    The "F" word

I hated geriatrics in school, would have never gone into nursing if I had to do that. It's just so different. Glad you like you're job! Sorry your week has sucked. I'm charge nurse and we've had lots of call offs lately...must be that time of the year.

    Sleep Apnea test?

I did it twice, once regular and the second one with the machine hooked up. With a lower BMI, I was nervous that I wouldn't meet insurance requirements so that why I chose to do it. It was honestly the worst sleep I've ever had and hope to never do it again. You're in a foreign place, you know people are watching you...blah. The first one wasn't too bad, but when I had to use the cpap machine, I slept for maybe 4 hours and then just woke up because I could NOT get used to it, and it was even the "less invasive" one that goes on just the nose area. Buuut I'm glad to have done it because who knows if I would have got approved without it?

Peds or adults? I never had the pleasure of a nursing home and hope I never do!! The thought of taking care of adults in general turns me off

yep! I work 12 hour nights only though. At least you got some good OT! We're so focused on "budget" right now so who cares about patient safety, no OT for us!

    The "F" word

Ok glad I'm not the only one!! I think maybe it's because when people say that, they think they are being nice by wording it that way and it pisses me off. P.S. are you a night shift nurse too?

    The "F" word

As usual, I agree with RM. For me it's not the word itself but the intent. I AM fat, no point in sugar coating that one. Just don't be mean about it. The one I hate the most is "big girl" because it seems like such a derogative concept to me...not sure if it's the big or the reference to me being a girl versus woman, not sure but it definitely rubs me the wrong way!! But it's the truth at the same time so I can't hate it too much lol

How many carbs is to many carbs a day?

I've been watching my carbs just because I know this was a big problem area for me - simple, starchy carbs - so my nutritionist recommended keeping it under 60gms a day, and that has definitely been do-able without feeling like I'm depriving myself.

What's your take or opinion on........

I agree with RM and violinist...not only is it not doing what you think it's doing because you're body is still taking in all the carbs and calories etc of that meal, but this is just not a normal or safe thing to do. Please speak with your surgeon about this. Good luck to you
  12. Things are good here, how about you? I get my first fill tomorrow and am ready to advance to a regular diet and crunch on some raw veggies!

  13. Glad to hear you're doing well! I'm nervous for my first fill tomorrow but excited too, I'll let you know. Ready to eat some veggies!

    Yes I Can

Good for you!!! I know exactly how you feel, especially when going out with friends. What's worse than the men just ignoring you, is when they try to buddy-up with you so they can get in with my friend.

    Pay it forward clothing exchange

Ok I remembered how to get to the group that was already created... Go to the "community" tab at the top of the page and select "social groups." Search for "clothing" and the group The Clothing X-Change will pop up. With more people joining the group, hopefully it will be more active!

I fell off the wagon and broke my neck!!!!

I find that when I deprive myself of one particular food, the craving reaches the point where I go way overboard, i.e. eating a quart of ice cream. So what has helped me in the past is allowing myself a smaller amount of icecream, maybe 1/2 - 1 cup, every now and then to satisfy that craving. Then I don't get the urge to go hold the ice cream store hostage. Good luck to you!
  17. Part of the reason, particularly after abdominal surgery, is because the surgery can result in shallow breathing for a few days, retention of mucus in the airway, and not coughing or not coughing deeply enough to clear that mucus. The mucus then just sits around looking to cause trouble. That's why it's encouraged and so important to walk around to loosen things up and get your lungs moving, and to either use the incentive spirometer they gave you and/or do deep breathing and coughing exercises. Also staying hydrated.

Approved for Solids at 1 week post op

Every doc has a different routine and preference when it comes to the post-op diet. Many had to do liquids for 2 weeks, while I only had to do it for 24 hours and then had to be on pureed food for 1.5 weeks. After that, I did soft foods for 2 weeks which including almost anything except things like red meat, raw veggies, etc, and then I was able to eat a regular diet. Like your doctor said, I would start off slow and begin with easier digested foods so your stomach doesn't work too hard. Good luck!

    Pay it forward clothing exchange

First Donna let me say that I'm jealous of your beach adventures...I'd die to be on the beach right now :wink2: I think it's an awesome idea. There is a group on here that is a clothing exchange group, but I don't believe it's too active. My doc's office also offers one at support meetings too. Get it rolling!

It generally a 30-45 minute procedure. My start time was 730 and I was home by 930

    Who measures food?

3-4 tablespoons is equal to about 1.5-2 ounces, or 1/4 cup. That's great that it's working for you. I'm sure after a while you'll know what 4 tablespoons look like just by looking at the plate!

    Pain where band is!!!

As always, I would check with your doctor with a concern like this. Could be something serious or could be nothing.

Eww can you imagine PB'ing a raw owster? Grossness lol I'd also check with your surgeon just to make sure.

    Confused

I would agree with HH to an extent. Obviously you need to feel comfortable with your decision and make sure it's YOUR decision and not entirely based on the opinion of others, but do your research. Ask why your surgeon feels he would recommend the bypass over the band. As previously stated, they are 2 entirely different surgeries and work in 2 entirely different ways. You need to look at your own eating habits and try to figure out what your "problem" is that has got you to the point that you are. For me, it was not about choosing the right foods or eating a lot of junk or sugary foods, I had a hard time with portion control. After over a year of research on my own, talking with different health care professionals as well as patients, I decided that the lapband fit my needs. You need to do the same as well.

    Day OF and AFTER surgery?

I felt amazing the first day. My surgery start time was at 730am and I was at home by 10am. I took a 2 hour nap, and then was up walking all over the house, invitied family over to visit, watched movies and played cards with my mom, etc. Day 2 and 3 werent' as great as that, but they weren't bad either. As others have mentioned, I wasn't in pain, just more of a general soreness/discomfort as if I did a million situps - I was able to stop taking the narcotic pain meds within 48 hours after surgery. My biggest problem was severe Co2 gas pain that was bugging my left shoulder, this took about 5 days to go away. I was not very hungry on day 1. Day 2 I wasn't hungry but ready to eat, as well as day 3 so everything tasted good. After that I was ready for some real food but couldn't have it! Right now I can comfortably say that I would do it all again. I'm so happy with the changes that I've seen thus far, not just physically but mentally too. I'm excited to meet the challenges ahead.
