  1. I did a 3 week liquid preop diet and lost 20 pounds. It really prepared me and it did kick start the weight loss. It also helped with my motivation (its great to see the weight coming off...makes you feel like you can succeed).
  2. Hi Rebahorn! Congrats on your surgery! I was just banded yesterday. Sounds like we're at the same point in our respective journeys. Anyways, an effect of anesthesia is sometimes inability to urinate. This also happened to me - a couple hours after the surgery I felt like I had to urinate. I sat on a bedpan for an hour and a half before anything actually happened. Its pretty normal so don't worry! Good luck with your recovery!
  3. Thanks for adding me! My surgery is tomorrow so keep your fingers crossed:P are you already banded?

  4. Thank you!! I will let you know how it goes. How are you doing since your surgery?

  5. I had my first visit at the end of March. My surgery is tomorrow (June 18th). I could have done it sooner (probably middle of May) but I was finishing a master's degree and wanted to do it after graduation. Originally the surgery was scheduled for June 11th, but got postponed until the 18th because of a test I needed. Hope this helps!
  6. My surgery is this Thursday (June 18). I met with the anesthesiologist at the beginning of June. She said that there is a small possibility that they will need to insert the breathing tube before I am completely out. She said something about having the breathing tube inserted when I'm halfway sedated or something, because of the size of my throat (I think). Has anyone had the breathing tube put in before the anesthesia was administered (or before it was completely effective)? If you did, what was the experience? I am completely scared about it. Any comments or reassurance would be great. Thanks!

    Bandster Hell AND Surgeon Hell

I agree with what has been said here. That type of approach to patients is completely unprofessional. Additionally, studies have shown that arrogant physicians are often the same physicians who make errors. There is a difference between refusing to enable someone and verbally abusing them. You want a doctor who is honest and upfront with you, and who will not enable you, but who will also treat you with respect and give you support during a life-changing event.
  8. This is a weird question, but did anyone lose their sex drive as their weight continued to go up, and did anyone gain their drive back after they started losing weight with their band?

    Lapband's dirty little secret

I am really sorry for your experience with your surgeon. It sounds horrible  However, I do want to just briefly, and respectfully point out, that it is not all surgeons who are like that. There are definitely bad ones, but not all are bad. My surgeon has been really wonderful. I am having my surgery in a big city hospital, which is also a teaching hospital. Most doctors in these types of facilities don't even have time to see their patients face-to-face. My surgeon called me personally two days in a row to work out some confusions with a test I had done (he also apologized profusely for the confusion), and additionally, I was having some issues with the billing department in the hospital and my doctor called the billing department personally to ask them what is going on (almost all doctors, big city hospital or private practice, delegate this to a secretary or researcher). I am so sorry for your horrible experience, but its important not to imply that that is the case with all bariatric surgeons. And if I move from Philadelphia (which I may in about a year), I know my surgical team will help me to get a referral to a new, equally excellent surgeon in whatever area I move to. Good luck with your search for a new surgeon (you should definitely report the old one) and I hope that you don't have any really serious medical complications as a result of your band!
  10. My surgery is June 18th. I have been spending a lot of time on this site, reading posts of people who have been banded and successful (the successful part is really important!!). I like to look at the before and after pictures too and just imagine that it could be me someday! I'm also creating an eating plan which I am going to try and stick to. I pretty much plan to do high protein, low-carb. Its been helpful to start thinking of that kind of thing now. It makes me feel less nervous. Also, the weight loss (about 16 pounds so far) on the pre-op diet is very encouraging and makes me feel like I can do this!!

    Messed Up BIIGGG TIME!!! Help!!

I haven't been banded yet (my surgery is June 18th), but I don't think you completely messed up. I mean, a week out is probably not the best time to eat foods like chicken nuggets and fries (just because you are healing), esp. if you ate them fast. You should go see your doc just to make sure nothing got stuck/slipped/etc. but if you are feeling fine then there is probably a good chance that you are fine (however, the only person who can tell you for sure is your doc). Just take it as a learning experience and keep on going with the prescribed post-op eating plan that you discussed with your doctor. Congrats on the 30 pounds! Use it as motivation to continuing working with you band and to stick with your eating plan!
  12. I am also on slim fast for preop. Which are you using? Right now I'm using Slimfast Optima, but in re-examing the label, I found that there are a lot of carbs in it. I may switch to Slim fast low carb. What are you using?
  13. THAT IS WONDERFUL! congratulations and kudos to your firm abs haha! So did you stay overnight in the hospital or did you leave at 6PM the same day?? Anyhow, I'm so glad everything was great for you. I will let you know how mine goes when I come home next week! Good luck with your first few days with your new band!

  14. I am still on my preop diet and I have cheated once so far with salmon. My fiancee had just taken the LSAT (law school admission test) and he wanted to go for steak. So I had salmon. My surgery got postponed (it was supposed to be June 11th, now it is June 18th), so when I have my surgery I will have actually been on the diet for 3 weeks so I figured that it would be okay that one time. Hopefully I was right.

    Liquid Diet Torture

My surgery was postponed (it was supposed to be today, but is now June 18th) so I will be on the pre-op liquid diet for 3 weeks by the time I have my surgery. I cheated once, but it was with salmon. I'd rather have 3 weeks of less satisfying meals, than wake up from anesthesia excited to have a lap band and find out that they actually couldn't do the surgery.
  16. hey sorry Ive been MIA. The diet is not so fun, but Ive also just been sticking to it. I like the weight loss and its motivated me to stick to it. Also I dont want any issues on surgery day, and since I will have been on it for 3 weeks before surgery I'm not anticipating any problems with the liver. Anyways, good luck tomorrow, and please give me an update when you get home!!

  17. Dr. Soriano is my doc. He's a member of the bariatric team at Temple University Hospital. My surgery is June 18th. I feel so comfortable with him, I think he is an excellent doctor and I feel confident that there will be no issues with my surgery.

    Getting Banded on June 11th!

Hi Misty! Thanks for your reply! Where do you live? My initial search for surgeon was nerve wracking, as I didn't know anything about any of them. I defintely had to do a lot of research to find the one I was comfortable with and who also had a reputation for being an excellent surgeon. On another note, my surgery got postponed to June 18th. So looks like I'll have to wait an extra week. Ah well. I'm still so excited!
  19. Hi everyone! I've been playing around on the site for a few days now and thought I'd make an introduction. My name is Jessica. I'm 26 years old. I just completed my Master's degree a couple of weeks ago. I'm from the Philly area (for now). I am getting banded on June 11th by Dr. Ian Soriano (Temple University Hospital) and am SO excited! I have been on my pre-op diet for 3 days so far, and am doing okay. I've actually lost about 6 lbs so far. I'm not really hungry...the biggest obstacle is getting through the cravings (especially for carbs and other fatty foods). I have actually been staying inside mostly, for that reason. I went out today and walking through the city, there were so many smells from all of the amazing restaurants....anyways, it didn't make it easier! I also created a blog: Violinist With A Band . I will really try to update it regularly. Its my first blog! Happy to be here and looking forward to sharing experiences!

    Low Carb Peanut Sauce

Hi! Here is the recipe for the low carb peanut sauce. I'm not banded yet (June 11th!) but I think when I get to the mushies stage I will make it and add it to some pureed soft tofu. 1/2 cup creamy Peanut Butter with nothing added 4 tablespoons rice vinegar 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste) 1/2 to 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger root (optional) 1/2 to 2/3 cup Water
  21. Hey! Im doing alright. The pre-op diet is getting harder. I'm really craving something to chew. My surgery is June 11th and Im getting excited! how are you doing?

  22. Hey willow! Congrats on your upcoming surgery!! My surgery is June 11th and Im so excited. Pretty happy also to have found this support network. Also, it looks like we've started with similar weights - I started around 283 and am down to about 275.5 on the pre-op diet (this is my 4th day on the diet). You must be my similar height because my goal is 130. I'm 5'2. Are you 5'3?

Those are my kitties! Reesee (the striped/swirly one) and Rhubarb (white with some patches:P)! I love them to death! Although, their vet said that they also need to lose a little weight haha:P

  23. Hi! We are both having a June 11th surgery!

  24. Hi! We are both having a June 11th surgery!

  25. Hi all! I am being banded on June 11th at Temple University Hospital. Was just wondering if there is anyone getting their surgery at TUH with Dr. Soriano (my surgeon) or Dr. Meilahn? If not, anyone from the Philly area getting it done elsewhere (Penn, Jefferson, etc.)?
