Medic Alert Bracelets - Are they recommended?
Diva Girl replied to Diva Girl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi again..... I just searched the whole site and found some great input on this subject and the general feeling is that we definitely should wear one after surgery. If anyone is interested, I'll give you the links to a few places on line where you can get some cute ones. However, I'm still confused as to exactly what the bracelet should say. Any input would be appreciated. -
1 week post op and liquid diet a problem.
Diva Girl replied to Vince Campisi's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Vince, 17 pounds in one week is pretty amazing, that's for sure. Are you getting the recommended amount of Protein p/day? (65-70 grams?). Are you getting an appropriate amount of calories? As far as the spasms go, I'd definitely talk to your surgeon and/or support staff at hospital. It can be caused by gas but can also be an indication of something else....No need for alarm but better safe than sorry, right? I'd call tomorrow. Good luck and let us know how you're doing. -
....that is the question. Should I :speechles ? I'm being banded August 16 (yay!). I'm torn over whether or not to tell anyone. We're a very social couple and eat out with friends....they're certainly going to notice that we haven't invited them to dinner, or if we do, that I'm only drinking mine (and not the usual 18 gallons of wine, lol). They'll certainly notice that I haven't accepted any invitations, or if I do....that I bring pureed food. I have no problem abstaining from entertaining and being entertained for two months or so, until I can eat normal healthy food again but I don't want to offend anyone or keep putting them off. Certainly people will know that I'm losing. Am I to just tell them that I am eating smaller portions (ha ha)? I hate to lie but I just don't want to spend hours talking about it, you know? Tell me your experiences. Don't ask don't tell or tell all?

Hi everyone....I had to come back to this thread and re-read it. I can't tell you how grateful I am for all your comments. It has really helped me with my decision about who to tell, what to tell, when to tell, how much to tell...well, you get the picture. Thanks and thanks again,

Me too, Me too! I'm having surgery August 16 and suddenly in the last two days I can't stop eating! I had my pre-op nutriton consult on Wednesday and had lost 7 pounds. (I need to lose 13 before surgery or "no go" ). I must have gotten over-confident when the nutritionist said that I'd have no problem losing the rest in the two weeks liquid diet prior to surgery. That's all I needed to hear - I've been an eating machine ever since. It's made me quite despondent. I'm scared to death now that I've gained all the weight back and that they won't let me have the surgery. Isn't that silly? I think I came to this board just in time to pull myself up. Whoa Nellie!

You all are just great. I can't tell you how this has been weighing (why does that word keep coming up?) on my mind. That, in and of itself, should tell me something. At any rate, if I were younger, if I hadn't tried to lose weight and failed publicly so many times, I think I'd tell the world. But all your experiences are vastly different and my inclination at this moment is not to tell unless someone comes up to me, looks me in the eye and says...."ok....spill the Beans, kiddo". For the six weeks I'm on liquid, I'll let people think I'm on a "doctor directed liquid diet". Clearly I'm overweight (nice way of putting it, don't you think?), so that will be fine for them. As time progresses and I'm back to regular foods, I'm sure people won't even notice that I'm not eating everything on the table, as usual. People are amazing that way. You think they notice everything and actually, they see very little of what you're doing. It was only the six to eight weeks of liquid and mush that I was worrying about. We have MANY visitors coming to visit my entire pre-op time. This means nights out, dinners at home, blah blah blah (I told you we were social)...so this means I have to fess up to being on a liquid diet, for sure. I can do this. Thank you thank you thank you and keep the opinions coming. I love to hear your telling experiences.

Thanks for all your responses....and especially for the link, Yoda. After reading the link and all of the responses, it seems to be running 5-1 against telling. Anyone else want to weigh in on this (no pun intended)? My inclination is to tell - but then...if it doesn't "work" or I feel people are watching....I'll just freak out, I know it. I'd love to hear some more telling experiences.

Yay! You're on your way! (hey, that rhymes)

Hi Moon, Because I am self-pay, I got a date pretty quickly (two months). I've heard good things about Humana. Good Luck with it.

August 15!!!! Dr. Alan Bradshaw - Mission Hospital, Asheville, NC I am so excited. And thrilled to find a group doing the band at the same timd as me. We can go through the strain of losing the weight for surgery together. I have about 10 pounds to go but I figure with the two weeks liquid diet before surgery, it should be do-able. Wouldn't it be horrible to get in there and weigh a pound more and then be denied your surgery date?!? We can do this. Yay. Lyn

When I went in for my information session at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC....they had a sensational interview with Ms. Wilson from Heart. She spoke so eloquently about the surgery, it was one of the reasons I decided to go ahead with the procedure. She said that it isn't a complete solution but rather more a "tool" to use in the weight loss. I thought that was a pretty good description. She said that after the surgery the work continues. I'm really sad to hear that she's had the band removed (25% of people do), but since we haven't seen much of her lately, I figured something like that may have happened. *sigh* BUT.....her talent and music live on forever. I wish her well. Lyn

Trizzy.... I'm getting banded in August, too....and we'll both make a date next summer to ride Roller Coasters, Ferris Wheels and any darn thing we want at the amusement parks of our choice. We won't be afraid of booths in restaurants, seats in planes and rickety chairs. You're doing what you need to do. Good luck! Lyn

Surgery Scheduled in North Carolina
Diva Girl replied to Diva Girl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Kathy and Mvpo, Greetings from the mountains where today it's 80 degrees and sunny. Pretty warm for up here. Thanks for the welcome. This is a great forum and I'm looking forward to getting "into it". Kathy....I don't know your friend Bosco....but to show you that I am in fact my age....I do remember the drink, Bosco! Remember the jingle? "I love Bosco...it's full of Vitamin c......mommy puts it in my milk....." oooops...I can't remember the last line. Anyway, thanks again for the welcome. Lyn -
After viewing this site and all the people in volved in it, I'm starting to honestly think that this is going to happen. My goals for this week are: Lose 2 pounds :Dancing_biggrin: Take my measurements  Do a "before" picture

Hi Everyone... I just found this web site and forum today. Wow...this a great find this is! And then to find North Carolinians is an even bigger bonus. I just posted everything about me on the Introductions Forum but I'll kind of sum it up here: I'm 59 years old and have Lap Band scheduled for 8/15/06. Yay. I'm getting it done by Dr. Bradshaw at Mission. Like many of you, I have BCBS of NC and they won't pay, so I have to. The good news is that the surgery is scheduled pretty quickly...the bad news is that I have to lose the pre-op weight pronto. I look forward to getting to know you all. Lyn
