Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum
paracelsus51 replied to Shesha's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Black Hills gold is my favorite. I don't wear much jewelry, but I always looking for more. Silverthorne is a long drive from Denver. I haven't been there for years. My mom plans on shopping pretty much non-stop next week while I am there for surgery. I am thinking I won't be joining her. -

I haven't really craved carbs, my stomach has. I miss my granola bars. I had a pretty set diet during the day and now I can't have pretty much any of it. It's not as bad as the other diets, so you'll be able to do it. I am just wanting the whole thing to be over with and I'll get nervous later. I thought I would be going nuts for bread which is one of my favorite foods ever, but not really. I am just bored to death with meat and vegetables. Ohhhh, more meat and vegetables. Ohhh, more mylanta. There is food everywhere at work and on tv torturing me. I've only a week left. I will also start working down the amount of food. Eating anything big right before surgery is a bad idea. I will probably need a chew toy after surgery just to keep in practice. -

Yep, my sister got kidney stones while on the low carb in pretty short time. I am eating more fruit than one a day to keep myself sane and the apples help the reflux and drinking all the time. Of course, with all the veggies, all I am getting is water. The reflux is bad and I now sound like I have a cold in the morning. I would love to be off the pills, or only on one. I take two double strength nexium a day and two pepcid and they don't help that much. I inherited this, so I know it's not going away. I've also been tested by every test possible, just to make sure I had GERD. Then, after months of testing, they tell me there is nothing they can really do for it, put the head of my bed up and don't drink orange juice. Oh, gosh, that was helpful. I am on day five of this diet and I am really starting to get cranky. I am not even craving the carbs, but I know they would make the stomach happy. I feel like I should be writing a blog from an island. Day 5-we've eaten everything available and now Bob is starting to look tasty... Thanks for the encouragement! -

Tornadoes are a way of life here. It's been very quiet this year around here, but very dry too. I know I am lucky not to be on a liquid diet. I am getting a band to solve the GERD and hopefully its side effects. Having no carbs is causing it to really act up (bread and crackers really help). I am popping supplements, pro-biotics and stomach meds to compensate. It's only ten more days, I can do that. I would not be able to do nothing but tea and broth for a month. That just seems extreme. After my last surgery under general, I had GI issues, didn't sleep for several weeks and had no appetite. I am trying to gather things beforehand this time. I lost a bunch of weight last time with no real side effects. I didn't have GERD back then, though. -

Not strange really. You've lived with that big body for a very long time. It takes time for you to adjust to changes, and these are big ones. I am on day three of the pre-op diet. I have to say, even though I am glad it's not an all liquid diet, that I really don't like it. No carbs to calm my stomach. I am taking all kinds of pills to keep the GERD at bay and manage the headaches. Eleven more days to go. I am also working on finding a protein supplement and learning to like yogurt. -
Any tips on survivng the Preop Diet

I just started my pre-op diet today. Not liquid, thankfully. It is the no carbs shrink your liver diet, so meat and vegetables. I have GERD, so I am now going to spend a lot of time eating Maalox. One day and my stomach is killing me. I've been using bread and crackers to help control it along with tons of drugs and now I can't have that. 13 days to go. I agree with the rest, keep busy. We are really busy at work or I'd be insane by now. -

I'm scheduled for the 18th. I've had surgery before and really, the anticipation is the worst thing. Lap surgery is lots easier than open. Don't get yourself worked up about it. I know that's nearly impossible. I am not looking forward to it, but I am really looking forward to the distinct possibility that my GERD will just be gone. That'll be worth every penny and discomfort. I am more irritated by the no solid food for weeks. I am glad I am taking three weeks off from work. I am sure my family will spend most of the time torturing me. We are all adults, but when we get together, we're all kids. -

1. How many Lap-Bands has he done? I am not sure of how many, but I am sure someone on here knows. He's done thousands of lap procedures though. 2. If I fly and have it done and then go back home, whats the average cost for a different doc to do the fills? The fills here are $250 for the fluoroscope and $100 for the regular fills. It would actually be cheaper to fly out to Denver than get a fill here. -

I am from Nebraska too. I am completely excluded on my policy for WLS, even as a treatment for GERD. GERD is a nightmare. I searched everywhere on the net to find someone. We have one of the best WLS surgeons right here, but his cost is more than $14,000 for the cheapest option. Even with the travel expenses, I will save more than $4,000. After reading everything about Kirshenbaum, I ended up choosing him. His office has been very responsive and I am scheduled for June 18th. Can't say I'm excited about surgery, but I am really hopeful for the results. I chose him after researching him as thoroughly as possible. I did not find another US doctor that people were so consistently happy with all things considered. I can understand your family. Mine is very supportive and they've all enquired about him too, so you are not alone there. My mom is coming with me. I am also thrilled with not having the pure liquid shake diet before surgery. I will have to check into the hotel with the recliner. I'd not thought of that. I had abdominal surgery a few years ago and lived in the recliner for a few weeks. -
I'm Not Telling Anyone I'm Being Banded.....

I've pretty much told everyone. I have to selfpay, so I am doing it with family help. They would've found out anyways, no real secrets in my family. My best friend had lapband, her mom had bypass, as well as another friend's mom. We are all fat for generations. My mom is going with me, as I am going out of state to save about 33% on the cost. I've told my coworkers. I have massive GERD and since I can't have the other stomach surgery, my doctor suggested this as basically my only choice I have left. So, for me, there won't be huge pressure to lose a ton of weight. If it fixes or lessens the GERD that will be success. I may not be able to handle any fills as they can make GERD worse. My workplace is very food oriented, so it would be hard to explain the weeks of baby food. They are also very supportive. I am very glad of that. I can absolutely understand not telling anyone. People can be very judgemental and know-it-alls. If you don't have a problem, it's very easy to just think the cure is simple. -
can anyone shed some light over here
paracelsus51 replied to suttonat64's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't had the band put in yet, but I have had a total abdominal hysterectomy. That was no fun, but they give you some drugs and you aren't going to care what's going on. It's kind of like they turn off the light switch and then turn it back on. The stress beforehand was much worse than the reality. I figure lap surgery will be much easier.
