2nd fill..most things get stuck!
elcee replied to Agnes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got my 3rd fill just over a week ago and am having a similar problem. I think I eat slowly and take small bites but obviously not small/slow enough.Sometimes I think it may be first bite syndrome as I can feel the sensation in my throat even before I have swallowed. My daughter came home for a surprise visit at the weekend and I have not told her that I have had the surgery. Probably a mistake as I can feel her watching me and wondering why I am eating so slowly. That in turn makes me nervous and probably not chew as well as I should. Last night I was finding dinner hard to get down and got a mild stuck feeling. Got over that but then my daughter made some comment which made me laugh/choke and swallow all at the same time. Ended up rushing to the bathroom where I managed to PB - yuck. Painful and revolting not simple and easy like some people have described. That was the end of me trying to eat . I'm also wondering if it was my eating technique or the actual food. I was eating mince, rice and green beans. All foods I have eaten since this fill and not had problems with. But as many have said the band can be fickle so maybe it was what and now how I was eating. I know rice is a common problem food. -
Thanks for explaining that.

They are allowed because they dissolve before they get to the stoma. Just be careful though - they are very high in fat( even the so called low fat ones are very high cal) and it is easy to eat a lot of them!

I am not 100% sure but i think slipping upwards is the way that it normally happens.

I find it incredible how much fill levels differ and how totally different people can feel from them. I have had 3 fills.Currently sitting on 2.3ml in 10ml band. Since I got the 3rd fill a week ago I have been getting stuck a lot more and had my first PB yesterday. Yuck! I definitely have to learn how to eat properly and what I can eat. Its amazing as this is less than some people have for their first fill!

Just been doing some reading over at the VSG board . From what I read it appeared that some of the issues banded people experience can also be experienced by sleeved people. The one which surprised me was that sleeved people can also get that stuck sensation and have to bring food back up as it won't go down. I thought this was a problem with the band that wasn't experienced with the sleeve and that it was due to the small stoma that the band creates. So why do sleeved people have this problem as well. Can someone please explain for me. Thanks

Is this normal eating after being banded?
elcee replied to wantitband's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Baked potato. I think that may have been the cause of my first PB yesterday. Not sure - it could have been the chicken. All I can say is it felt so awful there is no way I would want to do it every day! -
Apparently it helps to digest Protein. I bought some recently at a GNC shop and tried it for the first time last night. I had that stuck feeling after eating some chicken and veggies - not sure what was stuck. They are chewable tabs that taste like papaya. If you like papaya they are OK - personally the smell of papaya has always reminded me of vomit. I chewed one and nothing much happened. Waited , still had lots of pain. Decided to take a mouthfull of Water. About 5minutes later I PB'd (my first). Don't know if the papya helped or not. Having now experienced a PB I cannot believe how easy some people make it sound. When it was first explained to me it was as though you just burp and the food comes back up - I wish. It was very painful and with all the slime it was almost as bad as normal vomiting.Have to try harder not to let it happen again!

Apparent allergic reaction to surgical glue
elcee replied to knwitham's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome to the club! Most of the adhesives make me really itchy, although I was quite lucky i didn't have too many issues postop probably as i prewarned them so they must have used a hypoallergenic type. -
Greek yogurt is more satisfying because of the fat content. it is very rich and creamy. obviously the fat content could be a problem. A l/f or n/f variety sounds great but I can't see how it would then ne any more satisfying than regular l/f yogurt.

HELP!!!Overfill and still not able to reach restriction!!
elcee replied to lbhope2009's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am shocked at the way that you have been filled.Info that I have read states that being filled too quickly causes problems such as slippage.See info below from another website. I am also wondering if what you are expecting to feel is different to what the doctors expect us to feel. I am still very new at this but I have read that we should not be expecting to feel full as we did previously. Instead we should be aiming for satisfied. Try eating the recommended amount and then stopping and working out if you are still hungry. Not hungry is a lot different from full. This is whatIi have been doing and it works. If I had to eat until I felt full I am sure I would be overeating. The risk of slippage is also increased by: Not emptying the balloon during surgery. Filling the band too early. Introducing solids too soon into the diet. Eating excessive quantities and overfilling the small pouch Having the band too tight and not allowing food to pass steadily through the opening into the lower pouch. -
i didn't get to celebrate...:-(

Surgery on the same day as your spouse??
elcee replied to DB1119's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would think that the main consideration is transport to and from the hospital. So long as you have that sorted you should be OK. Plus with children you may need someone to help drive them around for the first couple of days. -
I drove the day after. It was only to the school busstop and back but I felt fine. At first when I asked the Doc he said this could be a bit early but to go ahead so long as I felt fine. I drove as soon as possible after my 2 caesars as well and had no problems. I went back to work about 6 days after the LB surgery and had a round trip of 90km. I felt fine.I think the main thing is to only do as much as you are comfortable with. I also have an automatic car so that may make a difference.

Just proves there is a good and bad side to everything. Fat fills out wrinkles but I'd still rather be slim its a lot healthier! I have noticed that the skin on my neck seems to be saggier but that has to be better than extra chins. How many times have people said that the band will not be the last surgery. Well maybe they are right - we need to save so that we can afford the plastic surgery as well. On my wish list so far mini face lift and boob job.I am sure hubby will be happy with the latter.

I can't keep anything down..I'm freaking out.
elcee replied to MichelleBee's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
These sound like classic symptoms of being overfilled. Don't leave it as it can lead to all sorts of problems including a slip. Go back and get some fill out. you need to be able to eat proper food for the band to be able to work properly. -

FDA: The Low-Carb Diet Is 'Sheer Nonsense' - The Common Voice
elcee replied to Alex Brecher's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have so many books , all based on scientific research , telling me that the particular diet they are promoting is THE ONE. But of course none of them are. What Jacqui has said is so true. It's all about balance. Totally excluding whole food groups and overeating others is not healthy and is extremely difficult to follow for life. Starting to eat food that our great grandparents would recognise as food would go a long way to solving a lot of problems. Yes they had overweight people in those days but far fewer and they weren't as overweight as they are now. For every scientific study that argues and proves a point there is one that contradicts it. How about some of the scientifically proven facts and theories from previous years.eg Acid Rain Babies should not sleep on their backs as they will choke. They should be put on their stomach, then it was their side, now it is their back as this apparently helps prevents SIDS. Solids should be introduced to babies at 6 weeks, currently I think it is 6 months. There used to be a go to work on an egg campaign , then eating more than 2 eggs per week was bad for you and now apparently we can eat them every day again. I could go on and on and on. I am just waiting for them to finally admit that man made global warming is not true. We have it shoved down our throats all the time but a lot of the so called scientifically proven facts regarding global warming are not true/haven't been proven. Oh and just to get really controversial I have read some really interesting studies from some esteemed scientists that say that raised cholesterol is not related to heart disease. That the cholesterol myth was invented by the drug companies so that they can sell their drugs to a huge percentage of the population on an ongoing basis! -
This Freakin band is working

Wow Rusty that's impressive with no fill. How did you do it? Did they prefill at the time of surgery? -
Like to know how many might like this idea for a forum area...
elcee replied to Albacheeser's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes it's a good idea. We do have a couple of off topic areas but they seem to be aimed at rants and raves more than fun stuff. I think there is an LBT suggestions forum. Maybe you should post your idea there as I think that is the area that Alex looks at. -
Protein, Protein, Protein...
elcee replied to Cherishthepast's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In the USA protein seems to be the answer to everything. Tiredness could also be from a lack of complex carbs and fruit/veg. You need to get all the required vitamins & minerals and if you are not that can also make you tired. -
That sucks. I find it amazing the way no-one takes responsibility and that you are expected to just dig deep in your pocket the whole time. I am so glad that I don't have to deal with that kind of medical system. Hope they find out what's wrong and that everything gets sorted.

Sounds like a typical heat /sweat rash.

Interesting info on causes of slippage and other problems
elcee posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I found this info on another Dr's website and thought it was really interesting. Here is the address if anyone would prefer to read the entire article. Laparoscopic Gastric Banding, Lap Band Adjustable Obesity Surgery for Morbid Obesity, Sydney Australia (Please note this is not my Dr and I am not advertising)! After reading this I find it amazing how many people appear to be overfilled and happy about it.Yes it might be great to lose weight quickly but it is not healthy and can cause all sorts of problems. Slippage of the Band & Pouch dilatation (4.75% in my series) Research has shown that the higher the placement of the band, the lower the risk of slippage. This technique is known as the pars flaccida approach as the band passes through the fatty pad on the back wall of the stomach and is fixed in place by the body tissues. In the technique of passing the band through the lesser sac, the risk of slippage is increased. Careful tunnel formation with 4-5 sutures over the front surface of the band, significantly decreases this problem. The problem of slippage is, however, small. Slippage causes the pouch to enlarge and the stoma to drain poorly. This results in severe reflux and vomiting. The band has to be opened by a laparoscopic technique and the stomach pulled back down through it or the band can be removed ands placed at a higher level. It is then resutured into place. This can be a complex procedure although it sounds simple. It carries a higher risk of perforating the stomach as the plane behind the stomach is adherent to the diaphragm with dense scar tissue making it difficult to open this plane to insert the band. Another option is to remove the band and replace it at a later stage. -
Adjusted fill total - now I'm confused
elcee posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I went for my 3rd fill today and I left feeling totally confused. It wasn't done by my surgeon but someone else on his team . 1st fill . 1.5ml 2nd fill. 1.ml 3rd fill .6ml So the total should be 3.1ml right? She drew what was in there out today before putting it back in and now my total is apparently 2.3ml. I was very confused and concerned that this meant I have a leak but she assured me that I haven't, that this is the adjusted total as they don't pull all the Fluid out. Would anyone like to explain for me in simple terms what an adjusted fill is? I was also surprised she put so little in as I have been struggling since the last fill 4 weeks ago but she told me I have lost 2kg (4.4lb) and that is really good!!! She even told me that we need to go slowly as I am close to what I should be. Not sure how she works that out - my BMI is still in the overweight range.
