Had First Fill Last Week, Painful Bruising!
elcee replied to BLING78's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Cazzy not sure if you are asking me or the OP. No I didn't. Never have and really can't see why one would be needed. The only exception was when I had to be unfilled in hospital after i got stuck and the unfill was done by the radiologist under fluoro. -
How Could I Be Gaining Weight Again!! ;-(
elcee replied to karibensea's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The sad fact is that the less you weigh the less you need to maintain or lose weight. E.G My ideal weight is around 50kg. I have gained back up to 52kg. In order to lose 2kg in 1 month I would need to eat 860cal per day for the 1st week, 855 2nd week, 849 3rd week, 843 3rd week. http://www.healthyweightforum.org/eng/calculators/calories-required/ I don't know how much you weigh but it is quite possible that 1200cal per day is too much for you for weight loss. The reason your dietician would have given you this figure is that this is the no. of calories per day that most believe to be the minimum an adult female should eat in order to remain healthy and meet all her nutritional needs. Instead of eating more you probably need to eat less or alternatively step up your exercise. -
Oh and I noticed a spelling mistake on the ticker tape thing on the news today. Liberral instead of Liberal. You would think the media would check thoroughly before going to air.
-
The problem is that our children are not being taught how to spell correctly. They submit work at school that is full of errors and the teachers do not correct it or mark them down because of it. SMSing and computers also make them lazy and often they have no idea of the correct way to spell something. Spell check is a nightmare as it gives the American spelling even if you have some other form of English selected( NB If you are American then obviously that is fine) and as others have already pointed out it does not check grammar. The way things are going we will eventually get to a point where no one can spell and that will make reading the written word extremely difficult.

Had First Fill Last Week, Painful Bruising!
elcee replied to BLING78's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have a bruise from my last fill which was almost 3 weeks ago. The fill was not painful although the Dr did have to manipulate the needle a bit more than usual. I am sure that he must have just hit a small blood vessel , nothing to be worried about. -
Nice to see you back, have you been on holiday? Maintenance is something we will all have to work at for life. It would be nice to let down the guard but that is when bad habits sneak back in. Bands do seem to loosen up over time. After 3 years I very rarely feel any restriction yet I am at a point where my Dr is not happy to fill me any further. So at this point it is about making sure that i am in control and do not let things get too out of hand. I have contemplated doing the 5 day thing but that is as far as it has got. Let us know how it goes for you

Does Everyone Go Through Bandster Hell?
elcee replied to esmlaura's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't believe they do. A lot of it depends on your mindset and what you are expecting. I lost weight from the time I had surgery until I hit my goal. I did not feel exceptionally hungry and was able to stick to the guidelines. Yes the 2 weeks of liquid only were a PITA but I got through them. My first fill was at 3 weeks out but it was only 1.5ml. However I found that each fill made enough difference that I could stick to what I should be eating and not be overly hungry. But I kept reading on here that I would reach this magical place ( in those days it was referred to as "the sweet spot" now more commonly as restriction) where I would be able to eat just 3 tiny meals per day and never be hungry! Wow it sounded amazing. But I never hit that spot so from that point of view I probably did experience bandster hell. I think the reason I didn't hit is was because it doesn't really exist or at least not in the way that it is marketed. If you have realistic expectations it will make the process easier. -
Don't Sell Yourself Short - How Much Have You Really Lost
elcee replied to elcee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are many ways of looking at it and percentages can be of various things. I could have started a thread about how much of your excess weight had been lost but I find that a lot harder to determine as then you have to decide what your excess is. Is it simply anything over normal BMI or is it what you consider to be your excess? I could also have started one with what I have lost compared to what I weigh now - that would have given me a figure of 48% of my current weight. In the end it doesn't matter. The point of this thread was to encourage and make people feel good about themselves and what they have achieved. But for purposes of consistency lets all use the same calculation in this particular thread - total lost divided by starting weight -
You shouldn't have to be on liquids for a few days. You should probably just take things slowly and easily . When I had my major unfill I got to eat soft foods as soon as I could get them down - I was ravenous at that point and then went back to "normal" eating the next day.

Don't Sell Yourself Short - How Much Have You Really Lost
elcee replied to elcee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need your starting weight as we are calculating a percentage of the weight we were initially, then you divide the amount lost by the starting weight. So mine was 24 divided by 74 = 32.432 . -

I agree, you're a loser, we all are -
I'm the same. I'm 2kg heavier thanI was and I hate it. I keep looking at all the diet books in the stores and thinking maybe I should try Sugar Busters 17 Day diet Dukan No wheat Fat Flush No food etc etc I'm sure that was what i did preband and it never helped me then so I'm not sure why it should now. Realistically i know that I need to cut back on snacking and if I do snack stick to fruit or veggies or basically anything other than Cookies or chocolate! And the other thing I need to do is move more.

Well done. I bet looking at it this way makes you all feel extra amazing! -
I am not going to state who is correct and who is incorrect in this argument but there are a couple of very valid points. Why is someone who is not banded and hasn't considered being banded posting on the band board trying to put others off? Is it because they believe that they are party to information that others do not have and can help us see the light. I intensely dislike missionaries of any sort! As a person with the band I do sometimes stray onto other boards. In fact I quite often read through some of the threads on the sleeve board. However I'm neither rude nor arrogant enough to start posting opinions there which are contrary to their own. If they have decided they are happy with the sleeve surgery then I would assume that they have made an educated decision after weighing up the risks. I might disagree with their choices but i do that quietly to myself. If I want to read the complications thread and think to myself "wow I am glad I didn't choose the sleeve as some of those complications sound horrific" then I do.......... I read it and sometimes I might come back in here and post a link to a particular thread but I don't post in their forum. I also do not PM people and harass them I do not feel someone is fully qualified to comment on a procedure unless they have experienced it or studied it in great depth.

Food Sticking In Esophagus?
elcee replied to TornadoKnight Matt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What are you eating? Are you following the post op diet your Dr has recommended? Usually your food would not be getting stuck as after surgery most people spend 2 weeks on liquids then 2 weeks on mushies then 2 weeks on soft before following a "normal" diet. If you have been cleared to eat then possibilities are:- Your bites are too big You are not chewing properly You are not waiting long enough between bites The food is not a band friendly food. Even without any fill the band because of how and where it is placed does make a certain amount of difference. The other possibility is that your band put some Fluid in your band when he/she did surgery. This does sometimes lead to problems. -
12 Sticks Later And Two Blown Veins I Do Live To Tell The Tail!!!
elcee commented on newlife4nekaylyn's blog entry in newlife4nekaylyn's Blog
I'm the opposite, much prefer having an IV in am arm but quite often they put it in my hand as it is easier for them. I find there it hurts so much more and it makes it difficult to use your hand. It sucks when a non bariatric Dr tries to unfill you. When I was in the ER I was lucky, after 2 attempts (which weren't too painfull) he sent me to have it done under fluoro. For the record here in Aus they never numb before filling and I have never found it to be a problem. I think maybe they use a different needle here because it does not look exceptionally long and thick to me. Sorry you had to go through this but hope you feel better now. -
Good luck, you will be fine.

Kilograms To Pounds, Add A Link On Site???
elcee replied to meyouus's topic in Website Assistance & Suggestions
Yep it is a very simple conversion. -
It is always hard to know what to grab if you are out and about. I am often out in the middle of the day and trying to find an easy, healthy ,band friendly option is not easy.

I think fruit is difficult as it is hard to chew. A lot of it, especially summer fruits have that really smooth slippery texture that you literally cannot get your teeth into and so you end up swallowing a bite that is too big. I eat very little fruit which is not good. Stewed fruit may be easier to eat , maybe try some stewed apple or make the fruit into a puree and pour it over yogurt.

I think we might be related. I haven't parallel parked my car since I got my licence.

Actually the rants and raves section is a totally off topic section of the website. A lot of us have grown to know and like each other since joining LBT and we like to discuss things other than the Lap Band. In the rants and raves section nothing is sacrosant. You can feel free to discuss politics, religion , in fact anything that you wish to rant or rave about. Whilst we might all aspire to be perfect , most of us are not. Political correctness is not normal human behaviour, it is something that has been thrust on us. None of us would condone anything that was hateful or racist etc but if we wish to pick on a thing that annoys us that is fine. We are picking on the thing, not on a person. Most of us know that feeling this way about certain things is silly or irrational but we cannot help the way we feel. So if these threads offend your sensibilities then the best thing to do is stay out of this area, and be very careful too if you wander into the powder room gone wild section. You could of course always start your own rant & rave . Maybe I hate people that pick on silly spelling mistakes?

More info is needed if you would like some input. When were you banded? What/how much are you eating? What/how much exercise are you doing?
-
No reason for them to postpone it, if you let them know then they will handle it appropriately.

The one which made me laugh the other day was when someone used "Walla". Now what may you ask is Walla? The way it was used I think they meant Voila, which admittedly is a French word so a lot of people may not be able to spell it, but if you want to use foreign words you should at least have some idea of how they are spelt!
