Mainly interested in hearing what people eat . Not in the immediate post op stage but when they are further along. What foods are ok, what are difficult etc.

Does anyone feel pressured by surgeon to have the bypass (instead of sleeve)
elcee replied to Mayastone's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why ? Surely it would be better to have a bypass than wake up with neither. -
you and me both laural44.

I have a band, recently went to see my surgeon as it is no longer helping. He told me that a band to sleeve revision would not be recommended as there is a very high risk of reflux with a sleeve, apparently reflux is rare with RNY.

The thought of a catheter.. scary!
elcee replied to Ed_NW's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had one when I had my hysterectomy. I hated it as I felt like I needed to wee the whole time even with it in! -
I agree and mine is a revision from a band so I would have hoped it would go quicker. Saw my surgeon on 18 Sept. He suggested a revision to RNY and I was given all the info and costings. Did some research , discussed it with hubby and decided I want to go ahead so called his office a week later to ask what the process was. Apparently I have to see the surgeon again before I can be given a date, I was hoping that I would at least be given a provisional date as I like to be organised and know whats what. Seeing him on 29th Oct and the NUT a day later. Did manage to get a referral for the preop consult and that Dr had a cancellation so got in on the same day. That was a bit weird, I was expecting the ECG but hadn't been warned he would need to look at my armpit! So hoping that I get a date soon.

Yep it's awful. Had to do it for my band in 2009 and now looking at a revision so will have to go through it again. Not sure how I'll cope because these days I seem incapable of having a liquids only day. The only way through is to keep focusing on those goalposts and the end game

Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
elcee replied to Elrix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So true. Steak and chops are a nightmare. Chicken is fine some days but not others. Burgers and sausages are a little better. Bread doesn't go down well but thats no great loss but cake is easy, as is chocolate, biscuits, nut bars etc. On the positive side I can know eat things like raw carrots, celery and corn which I couldnt for a long time. -
Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!

At 5 years I would have said the same thing. I was still slim, feeling great and would get annoyed with all the negativity about the band. But now after 9 years I understand. At some point something happens ( not really definable) and that tool stops working. It's like having a chainsaw with no motor. You don't want to throw it away because it cost a heap and it worked well in the past, so you keep using it and you get frustrated that no matter what you do you can't cut through that tree. You blame yourself, think that it is something that you are doing wrong but in reality that tool needs to be thrown away and replaced because it is never going to give you the result you want again. I need HELP!!! Will my lapband work again???
elcee replied to IvyMay's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
There has been a lot of effort with my band yet that doesn’t change the fact that at this point it may as well not be there. Yes there are a lot of issues with non compliant patients not losing weight but that is not the only issue. Bands them selves have not lived up to their promise, nothing to do with patient compliance, visits to surgeons or insurance. If your band is still helping you then you are one of the lucky ones. -
I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

How Long After Surgery for International Travel
elcee replied to Gundy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I see my surgeon in 3 weeks at which point I am hoping he will give me the go ahead for a revision from band to RNY. I am hoping I can still get a date this year as my 25th anniversary is mid Feb and hubby and I are wanting to go on a short trip, preferably somewhere warm with sea and sand. I want to be far enough out from surgery that I can eat "regular" food ( as opposed to still being in the soft or puree stages and also don't want to have any other issues. What are the general recommendations for international travel after bariatric surgery? -

I need HELP!!! Will my lapband work again???
elcee replied to IvyMay's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm nine years out and my band may as well not be there. it does nothing to curb my hunger. Studies now show that bands are not a long term solution and they are rapidly falling out of favour. -
Ive had this issue since I was in my 20s ( nothing to do with surgery). Its annoying because its really hard to get a good nights sleep. Have given up on trying to find the cause and solution as so far no Dr has come up with one

How long are they generally left in for? Don't they usually take them out before they send you home from hospital

I have a band looking to revise to bypass. I know that bandsters don't generally get dumping but I occasionally have a very strange set of symptoms. I will get a pain in my one shoulder blade and a severe headache, feel horribly nauseous and as though I am about to pass out. It is generally caused by drinking some form of white spirits e.g gin or vodka, sweet drinks such as flavoured cider and once it happened when I drank a slushie. Anyone have any idea what this is?

Is it possible that you have developed gallstones?
-
I have a band and have never had any hair loss issues. One of my friends that is sleeved does.
-
Plus one of the issues is that dope gives most people the munchies
-
Cigarettes are also legal but smoking is not generally recommended

Correct but in the big scheme of things spelling and grammatical errors are the least of our worries. Dont forget that after you lose weight you may be left with loose skin. I have also heard that for some their stools may be loose. Let’s just keep sight of the big picture and stay on track to lose weight and not lose our marbles and try not to end up with loose morals!

What size is a piece of string? No one can predict this because everyone is different. Also whatever shape you are now you will be the same type of shape but smaller . I'm an apple - when I lost weight I was a smaller apple but still an apple. So it all depends where you retain your weight

isnt it a great feeling

Best alcoholic beverage (in moderation)
elcee replied to LL44's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Wine. Its not carbonated and there are some studies that say a small glass of wine is actually healthy. Red is supposed to be best but i prefer the light whites.
