Just ate 1/2 a curly wurly in secret after everyone else went to bed. If that isn't dysfunctional eating i'm not sure what is! Tomorrow I have to stop this and recommit.

Major complications.... Forceful vomiting the past few days....
elcee replied to raerae8513's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Being there, done that, worst stuck ever. Ended up taking myself to hospital after suffering the whole night. I now know to not get too complacent even when it feels like I could eat anything. -
Not a great choice for your first solid food. they may both be healthy and slimming but they are both foods that can be really difficult to eat when banded. Take care.

Question for those who have kids 12 or over
elcee replied to cat whisperer's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i didn't tell either of mine.My daughter was away at uni so she didn't even know I was going for any kind of surgery and my son who was 15 i just told him I had to go in for some minor test. I told both of them about a year later. My daughter was a bit relieved as she apparently thought I was bulimic. My son said that he had figured it out anyway. -
Mis is right. i have had my band for almost 4 years and I like to see my Dr twice a year - I like to confirm that everything is ok.

You will have to change your relationship with food and find techniques for dealing with the habit eating. The band controls your hunger so you are less likely to want to eat the Snacks but it won't stop you.The longer you have been banded the easier eating junk becomes.I have been banded nearly 4 years and could graze all day if I let myself.
-
Yes you are only human, we all make mistakes. I have never been a binge eater so I don't understand the urges behind it, my issue is I am a grazer and I have to fight that all the time. The band does nothing to help. It did for the first couple of years but now the urge to snack is back in a big way. I am sure that you will not repeat this mistake again soon and you will be fine.

Or you could have first bite syndrome.

Had Lap Band and have BIG sweet craving!
elcee replied to wendythatsmyname's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It means that you are too tight. You need to get some fluid taken out so that you can eat proper food. Many sweet things are sliders, so they go down easily even if you are too tight and they are high calorie so they stop you from losing. -
Burping, tooting, loud gurgling are all part of life with the band.

I don't know about only eating 1 or 2 meals per day. It is more likely to be 3 meals plus some planned snacks. the 2 meals or less Utopia that some Dr's describe DOES NOT EXIST.

Tips or things I wish someone had told me before surgery
elcee replied to cnotche's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish someone had told me that feeling satisfied with a band is very different to feeling satisfied without, it can be more of an uncomfortable feeling. I wish someone had told me that the 3 meals a day(or two) with no hunger in between was just marketing - that in reality most people need 3 meals plus snacks. -
I don't know of 1 either.I'm afraid this is 1 of those instances where the marketing doesn't match up to reality. In the book I was given I was told to eat 3 times a day , no Snacks and if I wasn't hungry then eating only twice would be fine. Yeah right, I should be so lucky. I definitely need 3 meals and 2 , sometimes 3 snacks a day. I think the problem is that the literature is written by medical people that don't have eating issues or bands. They paint an ideal picture but the reality is far different. Stop chasing some ideal green zone utopia that doesn't exist (except for maybe a very tiny percentage) and work with what you have.

That is ridiculous advice. This person is probably heading for disaster.

First Fill..go in with an empty stomach?
elcee replied to SaraWalk's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I get to eat as normal prior to the fill -
I also think there is a range of what those feelings can be. For instance I often read that people no longer eat- bread, meat, chicken, veg etc etc as they can't. Well is it because they can't or because it is uncomfortable to do so? If it is the latter then is that good or bad? I find the uncomfortable feeling prevents me eating more than anything else does. Now I know that eating should never be uncomfortable but that does seem to be 1 of the side effects of the band. If you avoid this feeling altogether and only eat slider foods then it is easy to overeat and not feel that full feeling. An example. If I eat eggs for Breakfast or yogurt and berries I can eat them easily and 2 hours later be hungry and looking for food again. Over Easter I decided to have the ocasional hot X bun. i only ate 1/2 a bun and had it toasted. Eating the bun was mildly uncomfortable but I carried on because I really wanted it ( yes destructive eating behavious I know). It didn't get stuck but it did feel uncomfortable enough to keep me full right up until lunchtime! I don't profess to know the answer even though I have been banded for almost 4 years.I still have lots of questions as to how and why and what.I think we just all have to work with our band and try to do our best and make the best food decisions that we can.

I think I've made my decision (revision)...
elcee replied to marfar7's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Good luck . I would also want another surgery as I agree that keeping the weight off without assistance is too hard. Have a lovely holiday and keep us updated with how you go. You're part of our family. -
Interesting that you don't understand the point of the post, I thought I explained myself quite clearly! It shows that people with sleeves have exactly the same issues that people with bands do.Some are ecstatically happy with their choice, some wish they had never done it. Some had serious complication etc. You have posted the summary info from the survey but it is far more interesting to read the entire thread. If you do this then you will discover that not everyone thinks the sleeve is the perfect solution as a number of unhappy bandsters would have us believe. I do find it rather ironic that it is OK for you to post in this forum telling us how bad and how dangerous the band is and how soon it won't be used as a form of WLS anymore yet when someone posts a direct link to a sleeve forum that gives a range of opinions on the sleeve you can't see the point. The whole point is balance and giving people as much information as possible so that they can make informed decisions.

Secondary Achalasia due to AGB (warning, complication post) :). The Why??
elcee replied to Baba Wawa's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think a lot of the problem is due to the changing views on how the band works. When I was banded , almost 4 years ago, I was told and all the available information stated that the band was designed to allow the food to pass from the top part to the lower part of the stomach very slowly. That is should take at least 20 minutes but could take longer. In Australia we were never told to measure in cups but rather use a small plate as our guideline. We were told to eat slowly but never told that we had to wait a minute or more between bites. Somehow over the last 4 years the thinking on how the band works has changed.I'm still not sure if the new thinking applies to all bands or if it is only the more recent surgeries that have had a different placement that it applies to. I know some people with 4cc bands that will swear blind that food does not pass through their pouch quickly. I think that the misinformation has caused a lot of confusion and it may also have contributed to a lot of the problems. Achalasia is a possible complication.About a year ago my Dr told me that it was something that they were seeing an increase of but they weren't sure why. -
Great to hear.
