Bypass complications Preparing for surgery Revisions from band to bypass I would like to be able to find all the threads relating to a topic in one place
  2. I didnt realise that getting stuck was an issue with a bypass, I thought those were band type problems. I obviously have lots to learn! I would say from what I do know though that eating what you did at this stage seems way ahead of schedule. Its never a good idea to do that as you can cause damage
  3. Thanks Matt Can you give me more info on why you believe the revision was the best choice ever.
  4. I was weighing up the choice between a revision to a bypass or doing nothing - I definitely wouldn't be looking at going against my surgeon's advice. My problem ( and my husbands) is that I still have this belief that I "should"be able to do it on my own.

    Some People...........

Got really really irritated today. There was a discussion on a fb group that I belong to about effective appetite suppressants. I posted that as far as I was aware surgery was the most effective tool that we currently have for losing and maintaing weight loss although it is not a magic wand. A lot of the posts on the thread were very flippant and unsympathetic but the one that really got to me was some guy that posted this "I think surgery is a stupid idea. Free up some hospital beds and poor overworked staff and go for a run". A bit further along one of the mods then came out and said she had had lapband surgery and that a lot of the comments upset her. I responded that I thought that there were a lot of nasty bigots and geez then the **** really hit the fan. Apparently it is far worse to call someone a bigot than it is to say a fat person should just go for a run. At no point did any of the other people in the group come out in support of me and what I had said . So in summary. When discussing weight loss and effective appetite suppressants it is ok to :- be flippant suggest smoking crystal meth tapeworms etc Imply that a person is fat because they are lazy Imply that weight loss is easy , all it takes is to eat less and move more Imply that fat people are parasites that are clogging up the hospital system But it is not Ok to call someone a bigot for having those opinions.

    Obamacare may deny WLS?

Can someone please explain this for me simply? Obamacare is a public health system , is that correct? America is 1 of the few 1st world countries that do not have 1 so presumably introducing 1 is a good idea? For some reason the idea of people being able to access public health is so awful that it has managed to shut the US govt or parts of it down? Flabbergasted!

    Saving the Best for Last

I have had dessert for lunch twice this week. It tasted great and was far more enjoyable than forcing myself to eat a salad or something healthy first because that is what we are supposed to do.
  11. I find all these posts interesting and I really don't think there is a 1 size fits all solution. I have had my band now for 4 years and sometimes when something gets stuck or I PB I fantasize about getting the sleeve and imagine how easy it must be but I don't think that is true. I was out to lunch yesterday. In the group 3 of us have had WLS. 1 person has been banded longer than me and has just had her band replaced because of a slip. She had regained most of the weight that she lost and is currently at the point where she is starting to have fills and is hoping to find restriction. At lunch she ate far more than I have ever been able to eat since being banded. Then my other friend got a sleeve approx 2 months ago. She has lost approx 20kg, 10kg of which was prior to surgery. She was complaining that she has stopped losing. I did point out that it is normal to plateau and I also pointed out that 10kg in 2 months is right on track 1/2 - 1 kg (1 - 2lb ) per week. She seemed to think she should be losing 1 - 2 kg per week. She is the kind of person that I do not believe educated herself well prior to surgery.I also asked if she was sticking to her diet recommendations and she said no! What is she expecting? Interestingly she did say that she gets REALLY hungry. She ate about the same as me but that in itself is far more than I would have been able to eat in my early days of being banded. Then if I think of myself I could turn around and say that after 4 years my band is no longer working. Initially when I was banded I ate small portions, did not get hungry between meals, found it easy to refuse chocolate and cake and lost weight easily. Most of that is no longer true. I get hungry a lot quicker and I find it hard to say no to sweets and cake. In fact 2 days this week I had dessert instead of lunch! (note that was instead of not as well as). I have gained approx 4kg since my lowest weight. So I sometimes think that yes my band isnt working and yes a sleeve would be great but is that really true. I am still within normal BMI, I eat far less than anyone else I know and I eat a lot less than my friend that was recently sleeved! Now if someone could hurry up and perfect that magic wand then maybe I wouldnt be so confused!

    Success after Lap Band Removal?

Sounds awful , glad that you are now feeling better. However I do not see how the band had anything to do with food blocking your airway. If food blocks your airway it is known as choking and it can happen to anyone.

    Heart rate monitor

Your fitbit is probably pretty close to accurate if you have entered all your personal details correctly. One mistake people often make is overestimating how many calories they burn through exercise.

Who I'd love to meet from here...

I have just seen this thread. Thanks Lellow, more than happy to meet, we can always plan a coffee or shopping trip or something in the city when we both have time off. Yes I would love to meet a heap of people from here too. A Lapband meetup would be awesome, only problem is funds or lack thereof. Maybe we should approach Allergan or whoever owns the band these days and suggest that they need to make a new ad and that we should all be in it.

    Stomach growling??

Noisy stomachs do not mean you are hungry. Mine does it all the time, often after I have just eaten. Its a common part of banded life so you may find you need to get used to it.

    Help! Too tight?

You are too tight and I believe you know that. Can't eat much Can't even drink much Foaming Fearing dehydration Yet you think it's worth it because you are losing weight.............................. I would tell you how dangerous it is but I am sure you know that already so I won't waste my breath
  17. Never heard of one above the breast before.
  18. For those that regret their decision to be banded or are contemplating WLS and think that the sleeve is 'perfect" this is a brilliant thread that I think is well worth reading. It shows that people with sleeves have exactly the same issues that people with bands do.Some are ecstatically happy with their choice, some wish they had never done it. Some had serious complication etc. http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/74528-would-you-have-weight-loss-surgery-again/page__st__120 So remember there is no perfect WLS. Each individual has to decide , in conjunction with their Dr, what they feel is right for them. It is very important to be aware of possible risks and complications. Whatever surgery you decide on , make sure you do it with your EYES WIDE OPEN.

That is basically what I get told too.
  22. elcee

    Some People...........

so what do you think about my comment and the way I was treated? Is calling someone a bigot really worse than telling a fat person to stop wasting hospital resources and just go for a run?
