If you use a program like http://www.fitday.com and track what you eat, including supplements for a couple of weeks, you can find out exactly what you are getting enough of, and what you're not getting enough of. I got the downloadable pc version to use, and I plug in my foods, and added in the custom info for my supplements, read the reports for my nutrient levels, and voila, know right away what I'm missing. I was amazed to discover how much I wasn't getting even though I feel I eat very healthy and was taking some supplements as well as multivitamins. Now I know where to supplement and when.

I'd say cynicism is healthy. Colon blow is primarily psyllium husk - it's a simple bulk forming fibre that expands over a hundred size it's time with Water. The extra bowel movement people produce is not from stuff accumulating in the bowel, but is simply the product they've taken expanded to it's maximum size once ingested. The weight lost is water weight from the bowel when the psyllium husk absorbs water from the body while in the bowels. Colon blow powder form is just psyllium husk and stevia (all stevia is is a herbal sweetner), no other ingredients. You can buy psyllium husk in bulk a zillion times cheaper in many places. Small amounts are helpful forms of fibre even for some bandsters. Large amounts like in products like colon blow have a risk for blockage, some surgeons recommend bandsters completely avoid bulk forming fibre supplements, like psyllium, because of the risk of blockage and slippage. The colon blow capsules, are boosted with seneca (senekot) and cascara - two simple inexpensive herbal laxatives. Again as with bulk forming Fiber, laxatives cause water weight loss as they pull water from the bowels. You may lose minimal amounts of fat/calorie loss with repeated use of laxatives as it causes food to move through your system faster impeding absorption - it also impedes absorption of essential Vitamins and minerals. If someone was set on doing a psyllium and/or psyllium and herbal laxative 'cleanse' I would a) consult with your lapband dr.'s office first to see what their restrictions/recommendations for large doses of bulk forming fiber, specifically psyllium use is. and if you do go through with it, hit a bulk store or health food store for psyillium at a fraction of the price. Psyllium husk is a readily available very cheap product. Here's a great resource for information on herbs/supplements I always like to consult before I take stuff. Just my 2 cents worth. :biggrin1:

PNut - Congratulations on the loss and the size 14's!!!!, and congratulations on having the courage to be open about your self-medication with the alcohol, not just to the board, but most importantly to yourself! I know a zillion people have said it, and will say it, ignore the haters. Issues with alcohol and/or drugs is -nothing- to be ashamed of. Just like struggling to overcome over eating, addiction is a medical issue, not a moral one. If people have diabetes or cancer no one attaches a stigma to it, substance abuse/addiction should be viewed the same, unfortunately it's not by too many - those people are the ignorant ones. Get support, get well, and keep us posted!!!! It's obvious to all, you have not only oodles of love and support around you at home, but here on lapbandtalk too. XO Leila

C=256 (-39 total; -2 this week) Shaving me head is my -reward- for reaching my mini goal of 200lbs. I used to wear my head shaved for years when I was smaller. I'd do it now except I think it looks odd when my body is this big. Here's some old pics. And when I reach goal weight, I'm buying leather clothes again!

argh! so I've dropped out of all my challenges. I'm using hubby's laptop right now, because mine has died and is going to get repaired. I've been able to come surf this site for the last week, but not post because my keypad was not working. I lost my pedometer for a few days. I had pain in one of my arches and subsequently leg for a few days that kept me off my feet because I don't have proper walking shoes, and I just got frustrated with it all. I've still been losing, and moving, just not as much. Sometimes record keeping and challenges serves to motivate me positively, and sometimes it backfires - I realized it was getting in the way since I was getting dissapointed and down, so decided to just opt out instead. Once we've stopped travelling and have settled down in one place for a while and I've got a gym membership going it will be easier for me to do something more structured.

Do you need to go on liquids the day of fill?
Leila replied to Leona06's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Each Dr. is different - mine nothing for 2 hours before your fill - then soft food for the rest of the fill day - then back to normal. 3 fills for me now - no problems. -

Free fills for life from my Dr.

I have the big VG band. I've had three fills in three weeks... LOL. First fill was 4 cc's. no restriction, second fill was .5 cc's, no restriction, last fill was this wednesday, 1 cc bringing me up to a grand total of 5.5 cc's. Well, I have some minimal restriction, I'm definitely not tight. I've been able to eat everything just fine, but my hunger seems to have gone away, I'll see how it is after a week goes by. I managed to get my steps in today! wooooo! I have blisters all over my feet though.. argh!

Happy Bandiversary! Thank you for posting your success, your photos, your list on NSV's! It's hope and inspiration to everyone, especially those of us newly banded. Congratulations! You should be proud of yourself, you've achieved so much in a year!!! :cheer2:

Cloe - yes, going insane with the heat. Being from Vancouver I'm not used to the regular hot humid weather of Ontario, never mind this super humid heat wave. I'm sticking around until Dr. Cobourn gets my fill right! LOL. I didn't make my goal of 10,000 steps yesterday, way too hot. Even in the AC of the camper van I just wanted to crash and recuperate. I'm tempted to lower my goal of steps to a lower number, but at the same time, I know if I keep it high, I probably won't make my goal, but, I will probably do more than if I lower it. I think I'll keep it where it's at.

Well had fill number 3 today, 3 fills in 3 weeks! This time he added a whole cc bringing me up to 5.5 cc's in the VG band. He pulled the previous cc's out to make sure they were there, and they were, and added the additional 1cc. He doesn't do fills under florou, says the accuracy has been shown to be the same either way. Drank water in the office to ensure that I wasn't over restricted, went down smooth, no problems. Went smooth and easy, still can't feel the port by palpitation, but when he went in with the needle he says it's still just where he placed it. I had a small can of some soft salmon salad made with light mayo about 3 hours post fill, and it went down fine, and I did feel satisfied on it. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I have restriction, and that it lasts. I'll be doing soft foods for the rest of the day (my Dr.'s guidelines for post fill) and trying regular solids tommorow. I've been doing my water fine. But I'm retaining water right now because of my menses, so my weight hasn't gone down this week with my wednesday weigh in. I -always- put on water weight during my period, so I'm not going to worry about it. So far through this whole thing I only had the one PB on the soft mackerel way back without even being restricted (something about that mackerel just stuck). Then this last week I did get a bit of a golf-ball with some mashed jamaican yam. I did drink water then to try to get unstuck, and the water unstuck me right away. Went through and the pain stopped immediately. I've heard some people say drinking when they are stuck makes it worse, and others say it makes it better, and some say sometimes it makes it worse and sometimes it makes it better. So I think it's a learning curve to work out what works with your body/band. I wonder if there is somewhere where we could go for the reunion where we could get spa treatments and some kind of group spa deal? It would be nice to make it something where we treat ourselves for our progress and celebrate being banded a year by pampering ourselves, what do people think?

Well, I've decided to make my Canadian August Challenge to do 10,000 steps a day recorded by the evil pedometer I bought. 10,000 steps daily is what is recommended for health.. and I have been terrible about walking. I swim every other day for about an hour, but I want to up my walking. Of course there's a heat wave, and I'm living out of a tiny camper with no walking space, but I'm not going to let that stop me! If I can't get it in between dog walks and trips to malls/stores. I'm going to walk in place in the camper (there isn't room to turn around enough to pace!). Since there is 31 days in august it should be 310000 steps for the month, but I'm giving myself one days worth of grace and rounding it down to 300000 steps for the month of august. I'm about to strap the pedometer on now to walk in place while I watch Oprah, LOL. Let's go Canadian bandsters! We can do it!!!! XO

I've totally nixed frozen treats for the time being just post banding in June, and travelling in an RV. My plan though once we have moved back into a place with a real kitchen is to invest in an ice cream maker. I think Jack has the right idea completely. I want to make italian ices -fat free- and sweetened with stevia for 0 cal treats. Then also some fat free frozen yogurt and fruit blends sweetened with stevia. Basically take some of the foods and beverages I'm already eating and transform them into frozen delights!!!! Argh! I wish we had room for an ice cream maker in the camper!!!! LOL! Just another thing to look forward to!

Made my water goal again yesterday, and got in a lot of exercise, I swam for an hour, and walked for half an hour in the evening after the sun went down and the heat wasn't so oppressive. I'm setting a month long goal for August too. In the Canada thread we decided to set individual fitness goals for August. Mine is for 300,000 steps on my pedometer for the month. They recommend you do a minimum of 10,000 steps a day for health. Well, I'm very inactive, so it's something I really need to work on. Since there is 31 days it should be 310000 steps, but I decided to give myself one days grace and round it down! LOL. I booked an appt. for my third fill for wednesday at 1:30. Hopefully third time's the charm and I get restriction! Restriction that lasts that is! Keep up the great work on the water everyone!
