I completely disagree. To expect someone to go 7 hours without food and say that it is just mind over body is unrealistic. If you are happy to go that long with out food then kudos to you but most people can't manage and band or no band they don't have to. Most Dr's are more than happy for you to eat a planned healthy snack mid afternoon. Mine recommended veggie Soup or fruit or a muesli bar or tuna or salad

That is because there is no SHOULD. There is a range for healthy and presumably you want to aim for that. Try this BMI calc , it's my favourite. http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/bmi.htm

Not Drinking When Eating
elcee replied to misslock's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have a drink before you eat, then you shouldn't be thirsty. -
I felt a bit nauseous for the first few days but that was resolved once I was allowed to eat Soup. I think too much sweet stuff combined with the anaesthetic was my problem. I had minimal pain which was sorted out with the meds my Dr prescribed, didn't have gas, had no issues drinking etc. I thought it was a fairly easy surgery but then I could say the same about my hysterectomy I had last year, my Dr was amazed at how quickly I was jumping in and out of bed, so maybe I just recover quickly.

Yes I think people considering the sleeve should go to the sleeve forum and read the complications for a reality check. It shows that life on the other side is not as rosy as many would like us to believe. Band bashing seems to be an international sport.

Happy Birthday

The article does say it is a medical emergency requiring either manoeuvre or surgery. The fact that they are not treating this as an emergency would seem to indicate that this is not the problem.

I don't follow a diet. the reason I got banded was so that I could give up dieting.I follow the guidelines my Dr has given me 99% of the time. What most people mean by 90/10 is not that they are only sticking to the rules 90% of the time but they are eating healthy, lowfat, nutritious food 90% of the time but they do allow themselves a small treat from time to time. For example eating 2 squares of chocolate a day will not make you obese - eating the whole block will. Nobody expects you to give up all "treat foods" for ever. Trying to do so is more likely to make you crave them and then give in and have more. Allowing them takes away that strong hold they have on you. So go ahead give yourself permission to include treats in moderation unless you are the kind of person that cannot stop once you start - then you might be better avoiding them altogether.

Eat more fruit and veg and grains

I'm confused. I can understand that your stomach could have slipped up through the band and be sitting incorrectly but to say your stomach is flipped upside down doesn't seem to make sense. Are they talking above or below the band? Can you get copies of the X Rays so that you can understand what they are talking about? I would have thought that if your stomach really had flipped that it would be a medical emergency.I am sure it is for horses! It is probably a "normal slip" and they are probably making you panic for nothing. The medical profession are really good at doing that. Fingers crossed.

With great difficulty! I think the main thing is to keep your "eye on the prize". Or the other thing I would do was go for lunch with friends and instead of having a meal just have cake. Sometimes a little of what you fancy does you good and depriving yourself or saying something is offlimits often backfires and makes you want it more.

Carbs are not bad and carbs in oatmeal are really good for you although I think it is better to cook it yourself than use instant. One thing oats are good for are lowering cholesterol If this is a short term solution to get over the hump then I don't see a problem. Sometimes knowing what you are able to eat in advance and being able to grab it quickly and easily makes a huge difference. Why not try the lower calorie option and if you do get hungry have a glass of milk or some non starchy vegetables to help fill you up. Good luck and let us know how it works.

I was actually wondering if there are still any guys on LBT. Most of the replies to threads that I read are all from females. Even B52 seems to be missing.

It is a long time and most people cannot go that long with food. Plan on having an afternoon snack of something healthy. So long as the snack is planned then it should be fine, problems arise when you are so hungry you just grab the nearest thing to hand.

Before Getting A Fill
elcee replied to cleescruggs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What you do before does not generally impact on the fill, it is how you eat afterwards that is important. I wouldn't eat right before a fill but if you have had your normal meal about an hour or more prior then it should be fine. -
Day 2 Post Op - Why Am I Hungry?!?!
elcee replied to Megatron's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My stomach growls all the time. Just be aware that it is not a symptom of hunger. If you eat every time your stomach growls you will put on weight. Not sure why stomachs growl so much more after banding but they do! -
It seems that a lot of Drs paint an overly rosy picture. It would be far more helpful if they told the truth. I am glad that you have decided to recommit. If you are determined I am sure you will be successful. What do they say - that things worth having do not come easily?

No tips. I have been going through the same. Got my last fill yesterday taking me to approx 0.5cc less than I was when i got badly stuck and unfilled. My Dr doesn't want to fill me to the level I was at previously although I swear I wasn't tight. I could eat anything (except the steak that caused the problem) I have only gained .3kg about 1lb since I saw him last so he is happy that I am fairly stable. I don't feel like that, I feel totally out of control. I feel very little restriction, can eat almost anything and get hungry far quicker which is my biggest downfall. I don't eat big meals but I do constantly graze. I have been sticking to soft foods today and so far my hunger seems to be more under control so fingers crossed that this fill will help. i don't really have any tips for you, I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. In fact this seems to be a common problem that a number of veteran bandsters are experiencing.

Stretch Band Pouch
elcee replied to ☠carolinagirl☠'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No -
I start reading this thread and copied this to say that herein lies the problem. However others have already pointed that out so I am just going to reinforce what they are saying. No weight loss surgery is going to work like a magic wand. There is no surgery or pill or treatment that will enable you to eat what you want and lose weight. If you want to be slim and healthy you have to suck it up and start taking some responsibility. You have to want to change and you have to make the good choices. Having a band will make it easier for you by helping to control your hunger but it will not choose what you decide to put in your mouth. It also won't make you get off your bottom and exercise! So it is up to you to decide if you want to stay fat and unhealthy and have all the associated health risks. If you do then give up trying , sit on the couch, eat junk food etc. But if you really want to be slim trim and healthy then recommit and take responsibility. Go back to your Dr and have your band adjusted. Start making healthy food choices. Noone says you have to give up chocolate and treats for ever, follow the 90 10 rule, or plan what you are going to eat for the day and include a couple of squares of chocolate or whatever in your planned eating. Whatever it takes to keep you on track. Find some exercise you like. It could be swimming, walking, dancing whatever - if you find something you like you are more likely to stick to it. If you can find a support group - meeting with others in your position helps heaps. And keep coming on here, you will find lots of support.

Having recently discovered that in the US fluffy means fat and combining that with the fact that in the US butts are commonly known as fannys does that mean that if Queen had been an American rock band the song would have been "Fluffy Fannied Girls"!!!! The mind boggles. That is 1 hit that would never have made it outside of the states!

Unable To Fill Because Can't Access Port!
elcee replied to neece1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I believe that it is fairly common for the port to flip. It all depends on how well it is stitched in place at surgery and if exercise or movement prior to it settling in place have caused it to move. I also think the Realise band may have more issues(but I am not sure) as that port is not stitched in place , it has teeth instead! If the port is badly flipped it is a relatively minor procedure to fix it. If it is not badly flipped then you may just have to have future fills under fluoro. -
Fainting And Spasms After Lapband Surgery
elcee replied to Living My Dream's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Other possibilities include Heart problems - arrythmias or cardiomyopathy Dehydration - are you drinking enough Hyperventilation - which may be linked to anxiety This article seems to give a lot of information and possibilities. http://www.merckmanuals.com/home/heart_and_blood_vessel_disorders/low_blood_pressure/fainting.html I would start keeping a diary. Date, time, where, what, what you were doing beforehand, if you were hungry, thirsty etc. This may then help to highlight a pattern which the Dr could use to decide what sort of further investigations may be necessary. Good luck with figuring it out
