  1. When I was a kid I remember my Mom going on the "Grapefruit Diet". It was claimed that eating a grapefruit a day would help you lose weight. I always thought this was silly until recently. Our local FFA sells fruit as a fund raiser each year. I alway buy oranges and grapefruit. When the fruit came in about two weeks ago I literaly pigged out. I was eating about two oranges a day and about 2 grapefruit daily. I just knew I would gain weight but instead my loss increased considerably. I don't know whether it was just time for me to start a downward trend or if the citrus fruit helped. Has anyone else heard of this?

MIzboo, I have only had one fill so I don't know if that could be effecting you. The only time my port bothers me is when I exercise hard. As far as the sore throat goes, I believe getting too tired causes this. Doctors do not agree with me but it is true. My daugher was diagnosed about 6 years ago with Chronic Fatigue (most doctors don't believe in this either). I have never been diagnosed but I believe I have it also. She and I both do the same thing. If we get really tired and do not rest our throat gets sore. If we still do not rest, our glands in our necks will swell. Resting will make them go back down. I know this is not very scientific and I am not suggesting that you have Chronic Fatigue, but you might watch and see if fatique might be a factor. If fatigue is a factor you may not be taking in enough good calories. I have to really watch my calorie intake. I become dizzy headed and get headaches if I do not eat enough or drink enough Water. Have you noticed if colder weather effects you pbs? I went camping in the mountains and could not keep hardly anything down. I had to make sure everything I ate was hot and soft. With only one fill you would think I would not have much of a problem with PB's but whenever a cold front comes through everything gets stuck in my throat and comes back up. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! I am so excited for you. The next few months will be the most trying and the most rewarding of your life. I have lost a total of 93 lbs since May 15, 2006 (the day I started my liquid diet). I feel better than I ever remember feeling and no longer take any pain medicine or anti-depressants. My advise: *get yourself a journal and log every bite you put in your mouth. Eating too little will slow your weight loss the same as eating too much. *don't depend on the band to do the work for you. You still have to be on a very strict diet. The difference now is you won't be hungry. Just remember when you want to eat sweets that this will not last forever and that feeling good and looking good is much sweeter than any food will ever be. *don't get discouraged when you stop losing. I have noticed that when the weight stops, I start going down in sizes. (When I started I wore a 24 jean. I bought a pair of 14's last week) *don't get upset when people do not notice your weight loss. This would upset me terribly. No one noticed until I was over 50lbs lost. You will be slimming down but people are just too wrapped up in their own lives to notice. I now have people do a double take and some don't even recognize me. I don't mean to sound bossy. I am just so thrilled with my surgery and I want everyone to feel as good as I do. I don't want you to fall into some of the pitfalls that I did. Feel free to contact me anytime. I did not find this forum until about two weeks after my surgery. I had so many questions that they answered. The people here are some of the nicest i have ever encountered. Good luck and may God be with you.

I must be very fortunate. I have had a steady loss. I weigh every morning. I take in from 600 to 900 calories a day. I was exercising regurally, but I recently went back to work and don't always have time now. My failure to exercise has slowed down my weight loss but not caused me to gain. I keep expecting my losing to stop but so far so good. Right now I weigh 204 (loss of 90 lbs,) My christmas goal is to be under 200. It has been over 25 years since I have been. Question??? I am not near as strong as I use to be. Since I have been lifting weights I thought I would get stronger but I haven't. Is anyone else noticing a loss of strength? My husband says it is because I don't take in enough calories.

I have been out of town for the holidays so just read your post. I had surgery at Precision Surgery in June 2006 and it was the most wonderful thing I ever did. I started out at almost 300 lbs and in so much pain I could hardly get through the grocery store. Over the holidays I went on a horseback trip and rode over 10 miles friday and saturday. I got up and rode 5 miles before coming home sunday (yesterday). All with no pain medicine. Life is good again. My insurance paid for some of surgery and I financed the rest. I waited a long time to have it because of the money. I finally figured that a funeral would cost close to what the surgery would cost, and that was were I was headed. I now feel good enough to work and make the payments myself. Good luck with everything. Let me know if I can help in any way.

I read a lot on this site but I am not much on writing. I really enjoy everyone. I just had to tell everyone of my latest triumph. I have always been a horse lover. I came from a rodeo family, ran barrels as a kid and so did my kids. I have been too big for many years to enjoy horses and have not been on one in over 15 years. Well Saturday before last I got on my mare Buffy. It was as good as I remembered. Since them I have rode 4 other times. I never thought I would ever have the joy of riding again. My goal now is to be able to get on without a bucket. A tall horse, short legs and short stirrups make it real hard to get on. Some friends of mine are going to OK during Thanksgiving for a campout and trail ride. I want to go so bad, but unless I can retire the bucket I will stay home. I am working extra hard on leg exercises. Wish me luck!!!!

I hate to read that some of you are getting so discouraged. Hang in there. Pinkylee hit the nail on the head. I have had very good success so far but I have worked really hard for it. I drink nothing but water. I joined a gym and was going 3 to 5 times weekly. The past few weeks I have been unable to go and my weight loss went fromn 1/2 lb per day to 1/2 lb every 3 days. I believe that exercise is the key. I also read the lable of everything I eat. After i read it I decide do I really want it that bad. This will generally keep me from eating it. Another thing I did that helped me was using a diet diary. Log everything you eat and count those calories. You might be surprised how much you take in. I had to lose over 50 lbs before anyone noticed. Now at 68 lbs EVERYONE notices. That is a high that is better than any food. I was on anti-depressents. I dreaded waking up in the morning and it took all my energy just to get out of bed. Some days I didn't even get up. Now I look forward to each day. I wish I could help all of you that are getting discouraged. I want everyone to feel as good as I do. For the first time in many many years I am starting to enjoy life again.

  10. So far I seem to be doing real well with my weght loss and I do not drink with my meals. I couldn't if I wanted to. If I drink while I eat I end up throwing it back up. If I get real thirsty, I will sometimes put some wter in the end of my straw and put just enough in my mouth to wet it but not enough to swallow. This helps. I have lost 63 lbs since 5-15-2006. I do not get hungry until about 4 hours after I eat. I drink only Water (except 1/2 C orange juice with my Vitamins in am). I do not eat bread, sugar or fried food and I read the label of everything I eat. I have joined a gym and exercise regularly. I am taking in between 700 and 950 calories a day. I was suppose to have another fill two weeks ago but decided I didn't want it. I have had only one fill. I work real hard to eat the right things and limit my intake. I do believe that not drinking with my meals helps me control my appitite. The longer the food remains in the pouch the longer your hunger pains stay away. If anyone is having problems with the taste of your vitamins, I have found one that actually taste good. It taste like orange juice. I could not even get flintstone vitamins down but have no problem with this. Go to www.tyh.us for more info.

    Liquid vitamin or chewable?

I was having a terrible time with my vitmains. I am a wimp when it comes to things tasting bad. I found some liquid vitamins that actually taste good. I mix it with orange juice. My husband takes it by itself. Go to www.tyh.us for more information. I can tell a big difference when I take them. I ran out for a week and could really tell the difference in the way I felt. It cost more than your flintstone chewables but to me it is worth it.
  12. As long as I was fat, I was hard as a rock. Now that I have lost 61 lbs I have turned flabby. I wave goodby to someone and am apt to get injured by the flapping skin on my upper arms. I am sure I am not the only one with this problem. Those of you who have lost a lot of weight, will this ever get firm again. I am going to a gym, lifting weights and doing cardio several times a week, but I seem to just be getting more like jello every day. Please tell me there is hope in the end.
  13. I always thought that everyone paid a lot of attention to how fat I was. I have lost 52lbs and yesterday is the first time someone asked me if I had lost any weight. People that know about my surgery are always commenting on my looks, but never anyone else. I was beginning to think no one would ever notice and it was really getting me down. I feel as if I have cleared a big obsticle. I know this is probably petty of me but it sure did feel good for someone to notice. I went to the store today and another person noticed.:clap2: I think this just goes to show that people really don't pay that much attention to each other. I always felt as if I stuck out in a crowd because of my weight, and now I wonder if they ever noticed me that much. I think their stares were more in my head than in reality. Jana

    I paid to be tortured

I am so sorry you had such a bad experience at the gym. I got with a trainer when I was 4 weeks post op. I explained to her that I did not want to get sore because I was afraid I would quit. She was real helpful. I started my weights out low and worked my way up. I try to do cardio two days a week (20 minutes) and weights two to three times a week. By starting out slow, I have never gotten sore. My trainer showed me how to correctly use the equipment and weights. I started my liquid diet on May 14, 2005 and had my surgery on June 7th. I received my 50 lb pin monday night. I have gone from a tight size 24 to a tight 18 jean. I feel that the gym is a lot of the reason I have done so well. Don't be afraid of the gym. Just be careful and talk extensively to your trainer. It is not easy by any means but the results are worth it. Jana

    Food gets stuck

I am one month post band. I have had very few problems. I go for my first fill monday and am a little excited and anxious. My problem is not major but very troublesome. I am very careful about what I eat. At first when I would eat meat the food would feel as if it is stuck in my throat. This is sometimes very uncomfortable. I would have to get up and walk around to make it go down. I can feel it turn loose. I thought I was not chewing good enough but nothing seems to help. Now it is doing it even with soft foods like creamed potatoes. I had a small hernia repaired and I wonder if this could have something to do with it. I was told not to drink anything when I eat. My mouth feels so dry when I eat that I think this might be some of my problem. Have any of you had this problem? I intend to talk to my dr about it but just wanted your input.

    New outlook on life

I'm a little over 1 week post op. I feel like a giddy kid. I went today and had my hair cut and styled, something I never would have done before. I have a whole new outlook on life. It is an old saying that today is the first day of the rest of your life, but I really feel like it is. I have been fat my entire life and been on anti-depressents for the past 15 years. I just can't describe the feeling you get when you realize that there is going to be life and out there and you are going to live it. I am not fooling myself thinking that the road is going to be easy, but I actually laughed today and it felt so good. My bubble may get busted soon, but I am going to enjoy it while it last.

Boy are you lucky. My dr required 2 weeks liquid diet. My insurance lost the paperwork and it was either stay with it or start over. I was on liquids for 3 weeks pre op and 1 week post op. I still have one week to go with liquids and then I have two weeks of soft foods. The bright side of it is I have lost 31 lbs in those 4 weeks. I not sure I remember what food taste like.

    Another Newbie

Good luck. I am just 1 week post op. I already feel better and have more energy.
  20. Hello everyone. I had my lap band on June 7. I passed the one week point yesterday. I have to admit it was not as easy as I expected but it was not all that bad. I think ads where people go to work on the 2nd day are very very very much exaggerated. I look forward to being able to eat again. I have been on a liquid diet for 4 weeks and still have one to go. Any ideas on some things to drink would be appreciated. Yesterday was the first day since the surgery that I could drink without my stomach cramping. Today I am actually starting to feel a little bit hungry. I started out weighing 294lbs and at 5'3" that is definately obiese. This morning I weighed 263. I realize that when I start eating I might gain some of this back or be real slow losing any more, but I don't care. It feels wonderful to look at those scales. To those of you who are planning to have the surgery. My stomach felt as though I had exercised too hard and my muscles were real sore ( not too bad). My worst pain (which most probably will not have) was my neck and shoulder. The doctor thinks that it was hyperextended while they were putting the tube in. The other problem was my stomach cramping whenever anything but Water hit it. Because of this I became dehydrated for about 3 days. All in all it was not that bad of an experience. Would I do it again??????? :clap2: IN A HEARTBEAT!!!!!! I AM 49 YRS OLD AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS AND YEARS, I ACTUALLY LOOK FORWARD TO TOMORROW AND THE NEXT DAY AND THE NEXT.:biggrin1:

    7 1/2 hrs until I'm Banded!!!!!

By the time you get this you will already have had your surgery. Hope it went all right. I had mine done June 7 so I clearly remember what you are going through. I passed my one week mark yesterday. Everyone told me about the months to come but not much about the week to come. The ads tell of those who went to work in two days. They were a heck of a lot stronger than me. My insurance lost my first papers and I had already started my liquid diet, therefore I was on it for three weeks and lost 25 lbs before I even had the surgery. I may have been a little weak going in. My main problems were gas pains, and stomach cramping everytime I drank anything. I became severely dehydrated. The good news is that on the 7th day I woke up feeling like a different person. Today, the 8th day, I feel even better, so hopefully the worst is behind me. If you have any questions, feel free to ask since I am only a few days ahead of you. It really wasn't that bad, I just wasn't expecting some of the things I experienced and I was always afraid something was not right. As of today I have lost 31 lbs. Only 125 more to go. Jana
