Fainting And Spasms After Lapband Surgery
elcee replied to Living My Dream's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Most fainting is triggered by the vagus nerve. It connects the digestive system to the brain, and it's job is to manage blood flow to the gut. When food enters the system, the vagus nerve directs blood to the stomach and intestines, pulling it from other body tissues, including the brain. Unfortunately, the vagus nerve can get a little too excited and pull too much blood from the brain. Some things make it work harder, such as bearing down to have a bowel movement, or vomiting. Conditions that drop blood pressure amplify the effects of the vagus nerve. -

I can't imagine any Dr doing this. Changing his mind before he put the needle in yes maybe, afterwards - no way! -
Yes but you can't root for your team here which I am sure they can still do in the US.
-
Yes I can't imagine trying on a pair of jeans and asking does my fanny look fluffy in these! I only work casually so no not at work, just bored at home!

Help!! Please.....fill Won't Go In Or Come Out.....?

Told you so! -
I know it is weird to sound excited about being stuck but I am as that means my band is still there. I was beginning to wonder if it had somehow being absorbed into my body never to be seen or heard from again. Long story short after a partial unfill at the beg of the year I have been getting my band slowly refilled. It is awful as it feels as though I have no band at all. I can eat anything, don't need to eat slowly and it is doing nothing for my hunger. Yes when the band is not having an effect the bad eating habits sneak back up on you really quickly. Next app at which I am hoping to get filled to where I previously had restriction is on 15th June and that can't come soon enough. Anyway dinner last night was roast pork and veggies. Ate my veg and then had a slice of pork. Well obviously I must have eaten too quickly or something as I got stuck. Luckily I was able to bring it back up so the discomfort didn't last long but at least i know that the band is still there. I then stupidly had a slice of pork and some pistachios for lunch. Dumb I know. Got stuck again and this time it lasted longer. So now I know I should avoid pork - it can be dry and dense which is the problem. I haven't been able to do pork chops for ages but roast was OK. Now if only my band could start doing something for my hunger levels then I would be happy...........

Good luck

Generally you will only know your port has flipped when you go to get a fill and your Dr cannot access it.
-
If you have a bad stuck episode then you should rest your band for a while to let any swelling go down. Stick to liquid for a day or 2. If it is a simple stuck where you feel slight discomfort and you are quickly and easily able to cough the offending item back up then it should be fine to carry on eating, just pay extra attention to what and how you are eating.
-
If you are in pain and have been prescribed pain meds then you should be taking them. No good suffering just in case you end up constipated, if you do then there are things you can take to resolve that. The best thing to do to relieve the gas pain is to keep moving, it is not in your digestive system so gas x etc don't work. It is gas that has been pumped into your abdominal cavity to make it easier for the surgical team to work. They get most out but unfortunately some gets left behind and that can cause pain in odd places eg your shoulder. So take the meds your Dr has prescribed as Dr really does know best.

IF you have already lost some weight then your body needs a chance to catch up, you cannot expect to lose heaps all the time. There will be peaks and there will be troughs. As to the fill they are really not bad at all. No worse than when they take blood. It's a quick jab and then it's over. You probably put yourself through more pain on a regular basis plucking your eyebrows or getting your legs or bikini line or whatever waxed.

Nervous About Procedure 6/15/12
elcee replied to tstinnett's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I can't help myself, I'm terrified of going under even though I have had a number of ops. I think the best thing to do is remind yourself why you are doing this, how much healthier you will be in the long run and how much less risky it is than remaining obese. -
Sorry to hear that. What surgery did they do? Do they know what caused the band to slip? Was it something you ate? How long was the food stuck? Hope you feel better now

Question About How Fast R Slow U Eat
elcee replied to s0utherndivadoll's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So many things about the band and what they tell us do not make sense. E.G certain foods such as white bread or rice being a problem because they swell and cause discomfort in the stoma. It takes a while for them to swell so if the food really does pass through as quickly as they are now telling us then the swelling should occur when the food is in your main stomach and this should not cause discomfort. I just get really frustrated with the lack of clarity and facts about the how, when and wherefore of the band! -
You do not want to drink flat champagne it tastes horrible. How long have you been banded? Have you tried anything carbonated? I am able to drink champagne so long as I sip it slowly and don't drink whilst I am eating. Try something else carbonated prior to your anniversary e.g soda Water and see how you tolerate it. If it doesn't cause you discomfort then enjoy the champagne the way it is supposed to be enjoyed.

So you have just had more surgery?
-
Sounds like some form of plication. I would want more results before I put myself forward as a guinea pig. Plication is not really reversible as the stomach is likely to form scar tissue where it is folded in on itself. Why do you think this would be a better solution for you than the band?
-
The dietician is probably best for advice on foods to eat to maximise weight loss but the surgeon probably has more knowledge about foods that could be a problem with the band. I don't have a lot of respect for dieticians. Most of them seem to know no more about food and weight loss than the average person. They certainly don't tell you anything that you couldn't find in a 5 minute search on the internet. The other problem is that there are no exact answers when it comes to weight loss and the theories change all the time. 1 year fat is the enemy, the next it is sugar, then wheat then it is back to good old calorie counting.

I drink:- white wine white wine with soda champagne lite beer mixed drinks My usual drink is wine but sometimes I have one of the others on my list instead. You have to learn to listen to your body and what you can tolerate. Sometimes the champage has been a problem but if I remember to drink it away from mealtimes and sip it slowly then it is fine. If I am having a beer it is normally a local beer called Cascade light which is not very fizzy and 1 of those goes down fine. I had a vodka cruiser last night and felt awful afterwards. I don't think it was the carbonation as it had hardly any, I think I drank it too fast , on an empty stomach! Once I had some food I felt much better.
-
Sorry to hear all that. I had a similar experience earlier in the year and am busy in the process of being slowly refilled. This is what a slip is, the stomach moving up past the band, it is very rare that it slips the other way. Often slips like this can be fixed by emptying and resting the band.
-
It was 1 study. It states that carbonation was a risk factor it does not say that carbonation caused the slip. It is another 1 of those things that they have not yet proven and some believe it is so, so it is safer to err on the side of caution. There are many unknowns e.g they still haven't yet agreed on exactly how the band works . I do not want to get into an argument so lets both leave it at that. For people that are not sure what to believe the best advice is to go with what your surgeon advises. If you trust him/her enough to operate on you then you should be able to trust the rest of the advice that he gives you. That is what I have done.

We are going to have to agree to disagree. Although most surgeons don't want you to drink soda for the period following surgery a lot of them will tell you that after that if you can tolerate it without discomfort it is fine in moderation. If you drink excessive amounts then yes it probably could cause some issue but then too much Water can kill you too.
