Rewards: Things You've Gotten Yourself and/or Are Working Toward
Karamel replied to doodleallday's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When I hit 20lbs (2 days ago) I bought myself a pair of couch shoes. I plan on buying a prada purse when I hit my ultimate goal! -
I worked at a concert venue and we would use nicknames on our nametags. So when ppl would say Karamel said she would get me in free the door ppl knew they didnt actually know me lol. I became karamel because I worked with 2 gay guy who were a mixed couple and we called them vanilla and chocolate and since im a skin tone in between I became Karamel lol. I had to make it a little more interesting than Caramel so I spelled it with a K

I started walking the day after surgery. The sooner you start to be active the better. At first it was to the end of the driveway and then to the end of the block and so on. I'm up to 2.5 miles a day 5 weeks post op and am waiting to be cleared to do more than just walk. My surgeon said only walking cuz he wanted my ab muscles to heal completely. Cant wait to get back in spin class

Arterial Blood Gases...The most painful Labdraw..WHY?
Karamel replied to cindyj33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a respiratory therapist and I drawn ABG's on patients all the time. The problem with them is that to get to your artery you have to go right by a bundle of nerves hence the pain. I can only say that it is a useful tool for someone having surgery because it can be an indicator of an underlying condition. An ABG measures blood pH, oxygenation, CO2 and bicarb levels. I know that doesnt help the pain but I had to put my two cents in since I'm usually the one on the other side of the needle lol. -
Its on his approved list, I just like mine sweet so decided to give it up for now.

I havent had any coffee since surgery switched to iced tea. Since its so hot it made the transition much easier. Give that a try with a artificial sweetner.

How much time did you take off work?
Karamel replied to bayareanan's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I took 2 weeks off. I was a bit wiped the first day but i was also going stir crazy. Granted I was up to walking 1.5 miles per day and still have not gottwn a fill but I think the exercise helped me have to energy to make it through a 12 hr shift. Good luck and keep us posted -
Curious...what side is your port on?
Karamel replied to Rutiglius's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Recommended Bikes for Plus size girls???
Karamel replied to health4life's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I may not be much help here but.... I would say that most mountain bikes and the combo mount/road bike generally have narrow seats. What you can do is buy the bike you want and buy a new wider seat with a gel cover for comfort. Otherwise you will have to do like i did for spin class and develop spots on your but that eventually stop hurting lol -
Problems with Incisions Post-Surg?
Karamel replied to gatorgal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My incision was right below my bra line and unless I sat straight up or stood straight up it rubbed and I had pain. I have been rubbing aloe vera on it twice a day and its healing pretty well (banded on June 11th). It did kind of keiloid (sp) on the edges. Im lucky im a clothes horse and love to buy bras. The only thing that has saved me is changing into a different bra every day and washing them in between wears. Washing them keeps them tight and they dont slip down as often. I used to work retail and noticed most women have about 4-5 bras, I have about 28 lol. -
My port is near top center cut. If you press kind of lightly you will feel something very firm or even hard. May depend on how much swelling you have if you can feel it but you will definately notice a little bit of pain

hostile enviroment ... training, doughnuts and the angry obese
Karamel replied to Kristine73's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Awesome! I am not sure I could have resisted at least trying a donut lol. As for your co-workers, well they will either learn to get over it or continue to resent you but I am glad you are not letting it affect you and your progress -
Yes! My doc is all the more activity the better but he failed to mention how my belly would jiggle when I walk and that would cause port pain. I just kind of hold the spot that hurts still while I walk and that helps

I was banded on the 11th and I feel really good now. I do hate this mush diet but its better than liquid. I sometimes wonder about my doc, most of the posts i read have ppl staying overnight (I was outpatient), and on a mush diet for a lot longer than I am going to be (June28 reg food). Oh well I will see how things go. I did walk half a mile today but could not go any further because of port pain.

How long before you went back to work/school?
Karamel replied to sarae's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was on the 11th and I was very weak from the liquid diet. Like others have stated everyone is different but I do think a week is the minimum.
