MAY 2009 Bandsters - shout out!!!
dhall111 replied to ibelieve's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Home from being banded yesterday. So far so good. Not much pain, a little when standing or sitting. A little gas in my chest too but overall not bad at all. Much less than I expected. I lost 10.5 pounds on my pre-op diet. Have no idea what I weigh today, not really interested in finding out right now. :crying: Not really hungry at all, but I know I need to get the Protein in me. I'll sip on my Boost Realize protein clear liquid drink the rest of the night I guess. I was banded by Dr. Kasemsap at Wuesthoff in Melbourne. Great doc, really personable and easy to talk with. And his primary nurse, Mara, is a sweetie. The nurses at Wuesthoff were also amazing, everyone I've met on this journey has been great. Debbie Hall Talk to you all later, -

I tried many of them and couldn't stand any that I tried including EAS, Ensure, Slim Fast, Adkins, none of them. My nutritionist gave me a chocolate Boost to try. It sat in my fridge for 3 weeks (this was about a month 1/2 before surgery). I was sure I'd hate it. Finally I tried it. I LOVE Boost! It has by far the best taste I've found. I love the chocolate best, but vanilla is good too. I haven't tried strawberry because I'm not a big strawberry person except for fresh berries. And they have butter pecan which I tried, it was ok, but a little sweet for me. The regular Boost have 10 g Protein. They have high protein Boost too with 15 g protein. I can't taste any difference between the two types.

For anyone on full liquids, I made a great soup tonight--here's the recipe
dhall111 replied to rtm's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That sounds great, I'll give it a try. I found the V8 soups are wonderful. I add a can of cheddar cheese soup to a box of V8 each night (different variety every night) and then I have plenty left for lunch the next day. -
ate something not approved

Speaking of puking . . . do you have time to get to a bathroom before you actually puke? -
MAY 2009 Bandsters - shout out!!!

My date is this coming Tuesday. I've been on liquids since last Monday. Lost 10.5 pounds but then put 2 back on. Weird. I can have cream Soups, broth, Jello, pudding, popsicles, fudgsicles, italian ice. And at least 3 Protein drinks a day. I've been drinking Boost and LOVE them. They're really good. I haven't really been hungry at all. I didn't have any calorie or fat or carb restrictions. They recommended fat free or sugar free but not required. I just can't have any chunks. So if I want chicken noodle Soup I can have it, but have to strain all the "stuff" out of it. I've been living on the V8 soups, they are really good! I mix a can of cheddar cheese soup with them and get two meals out of it. Butternut Squash is my favorite. Sometimes they're a little thick and have a bit of stuff in them so I strain them. Anyhow, I hadn't even thought about any real pain after surgery. I had my gallbladder out about 15 years ago and I was in college the next day taking a test. I was hoping this would be similar. -
May 26 for me!

Hi all, My surgery is Tuesday but of course I'm already thinking about a year from now. Is there anything I can do now to help minimize any saggy skin problems? Like extra moisturizer? Or daily exfoliating? I know this sounds like a vain question, but that's been a concern of mine since I first started seriously thinking about major weight loss.

I'm following my doc's pre-op diet - full liquids which includes Clear Liquids and Soups with no chunks (creamy), frozen yogurt, popsicles, yogurt, etc. This is a 2 week diet, I'm on day 6. And I see that other people are on clear liquids only for 1-2 days. And some that are on liquids for a full week. And some are on low carb - so they can eat meat and stuff, just no sugars/carbs. And some that really don't have much of a diet at all. I'm not having any problems on my diet though I wonder why all the different types of diets? I know that all docs are different, but for most other medical issues there are general guidelines. To me it seems really weird that clear liquids, full liquids, and no carb diets can all have the same effect.

See, that's what I mean. If the purpose of these pre-op diets is to shrink the liver, what is it specifically that causes the liver to shrink? Is it no carbs? No fats? No food? It just seems to me that there should be at least some kind of standard. Like, if you are diabetic you don't eat a lot of sugar. That's a given, firm, set rule for the most part. So if the goal is to shrink the liver, what actually shrinks the liver? It sounds to me like everything shrinks the liver regardless of what kind of diet it is. I AM NOT COMPLAINING about my own pre-op diet, so please don't misunderstand my post, I'm just really curious as to why so many different kinds. Sure, I can understand some docs prescribing some people one type of diet and others a different diet based on those specific people's needs. But this doesn't seem to be the norm. It seems like a doc has one preferred diet, for whatever reason they like that one diet, and that's the one that all their patients follow (with some exceptions I'm sure). I'm doing very well on my pre-op diet - I think. I've lost 9.5 pounds in 7 days. One more week to go. But I have been wondering, if I'm doing this liquid diet that includes yogurt, frozen yogurt, Jello, pudding, etc., will my liver really shrink??? Especially when I hear about other pre-op diets that are much more restrictive. Would doing just clear liquids be better? And then there are those doing no carb diets and are eating bacon and steaks. And their diet is supposed to shrink the liver too??? It's just very confusing to me.

Help with Protein shakes
dhall111 replied to rmanns00's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nutritionist recommended Boost. I think they taste great. The chocolate is my favorite, tastes a LOT like a chocolate milk shake. It doesn't smell as strong as some others but I don't try to smell it either because it does have a vitamin-y smell to it. -
Staples??? My surgery is next week and no one said anything to me about staples. :scared2: I have had staples before and have not had any good experiences. They had to restitch every time because removing the staples tore me up.

start 2 week pre-op diet tomorrow
dhall111 replied to dhall111's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish I was on the Atkins induction phase! Oh, to be able to chew something!!! Liquids for 2 weeks is already driving me crazy. Basically everything is sweet except for chicken broth. It's all yogurt, frozen yogurt, Jello, pudding, popsicles, etc. Broth is the only real soup unless I want to strain it. I don't care for tomato, tried it today but couldn't even get half a bowl down. Guess if I get hungry enough it may start to look better. I am determined to stick to the diet though and not cheat. Anyone else doing actual liquids? What about cheese soup? Campbells makes a cheddar cheese soup. I'm wondering if I can mix some of that with the tomato or broth to add some flavor. -
I'm new here. I'm being banded May 26th (day after Memorial day). I start my liquid diet tomorrow for the 2 weeks pre-surgery. My doc hasn't done a lot of bands but has done 200 or so bypasses. Dr. Kasemsap in Melbourne, FL. I really like him though and feel very comfortable with him. I'm somewhere near 290 now. I can't believe I even wrote that number. It just doesn't seem I could have gotten to 290. I've always been heavy, but 290 is scary heavy to me. I'm 43. I've always been able to change my weight 5+ pounds in the space of a couple/three days. Weigh me on Monday and I could be 280. Weigh me on Wednesday and I could be 286. I'm scared and excited at the same time, seems to be normal from all I've read. I'm not scared of the surgery, that's the easy part. I'm more scared that this is kind of my last chance so if it doesn't work, then what? How much of a loser would I be if this doesn't work (pun intended)?
