A dilemma, I have an overweight child...
OH Juli replied to LindaD's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm a week late to the party but I'm gonna chime in now. I have a six year old. She's chubby but there's a girl in her class who is heavier. I know, I checked, because I'm used to rating everyone by size and seeing where I fit in...but that's a whole different conversation. With my DD she knew I was having surgery because my stomach didn't work right. She was 5 at the time. I told her my stomach didn't tell my brain when to quit eating and it was making me unhealthy. I wanted to be healthier/thinner/better able to run around. I put her health in the context of doing things. Like if you are heavy it's harder to run. Running fast is fun. I think there is a place where you discuss consiquences of choices. Be it the choice to eat many sweets or the choice to hit your big sister. You can do it, but there will be consiquences and thinking before doing in any context is a good lesson. DD has gotten the message that fat=bad already. The other big girl in the class happens to be be MEAN too. My DD came home and said, "Josie (name has been changed to protect the innocent) is FAT and MEAN!" We had a conversation about if fat was good or bad and how we have fat people in our family who we love, and that Josie is in fact mean but it has nothing to do with being fat. DD is cute in that there are times that she says we shouldn't have this or that in the house because it won't help me in my quest to become thinner. But I also hate gender steriotypes where boys are strong and smart and girls are adorable. I try to use many adjectives to describe my daugther to my daughter that include smart, pretty, strong, brilliant, kind etc. You'll find your way. Hope my ramblings help. -
losing jusme's quest to the Minnie marathon
OH Juli replied to losingjusme's topic in Fitness & Exercise
LJM, Girl I had to hunt down this post just to see how you did. Fantastic job. Thanks for putting your dreams and goals out there for the rest of us to follow along. You're quite a testiment to how much a person can achieve if they want it. Your drive and determination are awesome. -
Thanks for the kind words, all of you. I think there's truth in the fact that it's not going to be like it was when it was new. And to look at the good side, there's knowledge I have and mistakes I don't need to make again. As for training for something, I do have a 105 mile bike ride I'm doing on Saturday, that's been a huge motivator for me but also my excuse for not getting a fill recently. I say, I want to fuel my body for those 6 hours of exercise. But Jahut, I'll call for a fill. I think after the ride, I shouldn't have that excuse. Also, I'm looking at changing gyms. Thanks. Change what you can and work with the rest, no? Again, Vic, smagll, T-bird, mary, Jahut, thanks for the gentle nods and understanding. Perspective is a good thing and nice to know one get some by asking others to take a peek. Juli

TX Congrats on the ride and Oweee on the tail bone situation. I can't wait to see pics! Of the ride that is, not of your tailbone. LOL! I know what you mean about keeping rides under 50 miles to have them be enjoyable. After this weekend I don't see me seeking out centeries or other super long rides. Frankly, 5+ hours in a day of doing any hobby just doesn't fit my schedule. But being able to say that I can do it is what's important! I love that you will continue to ride this ride for your MS Champ. That's a very cool thing. Your enthusiasm jumps off the screen, so you know you've got to love what you did. Awesome.

TOSRV might have to wait because apparently I'm trying to talk myself out of it in every possible way.... No, I'm sick. Throat hurts, coughing like mad, snotty. In general a raunchy cold. Ick! C-Glad you got out for a few minutes. HP- They are wellgo manufactured pedals. Not Shimano, but woot woot, they are good. B- Happy to see you here more often. SBG-As you can see we are quite a chatty group. We get a little crass at times, don't let it bother you. ZZ Where are you girl??? TX We want pics! BG I hope to God you are sleeping now. I'll catch up with you tomorrow. Night ya'll.

HP Good job on the ride in the wind. That's something! My co-worker told me he was out riding in it yesterday and went to grab something out of his back pocket only to be blown into a ditch! I'd believe it. When BG and I rode a few weeks back the wind was so bad I was afraid to let go of my handle bars to wipe my nose. My snot just had to go where the wind took it. 'Member that BG? Wendy we go by initals here. Whosyerdaddy was W, but most folks call him Whos or Daddy. W never stuck. Do you want it or would you like SBG, for SavedByGrace? Let us know.

I'm eating an 8 year old's nightmare for dinner. Harvard Beets and overcooked broccoli...nothing else, just not feeling it. BG, You poor dear. I rode all of a mile and a half today with DD. We stopped oh, 15 times to smell flowers, petty the neighborhood cat, etc. It was a chore. But I did clip in and out of my spds a few times. They are easier than egg beaters and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise! I'm happy for the change. And riding on the platform side while tailing the kiddo was sweet because I could just put my feet/foot down with out worry. I'm happy I switched. Peace out.

Wendy, HI! Getting out and riding is all that matters to this group. We are competing with each other. A mile or 10, a mountain bike or hybrid....it's just getting on a bike and riding that matters. I like Babygirl too started with very few miles, maybe three, and that's me being generous, but I can go for hours and miles at a time now. Come here and join in for all the cycling encouragement you can stand!

It's a beautiful day! I don't have any PRESSING homework and the kiddo wants to ride. I'm tired as can be though from her sleep over/carnival at work today. I figure I need to see about clipping in and out my SPDs so we just may well ride down to the park and back...ugh...my road bike on the sidewalk, it's so, so annoying. BG, Hell, they gave you medicine, you should be fine. Don't be a weenie. Ride. HA, you'll be giving me shit next weekend if I don't kick this bug that I have. TOSRV may have to wait.

share all you want. I have a giggle fest coming from my DD's room. It's going to be a long, long, long night.

Oh I've not registered for Lansing. I'm not registered for the Horsey 100 which is two weeks before that either! Note to self, register..... I'll be driving into and out of Lansing that day. No hotels for me. I think Alison will be along for the ride as well.
-
Yeah, I'm happy with my choices. Funny that your DH cares. very sweet. Can't wait to meet him and see you again. We he go to Lansing with you in June?

I'm sure the GF will be putting her time in at the pancake area too. I'm so GREEN with envy! I want pancakes, I want to ride, I want to be with Alison, I want to see BG...

I don't have to shop in the "plus size" section
OH Juli replied to ::tracy::'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I recently went to Macy's with a friend who has always been a size 20. She's like these are my two areas, pointing to the plus size...than with a giant sweep of her arm, she said, "That that out there is all yours to pick through!" I'm just now a snug 16 and an XL. But OMG, it still surprises me. I was looking at stuff in "her" area, going, that's cute, that's nice...and she kept reminding me that they were all to big for me. Holy cow. -
C I just put on hybrid pedals too. They are platform on one side and SPD on the other. I just bought some hybrid walk around cycle shoes to go with um too. It's a step backward from my Crank Bros egg beaters and Nike carbon road shoe, but a girl needs to do what a girl needs to do. BG, Alison said she'd be looking for you tomorrow. How jealous am I that you and my GF are on the same ride, and I am NOT?!

Central Ohio Get Together - May 10 2008
OH Juli replied to HeatherA's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Awe shucks. Yeah, the plan now is to only ride from Columbus to Portsmouth. I didn't have enough time to train to ride all 200 miles, up and back. But I'm pretty sure I can do 100 down. I'd never had guess this a year ago. -
So who is riding this weekend? Aside from TX, that is. I wish I was but I've got the kiddo plus its raining! Better this weekend than next because next is my century.

Who wants to play, “Worse place I’ve ever PBed” game with me? I know it will freak out the newbies, but I see the humor in the hard or embarrassing lesson learned. I’m not advocating weight loss by way of PBing, holy cow though do we have some crazy stories out there. Any takers? Here’s mine: A few weeks back I had an early flight. In the rush to get to the airport we passed on breakfast and coffee. Once we were situated in the concourse area of the airport I stood in a long line to get coffees, a muffin and a pecan roll. I thought I’d get the muffin, but my friend opted for it. So I was left with a pecan roll. What the heck I thought, I was HUNGRY, but then they started boarding the plane! I gobbled my food. They took my boarding pass let me walk down the thingy to get on the plane and I knew I was gonna hurl. There were people in front of me, and behind me. You know it is waiting to get your seat on a plane. I rooted around in my bag and found souvenir bag, emptied as fast as I could and urped right there. Whew. Got to my seat did it again with this poor stranger shoulder to shoulder with me. I tried to be dainty and discreet…but ugh. I feel pretty fortunate that I’m quick to PB when I error. There are some who agonize for hours before they get rid of the stuck food. So do tell. Give us your story.

Ohio Loves You!!!! That's fantastic. Traci, why do I need to be careful? Did I miss something? I'm just writing many many papers and Zoe's having a sleep over. My weekend should be pretty tame. TX and B, I'm thinking about a vacation to the Texas Golf this December. Is cycling decent in that area? What are the temps? Anything a girl should do??? I know, I can see stuff on Travel Texas. com...but I thought I'd see what you'd say. Is there gambling in the area? Do you even have clue? thanks,

TX, There's a children's show/book called Lola and Charlie which is very charming. They are brother and sister in London. And Lola says often, "ever so slightly just a little..." Like she is ever so slightly just a little scared to to go to school for the first time. We love, love, love Lola and Charlie and Fancy Nancy and newest in our book collection are Pinkalicious and Purplelicious...Nobody told me the books would be one of the best parts of having a new reader. I love the stories as much as she does. But back to your fill...You wouldn't know if you didn't try, right? Soon, soon. At least you'll be able to fuel your giant ride this weekend. Mornin' everyone else.
-
TX, That sucks shit. I'm sorry you're struggling. You'll get refilled soon, no? B, Good to know your ticker is in fine order. Get thee on thy bicycle! Shout out to the rest of you all. Sorry I'm being crass...but I'm ever so slightly just a little drunk.

I certainly eat more on the big the workout days. Not so much differently on a gym day. You'll want to eat about an hour or 90 minutes before you workout, and there are times afterward where you'll want eat something small....
-
My schedule varies quite a lot. This weekL: Saturday rode bike 20 miles Sunday rode bike 67 miles Monday nothing Tuesday run 3 miles Wednesday in the gym 30 minutes (slacker) Thursday run 3 miles Friday in the gym an hour Saturday/Sunday nothing. But I'm training to ride a 100 mile ride in two weeks. I'll back of the cycling after that and do more gym time.

That would put me at 52. It occurs to me though that a person born now would be 40 years my junior. Everyone, this comes from when we were riding and exhausted, I had been bemoaning my pending old age all weekend. At a stopping point, to said to BG, "One day when we are old, when I am 90 and you are 50, we will look back on this horrible day with fondness."
-
I heart you BG, even with the vast age difference between us.
