Stuck for the 1st Time...Pork Chops are NOT my friend!
elcee replied to ~amy~'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Horrible feeling isn't it.Especially the first time - it feels like you're having a heart attack. Being stuck though can be compared to falling off a horse. They always say that the best thing to do is get straight back on. I'm not saying you should go and eat another pork chop but I don't think you should cross pork off your list for ever.Next time try a different cut or pork cooked in a different way e.g slow cooked. If you cross a food off your list every time it gets stuck or makes you PB you will soon find there is nothing left that you can eat! Even my favourite Breakfast food (egg on toast)that I eat practically every day has got stuck on occassion. Sometimes the band is fickle! -
I just read in a magazine that sleeping on your left side helps prevent reflux. So it seems that my husband's snoring is not all bad! I nearly always sleep on my left side as that is the position that puts me furthest away from him and his noisy snoring! At this stage I have not had a problem with reflux!

In need of veggie ideas
elcee replied to MrsShannonDennis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you really don't like veggies the easiest thing to do is what we do when we are trying to get kids to eat them. Grate them and add them to sauces, casseroles, lasagnes, meat loaves etc. I add grated carrot, zucchini, green and red peppers etc to things like lasagne all the time. -
For all you veterans or close to a year post-op!
elcee replied to MrsShannonDennis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first part (daily eating habits) is easy. Breakfast Poached egg on wholegrain toast or greek yogurt + muesli lunch Wrap or toasted sandwich or crackers with tuna/meat/cheese + salad veg dinner Meat/chicken or fish + veg + carb. Snacks include fruit(which I am trying to eat more of),yogurt, nut bar, slice of cold meat/cheese. The second part - why do I want to lose more is probably a lot harder to answer. One of the reasons I am sure is that having been on a diet for a huge part of my life it is hard to accept that I am fine and that I no longer need to diet. Also when we look in the mirror we tend to focus on our bad parts not the good ones. I see my stomach and that is what I would still like to lose.Unfotunately we cannot choose where we lose the weight. If I keep dieting my already skinny legs will just get skinnier and my stomach will probably remain proportionately large. The only solution is probably a tummy tuck and that is something I can't afford. I am probably the only person that notices my stomach because everyone else that I know always comments on how skinny I am.I don't think I am. So the mental adjustment required when reaching "goal" is actually quite big and its not something that a lot of us are able to do easily. I don't think I will ever stop obsessing about my weight - I still hop on the scales every morning! -
There is a whole thread on this topic that was started a couple of days ago. Search for it(I'm not sure how to do a link) - I am sure you will find it interesting reading.

For all you veterans or close to a year post-op!
elcee replied to MrsShannonDennis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm one year post op and i'm no longer losing. But I think that is because my body has found its goal. I would probably like to go a bit lower but to do that would mean eating lots less exercising lots more and I'm not sure that is something that I am comfortable with. I seem to have reached a point where i can saty happilly. Sometimes plateaus do go on for quite a long time but I am sure if you keep doing what you are doing the scales will start dropping again. 1700 cals a day for weight loss actually sounds way too high to me but then I suppose you are doing a lot of exercise! Maybe you should have a couple of days rest and see if that shocks your body into losing again. And eat different foods. Sometimes when we eat the same stuff everyday it has an affect. Don't give up , you are doing great. -
Surgery can be hell. It affects people differently.Once the pain starts diminishing and your energy levels return you will start feeling better and will be so glad that you did this. It is amazing when that ugly fat starts coming off and staying off. Are you only allowed Clear liquids. Maybe you should call the Dr's office and check. I found being able to eat Soup made me feel heaps better - they got rid of the post surgery nausea that I was suffering from. Even if your Dr is out of town if you call the office they should be able to advise you.

Glad it's your port - that's a lot less serious. The other thing that may have happened is that you may somehow have torn some of the stitches. Maybe you worked out harder or differently to usual. I would take some painkillers, rest and call your surgeon as soon as you can. Hope it gets better soon.

Glad that you are no longer in this toxic friendship. I think it's terrible that you put off doing what is best for you based on what someone else thought. We have to look after ourselves because if we don't no-one else will.

When can I stop measuring 4 oz.?
elcee replied to Sweet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The drinking guideline is a minimum rather than a maximum. If you are thirst drink - it's not going to do any harm. -
What is hurting is it your band or your port? If it is your port it may be that it is pressing on a nerve or something like that. If this is the case you will probably need to have it repositioned. Generally we don't feel the actual band. If it is your band and if it has slipped this can sometimes be fixed by having a complete unfill for a couple of weeks. If it is a really bad slip then you may need surgery to reposition or replace it. With a slip there are normally other symptoms such as inability to eat/keep food down, bad reflux etc. So where exactly is the pain and do you have other symptoms. If you are in a lot of pain then you are going to have to do something. The best thing to do first would be to call and discuss it with your surgeon.

I agree. I was well prepared and knew what to expect. I had been well educated by my surgeon and nutritionist, had read lots and lots of threads here and also got info from my in person support group. Funny lots of people on this forum talk about knowing what is best for them, how they know their bodies etc etc but then they happilly submit to major surgery without doing proper research beforehand! Surely we all have to sit up and take responsibility as well. I actually don't mind posts where the people are venting and saying how hard it is. We all need an outlet and for some of us this is the only one. Many people decide to keep their surgery secret so this is where they share. The ones that annoy me are the ones that seem to know nothing.I find that hard to believe, particularly as the process in the US to get insurance approval seems to be long and arduous.I would have thought that the waiting period was more than enough time to find out a bit about what they should expect. E.G I had surgery 10 days ago, I'm still on liquids and I'm so hungry. I've read about bandster hell but didn't realise how bad it would be.................... does not annoy me E.g I had surgery 10 days ago, I'm still on liquids and can't understand why I have only lost 10lb does annoy me E.g I had surgery 2 days ago. I'm really hungry so I just had a Big Mac and chips- do you think I've done any harm... Annoys the C@@p out of me.

An Honest Question....
elcee replied to sixtythreenova's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
solid food stays in your pouch longer and therefore keeps you full for longer, liquids pass through quickly so you get hungry quickly and you eat more. As NYC said a liquid or mushie diet is nether fun nor sustainable in the long term -
I'm about to burn out?.
elcee replied to MissMelissa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1400 calories a day may be too much for you especially as you have already lost weight. As we lose we need less calories to maintain than previously so in order to keep losing calories need to be cut further. So I would suggest either eating less or doing some kind of higher intensity exercise that will burn more calories . -
I don't think you are eating enough and I don't think that what you are eating is very healthy. You seem to be eating a lot of cheese which is a high fat food(even the lower fat varieties) and it is not the kind of food that fills and keeps you full. You would be better off eating lean meat/chicken/fish plus some vegetables and even a small portion of carbs if required.

How do you get all of your protein in?
elcee replied to Lch8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just eat normal food - no protein shakes.I have no problems getting in adequate protein especially as lots of food that you don't consider to be protein foods also contain protein.e.g 2/3 cup of oats has 4g protein,1 slice of bread has 2g etc. -
You must never be afraid and embarassed to see your Dr. They are not there to judge they are there to help.make that appointment and get your journey back on track. You are not a failure - you have lost plenty so far and once you get the help you need you will start losing again.

Low Carb or Low Fat...which is better?
elcee replied to amey_idaho's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Difficult choice. It depends on the type of carb or fat as well. All fats have the same cal but certain types of fat are supposedly bad - saturated fats, trans fats whilst others are good. Also low fat products are often as high or higher in calories as the fat that has been removed has been replaced with sugar. One example of this is yogurt.Often the low fat has as many cal as the standard variety. I would far rather eat full fat greek yogurt than the low fat varieties. The greek stuff is thick and satisfying whereas the low fat stuff is watery and leaves you still hungry. Then there is the debate about how foods that have been artificially sweetened can actually make you fatter. I can't remember the science behind this but it has something to do with the insulin response. The best way to go is probably to eat a balanced diet consisting of foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Choosing lean cuts of meat, removing excess fat and satisfying your sweet tooth with fruit rather than manufactured products. And if it comes down to a choice between butter or marg then eat whichever you prefer the taste of! -
Do you know where your band sits? It is a lot higher than most people realise. It sits at the top of your stomach/bottom of your oesophagus which is approx between your breasts. We typically think our stomach is a lot lower than this. You get stuck if the food item is too big/not chewed properly or sometimes the texture can be a problem e.g too fibrous.

All the comments above are very valid and yes people do come here for reassurance and validation but it is still frustrating to read the same thing over and over again and to have to type the same answers. It would be good if there was a section on this forum that you had to read before joining that explained all the basics. Either that or an FAQ section (one of my ex bosses always said FAQ stood for f**ing awful questions)! It appears that people do not read older threads before starting one of their own. I also find it extremely scary the lack of information that some people appear to have been given but as Betsy said it is possible that they have just mentally blocked all this info out. What does tend to happen though is that a lot of the older more experienced bandsters seem to drop out. Yes it may be because they are now comfortable with their bands and no longer in need of the constant interaction on the board but I believe that a lot of them drop out because they get frustrated with reading and answering the same thing over and over. There are very few people here that have been banded for any great length of time that still help and support. Jachut of course is the exception so we had better make sure we don't scare her off!

Weight gain is fairly normal. Most people's weight fluctuates up and down by a couple of pounds. It is usually to do with hormones, Water retention or the like. As to the lip, it could be an allergy, or maybe an insect bite, or you walked into something, someone hit you, you could have a cold sore coming................................... basically it could be anything! Sorry i'm not much help!

Divorce/Split Rates post lap band
elcee replied to Me3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
And I thought all men wanted their wives/partners to have bigger breasts! Can't believe how selfish some of your partners are.I don't think I would have lasted this long with behaviour like that. The tree would already be growing over the hole in the garden! Good job some people have patience. -
Relax Firstly I am sure that the nurses comment about prefilling the band because the surgeon couldn't get the band tight enough was incorrect. As a nurse she probably knows very little about the band and told you what she thought you wanted to hear. Secondly there are a number of surgeons out there that routinely prefill the band. It is not generally recommended as the fill on top of the surgery and swelling etc can cause problems. You are lucky in that you don't seem to have had problems but it has had the effect of taking away your hunger. Lucky you, you seem to be missing out on bandsters hell. Don't worry how many ml you have left that can be filled - you will at some point achieve restriction. In fact I am not sure why you are worried as you seem to have achieved a level of restriction already so you have a leg up on those of us that were not prefilled. You need to be careful about not getting fixated on numbers. Lots of people seem to be obsessed with how much fill is in their bands rather than listening to how their body feels. As you were only banded on 7th June you should still be in the liquid phase of your diet - you should not be attempting to eat foods that require chewing at this point. Weakness is quite common as you have a far lower calorie intake than you are used to, you have just had major surgery and a general anaesthetic - all of which have an effect. Make sure you keep your fluids up, drink Protein shakes,veggie/fruit juice and if you are allowed Soups make well blended runny vegie soups with lentils or pulses added for extra protein. These things should help you to start feeling a bit better. And if you are still concerned then ask to speak to your SURGEON directly so that he can put your mind to rest. too much research on the internet can be a dangerous thing. Hope you start feeling better soon and please stop worrying - I am sure everything is fine.

One of the guys at my support group went on a 3 month world cruise last year and lost weight! He was the only person that wasn't complaining that his clothes had shrunk - his were getting bigger.
