  1. My wife and I are 2 and 1 months out, respectively, and we both noticed right off that, though the scale was not telling us much, our clothes are fitting in dramatically different ways. It's almost like the weight re-distributed on our bodies, causing inch loss without major weight loss. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Pushing it, I guess....

So, 1 week after surgery, I was doing lawn mowing. 2 weeks after surgery, I am weed-eating and moving stuff around in my garage. I guess maybe I pushed it a little too far, because now I have a pain in my side whenever I take a deep breath, right at the top of the inhalation. I tend to be a deep breather, probably from long-time CPAP use. I was scared I had popped a hernea or something, but the nurse said most likely I just strained a side muscle. And it is better today, so I guess I got lucky... Had my 2-week followup yesterday, and at their scale I am at 368. My own scale is driving me crazy, because it gives radically different results each time I step on it. So, using only the doctor's scales, I have lost 21 pounds since I started this, and I am 63 pounds off my all-time recorded high of 431.

  4. My Nutritionist actually told me the caffeine would erode the stomach wall where the band is and cause the band to intrude in. I told my surgeon this, and he said there has never been any clinical evidence of this. He said, like all liquids, coffee will run right past the band(assuming you are not drinking and eating at the same time), so it would not have time to mess with the banded area any more than the rest of the stomach. He also said, as long as you are drinking in moderation, the diuretic and appitite stimulant factors are minor. At that point in the conversation, I was practically jumping for joy. I work at Starbucks, after all, so Caffeine is practically required... Topher
  5. Doing good...had my 2-week followup...hard to tell how much I have lost because my home scale is...challenged....Stepped on it 3 times the other day, first said 355, second said 368, third said 372. According to the doctor's scale, I've lost about 21 pounds since I started the pre-op diet

    First Steps...

Ok, so this is my first blog entry. My wife and I are going thru this together, and for me, losing weight is more than just a should do, it's a HAVE TO do. I have been overweight as far back as I can remember, and my highest known weight is 431(when I get to my goal, I am thinking of getting a tattoo of the number 431 with a line thru it). At 35, I am so used to being heavy, that I really find it nearly impossible to picture myself lighter, which makes it harder to motivate myself. So I take my motivation from two sources: My wife and daughters, who inspire me to be healthy so I can be around as long as possible, and my family medical history, which is bleak, to put it mildly. So my wife was banded on 4-27, and I was banded on 5-8. I really have a hard time remembering that it has only been 1 week. I did the 2-week liquid diet, and at the start of that, I was at 385. According to the same scale this moring, I was 364. At first, my pain level was low, but the last few days have seemed worse. I especially hate not being able to sleep on my side. I know it's a long road still, but I'm ready to get on with it!

    Anyone Banded is Dallas, TX

My wife and I are working with the Baylor Weightloss Surgery Center in Grapevine. My wife was banded on 4-17, and my surgery is this friday. Dr Randall Wright our surgeon, and he is great. Very easy to talk to, none of the normal ego that a surgeon shows. The whole staff is very friendly, and they work to get all the insurance kinks smoothed out.
  15. My wife and I have been going thru the insurance hassle for over a year now, and now that we both have a date and hers is coming up, she is now starting to struggle with doubts and fears. So I want to know, how many people regret the banding decision? Do you wish you had done it differently? Did you find the effort and pain are not equal to the reward? Topher
  16. There's a Men's social group on here as well, just joined it, bringing membership to 5...search "Guys"
  17. Ok, so this all may have been covered before, but I'll ask anyways....I am set to be banded on 5-8, and right now I am hovering around 400. Per my BMI, I may be looking at a goal of over 200 pounds lost. So, my question is, does this mean absolute certanty that I will have hanging skin issues? Is there any way to prevent or lessen the problem as I lose the weight? Thanks in advance for the info... Topher

    Why are people so MEAN???

It's all about surrounding yourself with a support system, and not letting the negative elements get to you. My wife and I are going thru this together, but she is having her surgery on friday, while mine is 5-8. Well, I didnt want to be eating food while she is having to endure the liquid diet, so I put myself on the diet at the same time as her. It just didnt seem fair that I should be eating in front of her. I don't know why, but there seems to be a mis-conception, especially with the older generation, that bariatric surgery is the weight-loss equivalant of a get-rich-quick scheme. Luckily, we were able to bring my wife's parents around to the facts, so they are on board and supportive. Lord knows they were not at first... Topher
  19. Well, my surgery is 5-8, but I'm planning ahead. I have 2 jobs, a desk job and a starbucks barista. I'm going back to the desk job tuesday, but taking the whole week off from starbucks... Topher

    New,I have a date

My date is 5-8, but my wife's is this friday. Because of an insurance issue, she is only going to be on the diet for 1 week, but to show my support for her and to make sure I am ready, I am starting the diet now. I want to prove to her and myself that I have the willpower to do it, because she is already having problems with the diet and is getting scared about the surgery. Just remember, nothing worth having comes easy. The harder the proccess is, the more you will appreciate the result! Topher
  21. I'm Scheduled for May 8th...my wife will be going first, on april 17th, just one week from now!

    Caffeine?

Ok, so I know it's been over a year since the last response on this thread. I actually got it thru google. I am set for my banding surgery on 5-8, and my wife is actually being banded a week from today. Our nutritionist has a unique stance on caffeine that I have not heard or read anywhere else. She says that the caffeine is a GI irritant, and can cause ulcers that can eventually cause the band to intrude into the stomach pouch. Has anyone else ever heard of this? I've not found anything else online about it. I work at Starbucks, so as you can imagine, coffee is VERY important to me. I drink it straight black, but I have been known to consume 32 oz of it in a day. Topher
