Group- 5 day Pouch Test
Lovinglapbandliving replied to Lovinglapbandliving's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Way to go every body! How did you all make it thru the 4th? Personally I messed it up bad. SInce my hubby said dont count or measure anything I was going to just have to rely on my lapband. I didnt know I was able to eat so much!!!!!! Then again I only have 1.5 cc in my 4 cc band. Time for a fill? 5 day pouch test here I come! But I need to tweek it to be..... HIGH Protein (40%of calorie intake minimum) LOW Carb. (30% of calorie intake Max.) and DRINK DRINK DRINK- 1000 calories and 64 oz of Water. This is what the nutritionist at my surgeons office recemends The nurse at my fill dr.s office is very blunt I love it! I told her I had restricted my calories thru will power to 600-800 calories per day to keep loosing weight with no fill and she plainly said, " that was stupid!" and we started talking about metabolism and protien. so I have a challenge set in front of me. The liquid diet will flush my system and condition my pouch to function properly. And get me off of grazing! If the pouch capacity hasnt reduced by the time the 5 day PT is done I will get a fill appt scheduled. But I hesitate getting a fill too soon because I HAVE to eat about 1000 calories or so to keep my metabolism going or it tanks and I cant loose weight! 4th of July Holiday Recovery- Starting monday- 5 day PT round #3!!!!! And walking daily. Anyone want to join me? -
My 2 cents is in blue so no one get confused. So why do we hit those nasty plateau's??? That's one reason it's almost always easiest to lose weight at the start of a diet, and harder later on, Kimball says: "When you are very overweight your metabolism is already running so high that any small cut in calories will result in an immediate loss." Then, when you lose significant amounts of body fat and muscle, your body needs fewer calories to sustain itself, she says. That helps explain why it's so easy to regain weight after you've worked to lose it. "If two people both weigh 250 pounds, and one got there by dieting down from 350 and the other one was always at 250, the one who got there by cutting calories is going to have a slower metabolism," says Yanagisawa. "That means they will require fewer calories to maintain their weight than the person who never went beyond 250 pounds." WHAT TO DO... Eat More, Burn Better Of course, the diet advice we'd all love to hear is "Eat more and lose more weight!" But what really works is "Eat more often, and you'll lose more weight." Small, but frequent, meals help keep your metabolism in high gear, and that means you'll burn more calories overall. YEA! this is what we have all wanted to hear! here is a great link on revving up the metabolism... http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/guide/make-most-your-metabolism?page=2 and here is some info I have gleaned from it. ""When you put too many hours between meals, your metabolism actually slows down to compensate," says Kimball. If you then eat a huge meal -- at the same time your metabolism is functioning as if you're starving -- your body wants to hold on to every calorie. While this won't make much difference on an occasional basis, Kimball says, make it a way of life and it can get harder to lose or maintain weight. Kimball's advice is borne out by the findings of a study that was presented at the 2005 annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine. Researchers from Georgia State University reported that when athletes ate snacks totaling about 250 calories each, three times a day, they had greater energy output then when they didn't snack. The study also found that snacking helped the athletes eat less at each of their three regular meals. The final result was a higher metabolic rate, a lower caloric intake, and reduction in body fat."" What GREAT news this is for US bandsters! I was taking things all wrong. I was practicing "self control" all day long only eating when my belly button was eating my back bone! GROWLING "Hungery, FEED ME" So to me lesson one is eat every 2-4 hours when I am feeling hungery It is ok. NO MORE GUILT FOR SNACKING! this was verified also on 2 other sites listed below... http://health.msn.com/fitness/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100096731 they said.... " 3. Eat. It may sound crazy to those trying to lose weight by severely restricting their daily caloric intake, but the problem with this old school of thought, explains Michigan dietician Julie Beyer, is that it actually slows metabolism. “Every cell of the body is like a flashlight bulb,” she explains. “When our bodies don’t get enough food, or fuel, every cell burns less brightly.” Recent studies show that eating smaller meals every three to four hours aids metabolism and weight loss. 4. Ditch the sugar. Of course, you still have to make good choices about what you eat. “When you eat sugar you throw your metabolic switch into fat storage mode,” says Lieberman, who suggests a predominately low glycemic index diet, meaning foods that, unlike sugars, are broken down gradually to help maintain an even blood-sugar level. 5. Don’t skip breakfast. It’s a fact that people who eat a healthy breakfast are skinnier than people who don’t. And try to think outside the box. A breakfast bowl of vegetables and brown rice is a great way to kick-start your metabolism for the day. 6. Include hot foods. If Mexican and Thai are favorites, you’re in luck. “Spicy food that has hot peppers in it appears to boost metabolism,” Lieberman says. 7. Drink green tea. “There are unhealthy things that can boost your metabolism, like a really strong cup of coffee, or nicotine, but I would never say go have a cigarette!” says Michelle Streif, a personal trainer in Nebraska. Nor overdo it on caffeine, which also has undesirable side effects. Instead, go for green tea, says Lieberman, which is known to stimulate metabolism longer and more effectively than coffee. 8. Don’t forget H2O. Staying well hydrated is essential to flushing the body of toxic byproducts that are released when fat is burned. Cold water may also give your metabolism at least a small boost because energy is required to heat the body." So what do we eat?? check this site out... http://www.ecosalon.com/boost-metabolism/ THis is a great site giving us the facts about PROTEIN! http://www.wellnessresources.com/tips/articles/how_protein_helps_weight_loss/ A little bit from it. I am glAD i LOVE EGGS! " Eating two eggs for breakfast has been shown to boost weight loss by 65%, compared to the same amount of calories from carbohydrates – like a bagel." "The amount of quality protein in your diet is the single most important calorie that influences your metabolic rate, favorably influencing weight loss. Quality protein also helps you sustain muscle during weight loss, improve muscle fitness, improve immunity, improve antioxidant function, build HDL cholesterol, and enhance insulin and leptin function – all of which contribute toward optimal weight management efforts over time." These are some great facts! I hope this helps others on thier Lapband journey as it has me. Good Night.

Group- 5 day Pouch Test

day 1&2 drink drink drink- as much as you can- water, shakes, liquidy soups- you want to make sure you fight the hunger monster with lots of protein and water. day 3- soft meats- tuna, ect. @ meal times. dont drink w/ meals or 1 hr before or after this messes with feeling the pouch but other that that. DRINK DRINK DRINK. (I try to stick with more protein less carbs) Day 4- med meats added to your meals- always add to what you are doing if you still like tuna eat tuna. Day 5- harder meats- steak ect. CHEW CHEW CHEW the goal is to take in... AT LEAST 8 cups of water- 64oz/day- flushes out toxins, and cold water add to your metabolic rate. Adds to feeling full. Less than 120 grams of carbs/ day- carbs break down quickly and if not burned get turned to sugar then fat. Atleast 40-60 grams of protein depending on your weight and goals. protien takes longer to digest and builds lean muscle mass which burn more fat over all raising your metabolism. I hope this helps -

Lapband Portion & Metabolism
Lovinglapbandliving commented on Lovinglapbandliving's blog entry in Blog 67084
Ok everyone, Lapband takes care of the intake of calories just why does our bodies greedily hold on to every calorie that enters our mouths???? METABOLISM!!!!!! I am on a bit of a rant here but I for one am sick of this sluggish metabolism that is insistant to "Survive" thru this "STARVATION period" it seems to think it is in. I am going to make it my personal goal to find a way to get in enought of the right kind of calories and the right activities to beat this Ol' body at its own game! First I will learn what the metabolis is, how it works, and how to get it to BURN BURN BURN UP THIS FAT I have successfully stored away in my time of plenty. I also need to learn how does the lapband effect the metabolism. With this knowledge I will see success. You wil too!!!!!! Also, my husband is home until after the 4th of July which means it will be inpossible to stick to liquids all day until my protien dinner. I will do the best I can to eat healthfully and I will LISTEN to the band when It says WHOA no more food. But NO 5 day pouch test this week. This will be a great chance the stretch my metabolism, focus on protien, and see what "normal lapband living" is like. I know it is not being on a liquid diet 5/7 all year. I will report back with my findings. -

New to the Process- deciding where to have it done
Lovinglapbandliving commented on migrus's blog entry in Blog 69278
Congrats on the decision to get the lapband! I too am self pay. I found a great DR who practices in TJ also. My surgery costed $5500 which was all inclusive. All I had to do is get there. The plane ticket and passport. I used Dr. Kelly, he has a ton of experience and great bedside manner. There are a bunch of surgeons out there and it is important to take the time to get to know your dr and his support staff for all followup purposes. Let me know if you would like to visit with him and he can answer all of those important dr questions. -
That is great to get your health back on track while you are young. Being healthy will influence the oppertunities available to you all of youe life! I am glad to see you here. I too have the lapband, feel free to ask me any questions you would like.

Lovinglapbandliving replied to Cloteal's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
If you can get approval that is great! If you cant dont give up the lapband is well worth while. I ended up going to Mexico because I am self pay. There are many great surgeons there who have tons of experience. Take the time to consult with as many as you need to feel 100% confident in who you have chosen because you will have a life long relationship with the surgeon and thier office. The lapband takes time and Maintenance. It ia a great tool. I went to Dr. Kelly and he charged $5500. There is also Dr. Ortis who comes highly recemended, I dont know what he charges. For fills and after care there may be a surgeon local who takes patients from mexico, just call around and ask. also there is fill centers USA who has centers all over and they do have an after care program. Good luck, let me know if any of this helps. -
I like soymilk. here is a link that gives the nutritional info Calories in Soy milk - The Calorie Counter basically- 120 calories- 9.2 g of protien/ cup- no prservatives I use a soy milk maker and 1/2 cup of soaked Beans. I like to add a couple of TBS of my favorite coffee creamers. or vanilla and raw sugar. it costs 13 cents for the milk and I dont know how much for the 2 TBS creamer. Changing the flavor with the creamer keeps me from getting board with it and s bag of soy beans was only $17.99 for a year supply. the maker cost me $110 AND HAS REALLY PAID FOR ITSELF! it is odd how the fills work. I too just had my first fill and I was sick feeling after even water. But I hav not had a change in the hungery feeling feeling. I still am hungery every 2 hours or so and eating about the same as before which is about 8 oz drink. 8 oz fills me up but is only lasts a couple of hours. Isnt is strange how it is so different for different people. -
Thinking about Lap Band but have questions
Lovinglapbandliving replied to carolyn22's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
These are completely right! The lapband has helped with so many of these types of conditions. It is good that you spend time getting educated! there are some really great surgeons out there and some really bad ones! If something happen and you are not able to get the insurance to pay you may want to keep Surgeons from mexico in mind! Just like in the states there are good and bad. I would talk with as many as it takes with a good list of questions and concerns before settling on the one because you will be starting a life long relationship with both the DR. and his staff for followup fills ect. The good surgeons will take time to consult with you over the phone for free before deciding the lapband is the best option for you. there are many weightloss surgeries and they all have pros and cons. In Mexico there are a couple I interviewed like Dr. Ortes and I actually used Dr. Kelly. They are both very good. Take the time to find the right match for your goals, lifestyle ect. Good luck! email me if I can help. -
