My daughter had Lap-Band surgery in February of 2008. So she was sort of the guinea pig. She had great success. So I started my process in October of 2008 with having sleep studies to confirm sleep apnea. My primary care physician was also a jewel and was very supportive. I was borderline on being qualified as an under 40 BMI candidate. I had all the comorbidities...sleep apnea, high BP. high cholesterol, thyroid issue and had lost and gained the same 50 lbs a gazillion times until it had become close to 90 lbs.
Surgery was 6/1/09. The six month approval process was no walk in the park. If I'd had the money I would have went down to my daughter's surgeon in Houston and just paid the cash and got it done much sooner than six months. My last fill was in September to 7ccs (Realize Band) and I will say I'm struggling with this fill and have been for three months...thinking I can make it work, but it's too tight. But when asked by surgeon if I would do it again.....ABSOLUTELY IN A HEART BEAT. Weight loss should be more but I'm horrible at not exercising and because band is too tight, my food choices are not the best. But BP and cholesteral are all within normal limits. I'm still on meds but half as much as before. My daughter has also lost 100 lbs and already had reconstructive surgery. I won't have to do that. I would recommend the procedure to anyone considering this option. I will say that you still have to work at it. It's not like it just happens. You still have to diet and still watch what you eat. I'm within 30 lbs of goal, but I've given myself a year. So I'm thrilled at results and feel that I'm on track with my goals. But I am having to really motivate myself to do the exercising to help with some of the loose skin (not much but would definitely firm up with working out.) It really has been life-changing for both my daughter and myself. Just the fact that life does not revolve around food any longer is a miracle in itself!!
