How much is too much wgt loss?
elcee replied to losingwgt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If the BMI were to be under 18.5 then I would regard the person as having lost too much weight as 18.5 is the lower end of normal and a weight below this could indicate problems. Nb. It does depend on which BMI table you use though as even these seem to differ slightly! -

However I looked at the ticker at the bottom of the OP's post and it showed a BMI of 25.3. This is definitely in the normal range. -
Mashed Potatoes and Eggs?
elcee replied to craigmorganfan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It depends on how you cook your scrambled egg. Some people make them very dry and then it can be hard to eat them. If you cook them so that they are just cooked and still really soft they should be fine. Fried eggs obviously have a higher fat content and the skin that forms when they cook can cause problems.I fry mine in a tiny bit of Water - a sort of cross between poached and fried and they are normally fine to eat(but probably noot at mushy stage) HTH -

Slider foods are foods which are high calorie , low in nutrition and go through the band easily so you are able to eat a lot more than you should as the band does not restrict them.e.g chocolate icecream Cookies milkshake etc Some foods go down easily but they are not considered sliders as they are high in nutrition.e.g yogurt

Another boring to fill or not to fill question...
elcee replied to LapNYC's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You know the saying:- "if it ain't broken don't fix it". I would say that applies here. If you are comfortable where you are,can still eat healthily and are losing then you probably don't need the fill. Even if your loss has stalled it does sound as though it is only temporary. I would be inclined to move my appointment forward a couple of weeks. -
I think you are expecting too much. I don't know of any Dr's who do care calls - usually they are way too busy. It is normally the patients responsibility to phone the Dr and follow up on results etc. In a perfect world it would be the other way around! I do think though that they should be able to schedule a fill and a checkup for the same day.

Are you satisfied with "Average" weight loss???
elcee replied to bambam31's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I remember going for a fill and the extremely skinny fill Dr trying to put me off having a fill as she did not think I needed to lose any or much more weight! She then did a calculation which showed that I was successful as I had lost 90% of my excess. I was not impressed to say the least.I did not go through the process of being banded to remain overweight. She did give me a fill and I have now lost all my excess weight and am sitting well within the normal range.I would actually love to lose some more but am now finding it hard to find the motivation to do so.Why would I want to lose more? This is why. I still have a roll on my stomach(fairly big) and I agree with Jacqui that this means I have more to lose. The problem is that the weight doesn't come off where you want it to. I am constantly being told that I have skinny legs, my daughter tells me I have no bum and my boobs are definitely now on the small side! So how do I lose the stomach without the other parts getting even smaller? -
Will this really work for???
elcee replied to zeniada's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Not bad gcruz. You have made a total of 3 posts and 2 of them are on this thread advertising your Dr. Zenaida I suggest you ignore these posts as this poster may be being paid to promote his/her DR. As to whether the band will work for you then I am sure it will. Prior to surgery we all have doubts - this is perfectly normal. But so long as you follow your Dr's instructions there is no reason why you too shouldn't be successful. -
We have such a warped perception of what weight is/isn't normal these days that we fear that we will look too skinny at normal weight. Regardless of how tall you are you will not look even close to a bag of bones at the top end of the normal weight range scale. However if you are comfortable being overweight then that is your choice. Personally I would not go through the whole process of being banded just to get to overweight. Why aim for mediocrity? Congrats on you progress so far.

Sounds to me like your band is way too tight. You should get back to the Dr ASAP and get some fill taken out. The problem is that it seems that you have been too tight and known that you were too tight for a while. Being too tight causes all sorts of problems and can lead to you losing your band . Hopefully no irreparable damage has been done.

Not sure who the ridiculous one is here. Lets imagine a scenario. Someone has a life threatening heart condition. In order to save their life they have surgery. They decide after the surgery they they don't really like the surgeons instructions and realise that they know better than their qualified surgeon so they decide to do things their own way. They can't see any bad effects to the way that they are doing things so they carry on doing things their way. Further down the line they start having issues and blame the surgeon because he was obviously the one at fault. They end up having to have more surgery............. Who would you call ridiculous in this situation? Why is it any different when it is WLS surgery? Yes there are probably lots of people that have cheated but that doesn't mean that it is the right thing to do or that it won't cause problems further down the line. If you are having major issues sticking to the diet then call your surgeon and see if he is happy for you to advance the diet. You just trusted him with your life so you should continue at this stage of the healing process to trust him (or her). This stage of the diet is hard - we know as we have all been there, but it is only for a limited amount of time which makes it a lot easier.Imagine how great you will feel once this period is over and you managed to get through it.

I think a slight unfill is in order. The fact that you have recognised that you are choosing sliders means that you are too tight. The band is designed to work with normal healthy food not easy to eat sliders. Being too tight can lead to all sorts of problems and if you get into a habit of eating sliders you may start gaining weight as typically they are high cal and easy to eat a lot more of.

OMG - that is really aggressive. I assume that you must have a realize band and not a lapband as generally people need more fill in those to feel restriction.

I found the op to be fine. Not much pain what I did have was handled by the meds. I had some post op nausea but this went when I was allowed to eat soup(homemade). I think my body needed real food rather than the sweet horrible Meal Replacement stuff. Eating post op has been fine. You have to make sure you follow your Dr's instructions and do not advance the post op food stages before you should. It is amazing how good mushy food tastes after a couple of weeks of liquids. I haven't had any major problems. I lost weight fairly steadily for the first couple of months, it eventually petered out and has now stopped completely but that's fine as I am at "goal". If you want to pm me I am more than happy to answer any other questions you may have. Living just outside Ballarat it's not always that hot either especially now as it's winter and pretty horrible! -
I understand you wanting feedback from the tool to know that it is working. But you need to be aware that being stuck doesn't happen because you ate too much or the wrong thing. Sometimes it can happen on the very first bite. And the worst thing when you get stuck is that you are normally still hungry. You just can't eat anything. You may also find that what you consider to be the wrong foods eg bread may not get stuck at all. Often it is the healthy ones that cause problems, chicken, lean meat even ground beef, some kinds of veggies etc. Generally the foods which are really "wrong" go down best of all! Also be aware that there is a difference between being stuck and having eaten enough. That is probably what you are or should be aiming for. The feeling that you get that if you eat another bite then it is all going to come back up.

Can I starve the children?
elcee replied to MollyRN's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could always cook them food that you don't like. -
Why can't you get enough water, you should have no trouble drinking? Even with almost ideal restriction I can drink fairly quickly.

It comes down to calories in - calories out. If you eat more than you expend you will gain or not lose weight. You also have to remember that just because something has the word healthy in it's name it doesn't mean it is. Snacking is something that you need to try and get away from. Ideally with a band we should be able to eat 3 small meals a day and be satisfied. Many of us can't manage that so we do snack, however the trick is to plan your Snacks, make sure that they consist of healthy food that is full of Vitamins, nutrients and include them in your total calories for the day.CONSTANT snacking is a definite No NO. I think you also need to examine the reasons you are eating. Is it because you are hungry or is it because you are stressed, bored, emotional etc etc. We need to find ways of dealing with non hungry eating as that is the type of eating that sabotages weight loss. In answer to your question about eating habits yes I snack. I try not to do it constantly and I try to make healthy choices - a nut bar, yogurt, tin of tuna, fruit etc. I am no longer actively trying to lose weight as I am at goal so I am a bit more lax than if I was still trying to lose. The rest of my diet consists of healthy food. healthy because it is processedby me from fresh ingedients not because it is in a box in a supermarket and has the word healthy on it! If you are really struggling with non hungry eating you may benefit from seeing a food pshycologist.

Lets just clarify something. Getting stuck is not something you aim for , it hurts like hell and is very unpleasant. You should aim never to get stuck although once you are banded it is hard to avoid altogether. It usually happens because you have taken too big a bite, not chewed properley, eaten too fast or maybe eaten a food that on that particular day does not agree with you. It in no way speeds up your weight loss.In fact people that are too tight often resort to eating high cal slider foods that make them gain weight.
-
getting stuck is more likely to happen after you have had a couple of fills.prior to this most foods will go down without a problem.
-
Mashed veggies are great. Mashed potato or carrot or pumpkin or whatever. Don't mix them keep them seperate so that you can taste what you are eating. I also ate things like tuna lasagne. It is very soft and qualifies as a mushy and you don't need to blend it up - that would just be gross.

I don't know what the rules are in the UK. In Aus you can get the procedure if you are obese so BMI 30 or over. It is doubtful that the NHS would pay for your procedure but as a private patient I am sure there are plenty of Dr's that would be willing to help. You may even want to consider going to Europe -I believe a lot of Brits go to Belgium. I think the Dr they use is Chris De Bruyne. There is a whole thread on him if you look it up. I got banded with a BMi just under 32 and it is the best thing I ever did. -
1 Year Out- Still Loosing Hair
elcee replied to KimberleyTX's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You may be deficient in some vitamin or mineral especially if you are sticking to the high protein regime. Also pony tails can cause stress and hair breakage so that may be contributing to the problem. -
How much weight did you lose up to your 1st bandiversary?
