What do you wish someone had told you BEFORE your surgery?
melliecat replied to Jennerator's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I remember a guy at the required pre-meeting who had a lapband a year ago and was still heavy. What a loser, I thought. Well here is the truth, it is possible and even EASIER to gain weight with the band by eating slider food. you still need a DIET to lose weight-a protien heavy healthy diet to lose. The band will not MAKE you lose weight, it will only HELP you eat less of dense food. NOT A MAGIC BULLET. There, although if I knew this before, I would have still done the band and thought it would be easy. ITS NOT EASY, JUST LESS HARD -
So scared and worried/HELP!!!!!!
melliecat replied to heyred1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
actually, you are paying him, so you dont need to explain, if you were perfect, you wouldnt need the band in the first place. go into this confident and expecting him to help you with a fill. you will get what you need, just be strong. Glad to hear all is ok now. -
I would just like to run this scenario by you guys and get opinions. I had my 4th fill on November 23rd and was very very tight. I decided to try and wait to see if I get loose at the 2 week mark as usual. Right now, being over 2 weeks and I still cannot eat anything but mushies and crap food (ice cream, etc). Even with ice cream, I cannot eat much before I feel like throwing up. I have tried grinding up meat, and even that I cant get down. I did an experiment, and with ground up chili, I could only eat 2 oz before I got pain in my chest. I am going today for an unfill (small). Is that what you would do? oh, and I have stopped losing weight because I am eating all the wrong stuff, thats all that will comfortably go down. Opinions welcome, although I will cry if you slap me (verbally) thanks!

anyone have PCOS-polycystic ovarian syndrome?
melliecat replied to Just Banded's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Yes, I have it and have suspected I had it for years. Gained over 100 lbs in a years time 10 years ago. Doctors just kept treating the symptoms with meds, the hbp, high lipids, depression, etc. Finally I got properly diagnosed one month ago. My testosterone was over double what the dr says it should be. I have started on metformin. the endo dr says its almost impossible for me to lose weight with my hormones so out of whack. He also said it was a miracle I conceived twice and had 2 full term babies. I attribute it to going on a low low carb diet just prior to each pregnancy. Hopefully between the lb surgery and the meds for insulin resistance (pcos) the weight will finally start dropping. good luck to all who are trying to conceive with pcos! -
hey kiddo, hang in there. try another adjustment and then do what I do, try doing protiens for a week to get some good weight loss. you might be motivated then. I am in the same boat, and I am just trying not to obsess about the number. smile!

please dont feel all alone, because I am in the same spot as you. Banded in June 2009 and have been breaking up and getting back together with the same 5 pounds for two months. Right now I am very tight with a recent fill, but I know it will loosen up within 2 weeks, so I dont want to un-fill. I will say, before going and giving up, make sure your bloodwork is all Kosher, because I found out I am pcos and need some meds. The doctor even admitted that it would be very hard if not impossible to lose with pcos. And my 2 cents, you already have the thing in, get filled, get some restriction and give youself 6 months. If you dont lose a pound a week in that time, then think about the alternatives. But what do I know, I love cake icing and will steal it off your plate when your not looking  hugs

Hi; I have tried multiple times to get the horizon bc/bs reps to send me the policy and requriements for bariatric surgery and have gotten nowhere. Here is a link to the application the doctor fills out, and lo and behold, there are the requirements. Happy surfing... http://www.horizon-bcbsnj.com/SiteGen/Uploads/Public/horizon_bcbsnj/pdf/3684.pdf

Does anyone else do this? Just one last bite and then you turn into that guy from Monty Python, have one more mint and explode? I think I have a time delay and I always seem to take just that one bite too many. I may explode soon...

Hi Everyone! thanks for reading my post. I can eat certain things fine and in copious quantities, like Cereal, soft veggies, fruit, crackers. Anything like chicken, bread, soft carbs-rice, etc. get stuck after 1 or 2 bites, and I am throwing up. Drinking makes it worse. What am I doing wrong here, or is this a case of avoiding the foods that make me sick? I know I need to slow down more, but is there anything else? I have had 2 fills since my surgery in June, and am at 3.7 cc in a 10 cc band. Maybe I have irritated the area and need to do soft/liquid for a couple of days? I am very confused, it feels like every meal is a roller coaster and I am not sure if it will go fine or if this is the time I will be hovering over the sink... thanks for any advice you have for me...

yes, I get dizzy if I miss just one dose of any SSRI, and prozac made me horribly agitated and I would guess you could call it psychotic. I have taken paxil, luvox, and most currently cymbalta and all have caused weight gain(increased appetite).

Hi I'm new here and very frustrated,
melliecat replied to marieveeee's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
ok, I know NJ is kind of a hike, but doable once a month. I go to Dr. Ewing in Paramus, NJ. The office is great and they do aggressive fills if you can tolerate it ever 4 weeks. Hope that helps. After all, it's your money, they should do what you ask, right? -
Getting Stuck Alot-Please Help.....
melliecat replied to melliecat's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Oh, here is the kicker, I am not losing any weight either. I started 2 weeks ago working out with cardio every day for 45 min to an hour, am not eating much but what I can get down and I have been f***ing around with the same 2 pounds every day-up/down. Very frustrating -
Just wondering how long it might take to see some weight loss results when you exercise. I exercising religiously every day for an hour, but nothing yet (still early). thanks

Hi! I was banded in june and have had one fill (2.5cc). My question is that when I eat a few bites, I get a sensation of being kind of stuck, that uncomfortable feeling in your chest. In a few moments, the food passes through the band and I can eat more, which I do until I am full. Right now I can eat about the equivalent of half a sandwich until I am full (slice of bread, mayo and meat). My question is, should stop eating when I get that first feeling? Does this happen to other people too? I guess I am confused between stuck/uncomfortable and full. I am not sure what full feels like now that I have the band. It is a very subtle feeling, if I can feel it at all. thanks for reading and any advice you can give to enlighten me is appreciated.

Can I have unprotected sex?
melliecat replied to Loving everyday's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ok, I think as a normal course of action surgeons do a bag of antibiotics right before surgery (mine did and all others I have talked to did). The answer to your question is that you are probably not protected. Use back up protection. -
Help!! pouch stretching?
melliecat replied to LisaMarie65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

People saying I'm too thin....need support
melliecat replied to mich85013's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Look them straight in the eye and say, "Bite Me." No, you can say "My doctor said my weight is perfect. I think he knows best." Then say bite me. -
Anyone ever heard of a band "exploding"
melliecat replied to cookiebaby's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I definitely think it might explode if you pump too much air into it from the bicycle pump. Always check the psi before you pump, then you are safe from exploding your band. "Believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear" -
flintstone v. centrum chewables
melliecat replied to volleymom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you may want to try the viactive chocolate, they come in multivitamin and calcium. I take after meals so its like a little dessert, very little. -
I have had panic attacks since grade school. For a long time they would come in cycles of months at a time. Here is some practical advice: your mind is making the panic attack. Our minds cannot think of two things at once (I know you think you can but its true, you cant). When you feel the panic coming on you shift your mind to something else, even if it is naming capitals, making a shopping list or thinking about the lyrics to a song. This will short circuit the panic attack pretty quickly to the point where you can handle it. Good luck, and remember, only expend energy on the things you can control, screw the rest.

Are you usually "on time" for work?
melliecat replied to TerriDoodle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I hate to admit this, but I am ALWAYS, like every day early by 20-30 minutes. I like the quiet time and hate when others are late. I am chronically on time, but once in a while I will be 5 min late for a social occasion. -
Hi! I am going on 1 week of "soft foods" and was wondering if you could let me know what foods you ate during this phase. All ideas are welcome. Some on the list from my doctor are: ground beef ground turkey cheese cold cuts eggs Soup Thanks!
