Dr. Terry Simpson - Banded by Dr. Simpson
Vinca replied to Mariposa2009's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi April, hope everything went well with the surgery! Let us know how things went. take care. Sonya -
[/bOk heres a fantastic recipe that a co--worker used when I was in San Diego in 2004, she was the docs sister and she was in the best shape flat stomach, she was always doing this soup diet after Holidays and when she would put on 5 pounds, this is how she kept her weight down, she had gotten this from Womans day magazine it is a diet created by Dr. Mary Dan Eades and let me tell you its the best tasting diet food i've ever had, I had lost it in the move but just found it and I will be sharing it here on this site and everyone doing lapband, whether you do the diet for the week like my friend did, or just have it anytime it will definitly become a favorite for the whole family. It is extremely low carb and protein rich. I have the old printout of the recipe from the magazine but I looked it up online and found it!!! Guess what? Theres more of her recipies in there! This is perfect for us Banders!! Ok here it is, go to Proteinpower.com there is even a link to go to the actual Womans Day magazine article. Please let me know how it works for you. Goodluck and enjoy! Protein Power Soup Diet Soup Makes 4 servings. It’s so quick to make, you may want to whip up a couple of batches at once to last several days. Freeze portions in zip freezer bags or freezer containers if you need to keep it longer. 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 clove garlic, diced fine 1/2 small yellow onion, diced small 1 small carrot, diced 2 ribs celery, diced 1 medium (or 2 small) zucchini squash*, diced 1 can (about 14 ounces) diced tomatoes with seasoning (basil/onion, onion/garlic, Italian seasoning, etc) 1 quart chicken broth (with salt and spices if available, if not, add the following: 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon dried basil, 1/4 teaspoon onion powder) 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken tenders, cut into 1/2″ chunks, sprinkled with salt and pepper. 1-2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro or parsley (optional) 1. In a soup pot, sauté onion in olive oil over medium heat. After about a minute add the garlic and continue cooking until they are both translucent. 2. Add the chicken and sauté until opaque. 3. Add the carrot, celery, and zucchini and sauté until slightly softened (about 5 minutes) stirring them often to prevent burning. 4. Add the tomatoes, with their juice, and the broth. 5. Bring to a boil, then turn down and simmer until all vegetables are tender. 6. At serving time, if desired, add a tablespoon or two of chopped fresh cilantro or parsley to brighten the flavor. Protein per serving = 27.5 grams Effective Carb per serving = 14 grams Calories per serving = 345 *Note: This version calls for zucchini, but you could just as easily substitute a cup of broccoli or cauliflower or yellow summer squash or a mixture of all three veggies or a big double handful of fresh spinach leaves for about the same carb cost. I usually use whatever veggies I have the most of on hand or that I need to use up because we’re heading out of town. It’s all delicious and nutritious!

Beware of Fill Center USA Albuquerque
Vinca replied to SullivanFarm's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi, do you know the name of the Dr? My sis is about to get the band in El Paso and they do the fills in Albuquerque thats where she is, she told me there are no places to get banded there. -
Hello there, well please keep in mind that everyone is different, I was hungry after my surgery, but liquids went down just fine. I wish I had taken some sugarfree hard candy and or some mints, mouth is superdry after surgery, the nurse gave me some of her altoids, and I had cherry cough drops in my purse which I was thankful for. maybe buy some sugar free Jolly ranchers or peppermint wheels, lifesavers. The band works with solid foods , thats why you drink your drink first, then have your meats, then your veggies then carbs, the ehavy stuff first, you want it to stay in the small pouch as long as possible, if you drink you flush it out and you get hungry too fast. So needless to say when youre on a liquid diet you get hungry. Just have the broth and jello and tea whenever you want it thats what I did. Dont expect weight loss the first months but if you do(people usually do) then great. Trust me when I tell you after your first fill you will get full much faster and you will start to lose slowly but everyday. I just had my first fill last Monday. Some people like gas-x after surgery for the gas, I used the chewable vanilla mint. have plenty of pillows to prop yourself up when sleeping. it took me a while before I could lie on my side. In the mornings the band is tighter, so it feels wierd under your ribs. When I got my first fill, a couple of hours later I had a nagging pain under left rib. It went away and i think its just gas from the fill. Ok here is a recipie you will LOVE, when on liquid diet just strain it and drink after youre on solids you will love this even more. Its also cheaper and you can freeze more use later, also its good for the whole family so they can eat the chicken and veggies while youre on liquids maybe just add extra broth, i have it on a blog under Vinca, but here it is.... Goodluck and keep in touch.Ok heres a fantastic recipe that a co--worker used when I was in San Diego in 2004, she was the docs sister and she was in the best shape flat stomach, she was always doing this soup diet after Holidays and when she would put on 5 pounds, this is how she kept her weight down, she had gotten this from Womans day magazine it is a diet created by Dr. Good luck you guys on the 9th, take some sugarfree mints with you, your mouth is so dry after surgery the nurse gave me some of her altoids, i had some cough drops in my purse and it helped , so maybe sugarfree candy like jolly ranchers or lifesavors? I wouldve killed for some when i was in the hospital. Gas -x works for some people so have some , i like the chewables minty vanilla. have plenty of sugarfree jello at home, i hate the hunts brand, and broth is gross i liked the cambells or any soup just drain it. Sugarfree popsicles are great! Tea. and walk as much as possible, take care!!! Nothing to worry about. -
Dr. Terry Simpson - Banded by Dr. Simpson
Vinca replied to Mariposa2009's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi Mari, no I was 228 at my consult after surgery I lost 7.5 pounds during the first month I gained a couple but after the fill last Monday I have lost them back and then some, I think i'm just under 220 like 218 , I may have put the wrong number on my post it was very late last night. I don't compare to others and I didnt do pre op diet so i'm going slow. The first month is not to lose weight, don't obsess over it, plus keep in mind sometimes you lose in inches but you dont see it on the scale, I fit so much better into my pants that I could barely tolerate before. I think you should probably not weigh in everyday, try once a week or even til you get a fill, I didnt buy a scale til after the first fill. Trust me you will lose after the first fill, but I think i'll need one more at least, til I get to my green zone. The scale at Dr. S office is probably more accurate, mine is a couple of pounds off because I weighed myself at home after they weigh me at the office. Part of the reason you're not losing is because you need a fill, sounds like you're doing way better than I was with my diet, he says I am eating too fast so just try to take 20 to 30 minutes to eat, what i'm going to start trying is maybe have a couple of bites then go and do something like wash some dishes start cleaning the kitchen and then come take another bite or two and so one , what i'm finding out and I hear alot of people say is that it takes a while to feel the fullness so you tend to eat more than you need to feel satisfied to by the time it kicks in you feel way too full and the point is to not get feel full , but satisfied. He said to get used to leaving food on your plate. well I can eat bread or tortillas fine, I have a wheat toast for breakfast if i dont have time for anything else, I try to change it up, I like and egg with a couple bacon strips, or i'll make scrambled eggs , i sautee some of those frozen peppers and onion mix they sell in frozen section, and add bacon bits for flavor and eggs and tp it with cheese. bacon is pretty good if you make it in the microwave. all the fat comes off. I dont know if youve ever done it but in case just get a plate and put down like three paper towels and add your bacon slices then add another three towels over them , for each slice is usually a minute sometimes if the bacon is thin I do a minute less cause it will get really cooked and hard to chew, so it depends on your micro. I do it alot during the week before work it gets me through the morning. And yes they say not to snack between, I dont get that. Its easy for me not to snack when im at work i dont have time to think about it, but on the weekends i do. A good thing about having had the surgery now is summertime fruits and veggies are cheaper! Another thing I do for anytime, quaker microwave oatmeal, they have a weight control on ( i got banana bread) and lower sugar with lots of good flavors. Also I saw on the lapband.com website that you can have regular corn flakes like the kellogs. Go to lapband.com the site is informative , alot you already know but I found stuff i didnt . They also have a cool way to keep track of your progress and write down goals . At work I have always had smart ones or healthy choice meals, lately I ahve not been eating the whole thing, of course eat the meat first then the veggies and then desert. very filling. Its hard for me not to drink but I am just drinking a glass before i eat . I really need to excercise that is hard for me to do, I walk some thats about it. Send me a private message and ill send you my email, i go for a while without coming on the site. Ok well i will talk to you later and keep doing what youre doing. -

Hi Mari, yes I was in the morning like maybe by ten or ten thirty, I was supposed to be there at 8:00 checked in and then went in and did the bloodwork and IV, seemed to take forever but everyone was nice so it was fine. It was kinda wierd when I went into the room and theres men patients in there and the nurse tells you to get undressed , felt wierd. Anyway, I love the tea and the broth they give you. What room were you in? I was on the right hand like on the side of the nurse station, not the one right next to it but the second. I'm sure I looked horrid. I wasntdoing so good and he was not too happy cause he knew I was eating too much and too fast, so i got a fill and its so much better, i'm losing slowly everyday now and therefore I'm more motivated and eating better, that is what I was counting on and it is working. Ok well I will talk to you later. Take care. -
Dr. Terry Simpson - Banded by Dr. Simpson
Vinca replied to Mariposa2009's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi Everyone, I was banded by Dr. Simpson on april 21st, stayed the night just because I chose to, I live in Buckeye. I'm really gonna try to make myself go to the next meeting, I think it will help and motivate. I have been emailing with a woman I met here and she's in Mesa, she went to the first meeting and said it was well worth it, Dr. Simpson was actually there. I didn't do a pre-op diet and it has taken me a while to change my habits so a week at my post op appt I had lost 7.5 pounds which I gained back a couple but after my fill on the first of June, it has helped a great deal! You see , he does a small fill when he does the surgery and when I drove myself to the post op appt the car ride was too long for me and I was in alot of pain so he did an unfill so I started eating more and more and pretty much anything, like a kid testing how much I could get away with, Well june 1st (everytime you go for an appt you have to fill out a questionaire) so he knows what's going on by reading that, he said i'm eating too fast. Of course I was also drinking, so i'm sure I was flushing the food down faster. Anyhow, now i'm doing good, and it seems i'm losing weight everyday.I get satisfied alot quiker. That is motivating. I have to weigh myself today but I have already lost what I had gained and I am certain it's going to keep going down! hang on and things will get better once you get your fills. The thing with me is when I got the fill then I went to work and after about an hour I started to get the discomfort like a sharp pain up my rib on left side and I just kept hoping it would go away cause it started to be too much I was glad I was almost done with work, I took a couple of motrin and a while after I got home it just went away so it lasted like four hours maybe. I have to call and ask Greg(receptionist) if that is normal. Greg said it took him 3 fills before he started to see results. O.k. Guys I will keep in touch! It's great to find people that were banded recently by my Doctor! -

I use "All The Whey", Chocolate mousse, I blend it with ice and slim milk, it tastes like a shake. I like the fact that the price is right , check it out, it was like 2.5 pounds for like 30.00. they have tons of flavors, I didn't like orange, the good thing is I bought a sample package that comes with like 8 flavors and so you don't have to waste money on a big container, you try them and if you like it you buy the big one. Also you can sprinkle it or add some to yogurts, puddings or anything. -

Banded on 21st in PhoenixAZ, lost 7.5 pounds. If anyone needs a fantastic Doctor Dr. Simpson is the best also just for anyone check out his website it has a wealth of information for everyone even if your using a different Dr. I download his podcasts to my ipod its awsome. He is one of Phoenix Top Doctors 2009. He is co-owner of the privtae hospital next to his office where I stayed it was great everything and the whole staff were the best. The only Dr. that teaches in the State and he has taught in many states. website is Dr. Simpson.net
-
:thumbup:Woo Hoo u go Marcy! I'm glad you liked him, he is just very softspoken and old fashioned, but he has a sense of humor. Did you tell him about me? Have you gone to his website Dr.Simpson.net , he has like 5 or 6 but it's the one with the apples, it has so much info, and also video of the hospital and I really liked his pod casts i loaded them on my ipod and theyre good, i cant wait for first fill cause I have no restriction and im eating too much i think. Well im happy for you , ill be looking out for you.
-
Hi guys, yeah I hear that about the first fill , I don't have much restriction , when he did my surgery he filled a bit but it was too much to start , he unfilled when i went back in a week. I did not get shoulder pain but got alot of that under the rib or breast pain and if I went on a car ride for too long , like when i went to my week appt, man I was in so much pain i couldnt sit down in the waiting room, the office is like 45 minutes from my house, well on the way back I dont even know how I made it home, the pain was so bad I thought I was gonna have to call an ambulance, I walked around a bit then I started these long loud burps, and I got relief. Did everyone get staples?? I got liquid bandage which was great and it stays on through showers and everything, i got banded on the 21st april and I still have it, its like your own skin almost. I am drinking a protein shake for breakfast , I got this huge can of Bariatric shakes from "all the whey.com" for 30.00 the chocolate mouse is awsome, just 8 oz skim milk or water and i add some ice and blend. But i think im eating too much though , i need a fill. When you get your fills, know that the band is tighter in the morning, its a strange feeling. Goodluck everyone.
-
Hi there Marcy, let me know how it goes tomorrow, i'm excited for you!
-
Hi Marcy, well i'm not selfpay, my insurance covered everything. Really the time til surgery depends on you nd the insurance or if you're self pay then it's up to when you want to do it really, of course as long as you're a good candidate. I have been procrastinating for at least a year, I had a patient at work who was having it done and she gave me her Doctors name and number I had a consult and I di'nt get a good feeling, the visit was very rushed and he just seemed very tired and just said he can do it and I asked what would happen after I lost the weight and he said he would remove the band. I was supposed to go to a seminar at Good Sam but when I called (after 2 months) they said he didnt work out of there anymore. Anyway, i got a referal from my Dr. and they gave me Dr. Simpson and I feel very lucky. I did a search here on this site for him and there was a couple of old thread from a couple yrs back and they said that he;s ok but he has a wierd sense of humor and that youll see him for the surgery and for a couple of fillings and then his staff will take over the fillings so the person changed to another Dr. Anyway, heres the scoop, you have to know that Dr. Simpson is an old fashioned Doctor, he's a bit quiet but he will ask if you have any questions and he will answer them. If you have any questions or concerns email him cause he always has his blackberry and he will answer your email. If its urgent he will answer it asap. I understand why he would have his nurses do fills, he does this surgery everyday. I know he does at least 6 or 7 a day just at Southwest Surgical and the nurses told me he works out of a couple of other hospitals. I had no idea they did so many, anywa they get you in quik providing that you are qualified, he has a couple of finance places if you're self pay. Also I read about this guys wife that had surgery with him and was sick in the hospital with complications, the more I am finding out is that when theres complications its usually due to the persons not following the rules. Once I got my letter of referal from my Physician for the insurance and faxed it to Dr. S on a Thursday they called me on Monday or Tuesday and said im approved and gave me some dated within three weeks. Everyone was supernice at the hospital and everyhting was pretty easy compared to other stories I hear. Just get undressed and into a gown, get vitals and he likes his bloodwork "hot off the press" as they told me, so they get that they have a lab there, then get you IV wheel you into the op rm and jump on a table and get a mask on , thats all I remember til I woke up and they gave me some warm blankets and hot tea, which I hear other people dont get, lol. The Broth they serve is actually very good, everybody raves about it. Youll get Broth, jello, water, and crystal lite for all meals. Of course most people do go home same day so thats up to you or him. The only thing to remember is to walk as much as you can they want you to walk 10 min every hour. I shouldve walked more but I enjoyed my room, I did try though. As far as pain , its more soreness type, the gas is the worst thing , youll find that you get the pain under your ribs or up the shoulder(i didnt get the shoulder)the best thing is walk and burp instant relief.I think im talking too much here. I got bad gas pain under rib in car rides. Also he does a small fill while in surgery and so when I went in after a week he gave me an unfill. But after talking to people here they say the band is tightest in the morning you definitly notice this. And youll want to have a bunch of nice big pillows for sleeping, im still sleeping that way and i find it strange to sleep on my side still. My BMI is 43 and so he didnt require pre-op diet, and when I went to my week appt he said I could start some solids as I could. I tolerate solids fine. I thinks its crazy other Dr.s to have people on clear liquids and soft liquids for three or more weeks. I lost 7.5 in the week,, but he said if you lose any the first week its just a bonus. I need to get a scale I have no idea where im at. He does his first fill after 4 to 6 wks. Well let me know how it goes and goodluck. Sonya

Hi Gordita, hey I know its tuff i just got banded this month and my problem is not being able to eat the bread an tortillas, its killing me. Are you sure u dont need a fill? Maybe thats why are able to eat everything. I wont try beef jerky cause my doctor had a patient eat jerky(not supposed to eat dry meat like breast gets too dry sometimes, and not supposed to re heat or cook meat in microwave) well he had to do urgery to remove the jerky. I heard doritos r bad too this girl on a blog said she hadnt eaten for 4 days and culdnt eat liquids or anything down. Try going to "all the whey" website thats where i ordered bariatri shakes, i got a huge can for like 30 bucks and got chocolate mousse, 8 ouncs of skim milk and stuck some ice in it , its awsome! Dont like the orange though. its so good im gonna start having it more often . I had tried the orange and its gross then finally today tried the chocolate. Hi, I read that the soda can erode the band material in time. But I think if you have got to try it, have the fountain type with lots of ice so its a bit watered down, the canned type is too strong and alot fizzier. I'm sitting here wondering if anyone eats just a little bit of bread or tortillas, like burritos. I went to a restaurant and it sucked opening the burrito and eating just the meat, I snuck in bits of tortilla.
