Is gastric bypass surgery reversible at all??
elcee replied to iPixie's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sorry to hear you are struggling, hopefully whatever the issue is is sorted out quickly. Having regret after such a huge life changing surgery is common, especially in the beginning. That doesn’t mean it would get reversed , that is only done in very rare circumstances. Had you had a sleeve you could just as easily feel the same way you do now. Early regret is not restricted to RNY patients -

That would be disappointing. Did you follow the prepop diet that the DR gave you? -

Two Years Out and Major Weight Regain

Why would you still need protein shakes this far out. Surely the aim by now should be to get your protein from food. -
Nausea instead of Hunger?
elcee replied to katiemarie22's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are probably waiting too long between meals and the nausea is a symptom of low blood sugar. Try eating at specific times before you start feeling yucky -
What issues were you having that they decided to admit you?

You need to start establishing good eating patterns that you will take forward into the future. 3 meals a day plus possibly 2 or 3 PLANNED snacks. Eating constantly will set you up for failure

Are you pre surgery or post surgery? Are the moods related to your diet, lack of food, stress from not having your usual emotional crutches or is it something else. More info required

Fingers crossed

Not feeling well after eating
elcee replied to Ali92's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like dumping. Is there a particular type of food that seems to trigger it? Are you drinking with your meals? I havent had my RNY yet so I can’t help you with how to deal with an episode but I am keen on what other people do that helps. -
Any kind of chest pain should be checked by a Dr just to make sure it’s not heart related. I am guessing it is probable acid/ reflux but you need to get properly diagnosed

3 days post op and I’m in hell

Try sucking crushed ice, that is often easier than drinking. -
Hi Bypass lady. I'm in Vic too. Scheduled for my revision from band to RNY in Jan. If you are in a lot of pain I would advise you to call your surgeons room and see what they advise.

The sleeve is the first part of a duodenal switch not an RNY

All surgery is scary and there is a different way you could look at it. Yes they are rearranging your intestine but on the plus side everything is still there, they aren't chopping something off and throwing it away. It is even technically reversible ( although that would only be done under extreme circumstances)

Having 2 Drs with totally different opinions would be a concern. I would be asking both of them lots of questions to find out why they are recommending the 1 surgery over the other. Personally I would avoid the VSG if you have any signs of reflux, whilst you may not feel the symptoms now the surgery is likely to exacerbate them. Do a search, there are plenty of stories here of people that have had to revise from VSG due to reflux. Do you really want to take the risk and possibly require a revision to RNY at a later date?

I can imagine that it would be very difficult to do any surgery laparoscopically. I wonder if open surgery is a safer option

Endoscopy and motility test! I’m abnormal!
elcee replied to MSG0310's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand cost is an issue, I hate the fact that I now have to fork out for an RNY when I paid for a band years ago. For that reason I would want to be sure that the surgery I was choosing was the 1 that was right for me. I wouldn't want to do the cheaper surgery as a second choice to save money as in the long run it may end up costing more. What is the price difference? If the surgeon recommends that you go with a procedure other than the VSG would it be possible that you could fund the difference if you waited a couple of months? It might be better to wait rather than run the risk that you have major reflux issues and the need for further surgery in the future. Good luck with the tests . Let us know how you go -
Endoscopy and motility test! I’m abnormal!
elcee replied to MSG0310's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For some reason and I'm not sure what it is there is a perception out there that a sleeve is an easy or minor surgery compared to a bypass. Let's think about that. With a VSG your surgeon takes a large portion of your stomach cuts it off and throws it away. With an RNY your surgeon rearranges the way your stomach is connected but doesn't throw anything away. So they are both MAJOR surgeries. A VSG is a restrictive only procedure. An RNY is both restrictive and malabsorptive. For me after having had one procedure that only gave " restriction" I am quite happy to consider a procedure that gives both. I don't see taking daily multivitamins as an issue. There is a high risk of reflux with a VSG. Dumping - it's not something I'm looking forward to but it may just be what I need. If eating chocolate or sugary foods causes me to feel like crap then I am a lot more likely to not eat them. Not all bypass patients get dumping but for the ones that do it may be just the thing that they need to help them stay on track. So my advice would be LISTEN TO YOUR SURGEON. If he advises 1 procedure over the other keep an open mind and ask lots of questions as to why he thinks it would be better. If you are willing to trust him with your life then you need to be able to trust his judgement . -
Waking up coughing in the night is probably due to reflux and acid creeping back up your oesophagus. It has happened to me a number of times and it is horrible. The probable reason for you not being able to swallow is oesophagal failure. I have been advised by my surgeon that this is quite a common problem. With a band the oesophagus works so hard to push food through that it eventually gets to a point where it can no longer do so. You need to go and see your surgeon and discuss your options. The band needs to be removed and you probably want to revise to another type of WLS. I have been advised by my surgeon that a sleeve is NOT a good option after a band due to the high risk of reflux. As you already have symptoms you will probably be advised to go with a Roux en Y gastric bypass. This is the route that I am going with in Jan after having my band since 2009. Some surgeons like to do a 2 step procedure with 2 separate surgeries but some will do both in 1. Now I'm not sure what the NHS will or won't cover. Here in Aus having the band removed and revised to an RNY means I have to pay another lot of "out of pocket" costs +/-$5000. If only we could get a refund for the band because of the issues it has caused.

Great Article/Blog Post: Deadly Mistakes With WLS Than Can Ruin Your Life
elcee replied to FluffyChix's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Interesting article. However I think that there should be more clarification on drinking water. Years ago I was trying to consume 2 litres of water per day in addition to the other low cal drinks I was drinking each day as this is the message that was being pushed by the media. Turns out I was drinking far too much and that can be dangerous. It needs to be clarified that other liquids do count, it doesn’t have to be plain water. I rarely drink water unless it is a really hot day and the water is very cold as I don’t like the taste. The rest of the time I drink tea, no sugar and a splash of light milk - that is fine. So is drinking cordial or flavoured water etc. The most important thing is to get in sufficient liquid and obviously for a wls patient that needs to be low cal. The part about grazing is also very true. WLS has always been more effective for people that are traditionally big meal eaters. If your natural pattern is to graze constantly it doesn’t offer as much help. You have to make a conscious choice to plan and eat proper meals -
