you also engage in the throwing it back up?

I only ask because it seems to me that part would be the more dangerous part for you if you are considering the lap band.

ughhhh...Ladies seek the counsel of your surgeon, bariatric nurse, dietician and psychologist (if applicable)

Their experience and advice hopefully will help you. Bingeing is an illness for many on top of obesity and therefore your situation should not be taken lightly. Good luck

  11. I have also heard from other surgeons (reliable resources) that bands can last for decades.

My surgeon says that some people have had a band 7-10 yrs out with no problems. I cannot speak for any yrs beyond that. Agnes...do you and be happy with your results. I hope you have a successful surgery and I agree jms...data to back up these comments is not hard to find..we have the greatest resource the internet and our surgeons...just ask.

  12. To the original poster...

No I do not think you have a head problem...and thank you for entrusting others to share their opinion...even if it may not be what you would like to hear!

Imo I think you should revisit some options...is the surgery something you really believe you can handle...sure we all think so but part of the psychological process will help you through determining this...

Also... is your weight issue depressing you?Not because you want to look good for your husband...but how do you VIEW YOU?

Whether its 30 or 50 pounds you are feeling kinda crashed behind it and you need answers...whether w.watchers, nutrisystem...atkins, etc. this is your life so choose life and choose it wisely.

I do not agree with you gaining an extra 70 pounds to meet the 100 pound overweight criteria. Locate an honest wlsurgeon and discuss your concerns..maybe you can make an alternative decision but a head problem you do not have you are only human battling obesity of some sort...remember readers there are many forms of obesity...if you are overweight you fit that category...and the contributors to obesity are:

    culture

    genetics

    emotional/psychological

    medical

    gender.... and so on.

    Good luck!

  13. Well,....the band is what you make it and by reading the last couple of posts, they were from people not yet banded. Im sure when THEY finally get their band they too will discover that having a band is NOT a clear cut solution. It takes a long time to adjust to they new way of life, and old habits die hard.If we were all so full of will power then we wouldnt need the band in the 1st place. It can be one hell of a struggle, and until you get the right restriction, you are still fighting the old cravings.

Lets try to help people out with positive words of encouragement, not its your own fault blah blah blah...

There are other reasons people get banded or other bypass procedures...there are other causes of obesity...genetics (my situation), emotional and physical issues, gender...and so on...in any type of surgery your recovery is what you make it...hopefully the band will help me deal with an inherited (against my will) issue as it will help those who have other struggles. :)

  14. I was banded on 11 June 2009. Here is my surgery day story.

At around 9am, the orderly took me down to x-ray and I had the barium swallow. That was ok. It is chalky but it's very sweet. I watched the liquid go through the band on the monitor. And that was when I first saw Felix, sitting nestled in my belly. He's rather a handsome lap band, if I do say so. I think it was love at first sight.

LOL what a cute name...Felix. I hope you are doing better. :)

  15. Well I live in Key West and I called Hollywood Fl. Bariatric center they sent me information and a check list of what I need. Then I notified my insurance company to ask all the question that I needed to know before I made my 1st consultation appointment. Sol far Everything is ok. My insurance is paying for it. They said I don't need a pre approval because it's an out patient procedure and they pay for the lapband. After I see the Psychologist and he approve me. I should be ok. I'm hoping I have it done no later than the week after my 2nd appointment. I can't wait. Everyone here have me excited.

From what I have heard Hollywood Bariatric is really good. I chose Dr. Wizman because he is also good and closer to my home. Good luck!

  16. I am an md who just got banded on june 18th. I am two days post op. Some soreness. Pain pills help except for the supratentorial effects.. Gas x simethicone strips are very helpful.:( Try compazine or phenergan for nasuea. Can I say that beef broth sucks, but chicken not so bad. :unsure:What does seem to amaze me is the differences in some of the post op diets i have read about. I do have a question anybody have any suggestions on faster weightloss after the banding. I mean more excercise, more Protein, sooner fills ? just wondering if any one had any decent tips.

  17. I always find these threads interesting. Someone complains about not having any weight loss and asks for advice.

Then the other posters ask what they've been eating and if they've been exercising, etc...

But then I rarely see the thread starter post in the thread again. That kind of makes it obvious why no weight loss is happening.

 Holly I came to the same conclusion. The band obviously is what you make it!
