Is anyone keeping their surgery a secret?
WilliamK replied to Dreamjeans's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thats ok BillOh each person is different. I must say though that times are different from what they used to be. Everyone watches the TV shows with people getting the WLS and a lot know about it. All i know is i feel so much better that everyone knows to be honest. I did feel that trying to make an excuse would backfire when any of my friends asked me what was up as it would mean digging the lie that bit further, also i am terrible at lying. The reaction though of my work/friends/family is by far the best thing i did by telling. When your obese and everyone can see you need help how or why would anyone want criticise you for getting the help. I dont have any health issues associated with being over weight but its only a matter of time. I just wanted to point out that you should not be afraid, you can be honest about what you have done. Its a positive thing for everyone that had WLS that your doing something about your weight - not just sitting there feeling sorry for yourself and blaming metabalism or family genes or other crap, and still putting the crap food in your mouth. I think everyone that has WLS deserves to be supported by their family/friends/work as it will benefit them all in their relationships with you. Sorry to rant... -
Banded 05/01/09 and discouraged already
WilliamK replied to tmbennett8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, Posted in mens room about this. With no fill being done yet for another 4 weeks from band insertion i felt ok by day 5 of the OP so just got to be carefull during this period. Thanks to the boards here have kept weightloss going. Not going to solids of any kind till week 4 as i did try and felt bloated and knowing that feeling means no weightloss. So staying with following as am loosing quite well so far, Usual day is not time dependent, its hunger dependent but have basically:- 1.Mulitvitamin tablet + Actimal drink 2.Home made Soup(any) or Heinz if i havt shopped 3.Light Yoghurt Drink(1.3%fat 500g - through day as i feel hungry as its filling) 3.Depending how full i feel either Protein Shake/Home made Soup(any) or Heinz if i havnt shopped So far am still loosing before first fill. Just got to keep going and not expect an unadjusted band to do it for you. After reading some of the boards here i can see that even after the first fill if i havnt hit the sweet spot where the band and my food is balanced i think i will still have to be carefull once i get to solids. -
Think i am following the usual path of no restriction following banding. I get my first fill on 11th June so not to far away. Just got to keep my liquid diet going i think as i have full appetite back and i feel i can eat anything at present without issue. Anyone else find that?

If you havn't had a fill like me i can actually eat anything at the moment but i was told by my surgeon not to go to the gym until past my first fill. Purly walking for the first months because gym's promote muscle development. As muscle weighs more than fat your weight will not reduce as fast but your inches will. So i am sticking to my diet although i could eat anything and tuff it out till first fill. Remember banding is 60% the band and 40% you still. You need to make a mental change in how you deal with food first off then start slow gym work. Slow weight loss is more beneficial than fast weight loss due to the skin elasticity takes time to recover. I am sure if you ask someone with excess skin and fast weight loss if they wished it went slower with less excess skin, they would agree slow is better, dont worry and wait for the fills to catch you at the right restriction. Dont worry so much about the gym first off, whats more important is yes regular exercise(aerobic not cardio) and concentrating on managing the dietry side of the banding. Finding what works for you on the food front i half the battle. -

KayVee the thing i dont understand is why you think people would be food police? The whole reason you tell people is not so that they should know or have an opinion about it. Its done in my eyes because those people are there to help and support you all the way, if they are real friends. There is nothing worse than having a real bad day - taking it out on someone because you cant tell them why you feel ill or why you cant eat something or worse why you just been sick. It happens. Your true friends and family are there to help you on your journey and like mine some have already helped me. Work got me a Gym membership, my friends wife asked me over as i wanted some recipes and she is going to show me some home made Soups and other goodies for my diet. I just think that the reason people whisper behind peoples back or act differently to you etc is that they think your not telling them the truth, or that they are upset that you cant be honest with them. Most people wont even care what your doing as they have their own lives to live, its only us fatties that think they will talk about us or that they will think a certain way as thats the way we think about ourselves. -
2 Weeks pre-op diet? Dam, my surgeon said i only needed 5 days. Just use your common sense when it comes to eating and drinking. I was sent soups and shakes and told to eat 5 portions of fruit and drink 1.5ltrs of fluids + per day. As both shakes and soups tasted crap i substituted them for equivalent mainstreams with same calorie content and they tasted nice. Then i ate my 5 potions of fruit between meals and drank only Water for the 5 days as i felt i wanted it. There is no set times or periods to stick to some people dont eat early some do. Some eat later some not. Its all personal to you. All i know is i didn't stuggle with the pre-op and was looking forwards to the OP,lost 17LBS in the week went from weight in 24st 10lbs to 23st 7Lbs pre-op weigh in. Its all down to you to accept the pre-op is the start of your new life and readying your stomach for the reduction in processing of food. During this time i was also taking multi Vitamin tablets and actimal drinks in the morning when i got up which i do still take now as routine.

Is anyone keeping their surgery a secret?
WilliamK replied to Dreamjeans's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some people keep things secret some dont but this boils down to certain attitudes of the people that are around you. I am lucky that everyone around me is positive about weightloss and the fact that i am trying to help myself be that with a band or a diet. I have yoyo dieted for some 10years loose 50Lbs here and there bu overtime i always put it back on. When i decided on the op i told my family/friends and work mates. Since doing this i have had nothing but support including from work who have setup a gym membership for me. I dont associate with people that have no respect for what i am doing. At the end of the day i have put up with 20yrs of peoples looks and jokes about weight and now i am loosing weight they get jealous and say i am cheating...well FU to be honest. I dont hang around with anyone that has an issue with what i am doing, i have more things to worry about than your petty thoughts on banding. So tbh if you have a good family and social group tell them. If you dont - keep it a secret and you'll never feel your 100% honest with anyone of them. For me i want to be able to talk about how i feel to my friends and family and not have to think - watch my mouth and i cant say that or you cant say this. be positive, surround yourself with positive people and loosing weight is a whole lot easier. -
Ref to food:I am eating thick homemade soups at present, yoghurt's and yoghurt drinks etc. Also had this weekend family Sunday dinner which i had gravy, 1 mashed protatoe and Sweed, which was nice as i could sit with the family at dinner time still. I think after my first fill i might have to amend it slightly and move back to thinner soups/shakes till i am ready to move back onto phase 2 food. Phase 3 in 6-8 weeks i cant wait for. I know at present i could eat anything i like but sticking to the diet is the main thing here. The band is a 60% helper in weightloss 40% is still you training your brain to eat differently.

There was a program on this morning show in UK showing the band. I think fern Britton had it fitted because if it but she didnt tell anyone and got a lot of stick on TV for it.

Hi Annie, nice to hear from you. Will outline the things i know about it.Firstly here is the site with the exact detail:-
Easyband Gastric Band obesity Surgery - Weight Loss Clinic - Healthier Weight
Professor Favretti and Dr Ashton did my operation.
The band itself as the Professor says is the rollsroyce of bands. It is a normal band base but there is no fluid to move the band in/out. It uses a telemetric signal which controls the opening and closing of the band. You dont need to undress even its done by putting a device on your chest and just type in how wipe you want it.For my op i had 5 days pre-op diet. The op leaves you with 4 small 1 stitch which will disappear and a small 3 stick sucher cut near your breast bone where the receiver is placed(equiv of the port) which will aslo disappear. 1000 characters is to little for messages..lol

Hi, Banded on Saturday 16th may in Manchester. Flew back to bristol on Monday, back to work on Tuesday. Did you guys get a fill straight off with the band?
-
I did my pre-op but was advised only needed to be 5 days. They sent me a box with all the weeks food in it. However after tasting the shake i made my own, and after tasting the Soup, i made my own. Stuck to drinking Water and the advised me to have 5 portions of fruit a day. I actually lost 14lbs in the week as i enjoyed the Soups and shakes i made. None were high fat and calories were the same. A even had cuppa soups as an alternative. Shrinkage of the liver and preparing for fluids is all thats being done. Try to stick in there as its the start of a big change for you. Training the mind is also part of the change in how you view food i think anyways. Be it 5days or 7/8 days its just 1 week of restricted diet. You have been over weight for longer than that what is a week of trying to make a change?

Anyone had the easyband with Healthier Weight
WilliamK replied to milton5a's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
No worries glad i could help. I actually was going for the normal band and thought i knew best. On the friday i was due to have the gastric band in bristol with Spire i spoke to someone that had a bad experience with them. He did however say to speak with another guy that had many yrs of problems with banding and he pointed me to healthier Weight. After speaking with them i was very confident especially after seeing Dr ashtons and Prof Favarati's Exeperience and the fact that the prof has been doing this for 25yrs. I was scared like you but its ok. The tell you everything and you always feel very well looked after. I must say though the nursing staff there were fantastic. Funny thing was when my wife stayed in the room the nurses said that they wouldnt have known that i was the patient 1 day after the op as i looked as well as my wife. I blamed it on the fact she was worrying about me during the night on saturday. -
Preop i did just 5 days Monday to saturday and then had op saturday. They sent me shakes and Soups and a full dietry pack box for the week. The shakes tasted like crap but the Soup after 2 days also we bad. Swapped to cupa soups and made my own shakes, Ate 5 portions of fruit between meals so that i didnt cheat. Lost 1 stone in the week up to op. Its all about shrinking your liver to make the op that bit easier and ready your body for the Fluid diet post op thats all. Dont worry about it. Your gonna feel 100% happy after the OP, its a life changing event tbh. Ref who i told - i told all my family and friends and my work also. ALL!!! have been supportive including work who have sorted out a gym for me and support me daily. Once people know that you are making a change and the reaosn why they will support you no matter what. Anyone that is negative towards you in this matter "you dont need to know them". Positive people enforce you in your ability to progress with your weight loss. I dont have anyone around me that is not anything but positive about the operation. I have been a dieter for some 8-10 yrs - yoyo dieting loose 3 stone - put on 3.5 stone, loose 4stone - put on 4.5 stone. My family has issues with hearts etc so i don't want to be wasting any more time on yoyo dieting. Taking control of myself is the most satisfying thing i think i have ever done. Having been at my highest weight i decided enough was enough. So tell who you like and then you will see who your real friends/family are.

Anyone had the easyband with Healthier Weight
WilliamK replied to milton5a's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ask away. I had the telemetric band on saturday 16th May. Hospitl 10/10 Doctors/after care 10/10. Band 10/10. The are more benefits to the telemetric band than those of the normal band and i will tell you some which influenced me:- 1.No fluids in the band to be affected by pressure. I fly alot and this band is not affected by pressure changes. 2.No chance of leakage over the yrs to come(no fluids) 3.No injections to modify fills. All done externally with cloths on and very fast. Less chance of infection(always a chance) 4.Fast recovery with the procedure. 5.After loosing a lot of weight your normal port will show. Telemetric does not. 6.Cost is same as normal band 7.2yrs of free fills 8.2yrs of aftercare covered by the band supplier. Say for instance your band wont open or close, who is going to pay for that to get fixed? How long will it take. They sort that out for you and fast. Its all down to you. All i know is i feel great, made the right decision and had the best possible surgeon and anesthetists going and thats why i am as happy as i am now. Prof Franco Favretti Dr Ashton P.S lost 2stone since i started pre-op diet and 1st week of recovery. Yes i am eating a lot and dont feel hungry and yes i even had sunday dinner with the family( Mash potatoe, Sweed, Gravy) so its not so bad at present time. -
When do you start to feel normal?
WilliamK replied to Pangaeus's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
lol YEH SORRY - ment to say, was it the standard band or the telemetric band? Its just that it seems to me that if you get a restriction straight off the mark you will take longer to recoever thats all. At the end of the day you do it in your own time, there is no rush -
Hi, The names William, was banded on 16th May in the UK with the TAGB easyband. Just hope its ok to say hi here, was not sure if UK people came on here but thought its a good place to get information on long term weight loss etc. Had the LAGB band fitted and its great. I felt normal after day 5 and am now back to work and infact flown in 7 days twice without issue, (flight times 45mins and 2hrs30mins). Anyways just wanted to say hi and that i will be around for the coming happy months which have already started.

When do you start to feel normal?
WilliamK replied to Pangaeus's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did you guys have the gastric band? As i felt normal after day 5 on my band(TAGB). I think it maybe that because my first restriction is not done until week3 that its easier as its totally open still. I am back at work after 5 days and have flown twice since banding with no issues. I have my hunger back but am sticking to the defined diet my doc advised me on. I think depending on how the doc decides to restrict and how much restriction you get depends how fast your recovery is. Having spoke to many banders they are quite shocked how well i have been and the only factor here seems to be that i dont get any restriction till week3, ie once the stomach has recovered along with the rest of your body. Basically your recovery is very dependent on you. Get up and walk as much as you feel happy with. Drink as you feel comfortable. Walking for me i think coupled with no restriction till week3 has saved my recovery so much. P.S most of the TAGB banders i have spoke to have recovered very quickly after the OP also.
