:confused:I have a question for anyone with type 2 diabetes and the lap band.... Since being banded and losing weight have you been able to control your blood sugars with diet & exercise alone and no more oral medications?? I heard that gastic bypass can resolve diabetes in a high percentage of patients because of the mechanical changes made in the anatomy causing hormonal changes in the stomach. I was just wondering if you can get the same result with the lap band. Thank you

that is very encouraging to hear. Thank you for your responses!!

cherg, Hi, I have not been banded yet so I cant offer any advice on the fills. I do agree with the other comments that you need to take care of yourself. I would suggest talking to your surgeon as well. I think talking to someone could help you through this. I have gone to a couple of OA (Overeaters Anonymous) meetings and have meet a few women who have under gone surgery also, but found old habits remained an issue for them and meetings and support within the program was helping them through it. Maybe looking into a local OA meeting might be beneficial to you? I wish you the best, take care of yourself! pier13

SOTC thread...Why NOT to post when your angry
pier13 replied to nursekathy2u's topic in Rants & Raves
Life is what we make it. Whether or not there is an actual influence in our choices or the outcome in our lives by God, who knows? But I guess the day will come for all of us to find out when it is our time to leave this plane for another, if there is another. Some people believe in God, some people believe there is no God. Who are any of us to argue with what the next person believes in? Is it good to believe in something greater than ourselves, I think so. Is there life after death, I do believe there is, and really hope I am right since my mom is there and I hold onto the belief we will see each other again. Whether or not I am right is irrelevant. It personally gives me comfort and that is what matters "for me". If you feel comfort with your belief in the lord, no matter how you see him or what you call him. Or if you feel comfort not believing there is a God, so be it. which ever you believe and is good for you, will see you through all of your obstacles and accomplishments in life and that is relevant. I think the real meaning behind the original post was a distaste for hate and anger and how it was being expressed (I missed whatever happened prior), but I have to agree. Because both hate and anger are wasteful and will rob us from joy that we deserve to feel. Since we are all on this lap-band board forum, I think we can all agree we have been robbed of joy for much too long due to our struggles with weight. Lets not waste anymore time with negativity and get on with all of your succsess stories, I know they bring me hope and bring me closer to my dicision to get banded. I also just wanted to share a quote with you all that I try very hard to live by, so here it goes: "Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it." -

A thread for super-sized bandsters - starting BMI over 50?

LapBandit.... your comment about the pain from having herniated disks and trying to exercise is the absolute truth. I am at a point were I just cant exercise and this is not a good place to be. Between severe asthma and my back it's horrible. I feel so much better knowing that there is hope for me yet and that it is possible to lose a lot of weight with the lap band. My body has been screaming at me with aches and pains for far to long now. I really want to start living again, just to be and feel healthy is my ultimate goal. thanks and best of luck to you all with your weightloss journey's :-) -

I have been thinking about the lap-band for years. Lately I feel confused as to the lap band or gastric bypass. I too am a big gun!!! At 5'4 and 314lbs. I have a list of medical issues due to my weight as well. The biggest problem is my back, I had surgery on it almost 2 years ago. I NEED to get the weight off my body BIG TIME!!! I was wondering if you think the lap band is a wise choice for someone my weight and is it realistic to think I could lose 150lbs with the lap band? looking forward to hearing your responses, thanks. -

I know how you feel. I cancelled my 1st appointment for the lap-band a couple weeks ago. I did start going to OA meeting, where I have met several people who have had huge wieghtloss success without surgery. That gives me hope! I have not shut the door on the lap-band, I just really need to give healthy eating and exercise an honest effort. I have many bad habits to break and new habits to learn when it comes to my relationship with food. I think OA will be very helpful whether I decide to reschedule surgery or not. There are people at these meetings who have had WLS but still needed more to reach there goals and the meetings are giving them that. Good luck to you in what ever you choose, I wish you the best!! -
I was looking to see if anyone has had their lap-band done at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston? What was your experience there and would you recommend this hospital? I have my first appointment at the end of june there. I have been looking around this forum for experiences at tufts, but have not come across any. I have read of experiences from other hospitals located in Boston. I am hoping to hear of some experience from Tufts. :girl_hug: Thanks!

I did foster care for several years and have two adopted children from two different families. One of my adopted children was a premie and also born drug addicted. Her birth mother was even high the day she gave birth to her. My "adopted" daughter was not breathing when she was born and she was put on oxygen therapy, phenobarbital and remained in the hospital for 2 1/2 months. Her birth father never visited and the hospital records said her birth mom visited only a couple of times. To make an extremely long and sad story short, my point is even after all of that and a 51A being filed on the birth family from the hospital. When the department of social services came out to investigate they allowed the baby to go home with drug addicted parents. The baby had alot of problems and needed visiting nurses, early intervention and medication, etc. Well not even 30 days later she was removed from the birth family, they had the police called on them because of a domestic disturbance (stabbing) over drugs. My point is even though the baby would be better off with your cousin,The system can tend to be messed up. I have a friend who has 2 of her cousins children ( same thing drugs) they signed custody in court over 2 1/2 yrs ago, the birth mother wants her kids back and if she plays her cards right she might really end up with them. It's really sad, the youngest of the boys is 3 he wouldn't even know his birth mother is she was in the same room with him. Since doing foster care I have huge issue with how long birth parents are given to straighten out. I had kids placed with me who had been in care for more than 10 yrs. These kids going from home to home. Their parents still not clean, but having weekly visits with their kids and they still refuse to sign over their parental rights. It's crazy, these kids dont even get the chance to have a permanent family to love, trust or call their own. Instead they grow up a child in the system. Most wont be adopted either because now they are older and everyone wants the younger kids or the babies. I know the ideal is for birth parents to be with their children (in a perfect world) and as parents we think I would never sign my rights over, we would fight to the end to keep our children. Well when you have a parent suffering from drug addiction, especially when the addiction is so bad they couldn't even stop for the baby growing inside them and this has caused damage to that baby then someone has to step up for these kids, They did not ask for this. I think it is a wonderful thing that your cousin is willing to take someone elses baby in as their own and is willing to put all the time and effort into a baby born drug addicted. Believe me it is work, work you love doing. So don't get down when someone sides with the birth parents and thinks being reunited is the answer. Alot of people are lucky and have not been in our shoes. When you love a child that a drug addiction has effected and may have even permanately damaged and not until then, can you understand why being reunited with birth parents is not always the answer.

I am from MA so I dont know if the laws are different. I would say when they first took the baby from SIL everyone should of went into court and SIL could of signed over custody in a day at the court. I don't think her writing that on the paper is gonna hold up so much from a legal point, now that she wants her baby back. I think that she could possibly get the baby back. child protected services will probably get involved and the birth mother might be given weekly visits and have to be drug tested. Hopefully your cousin is able to keep the baby at thier home if this is to happen. that way if the birth mother doesn't stay clean then her rights are terminated your cousin will have the option to leagally adopt the baby. I would have your cousin call a lawyer. I wish you the best with this situation.

Seminole, wow, thats great that you were able to have your surgery here. Will you always fly back to Boston for fills? How often do people get fills? I don't know much about the after care of the surgery.

Seminole, How are you feeling, are you in alot of pain? Thats really great you'll be going in for your fill soon. I wish you the best with your wieght journey. Keep us posted.

Diva, thanks, I am gonna stay on the boards so I can stay up to date with lap band news and everyone's stories. If this program "LA wieght loss" doesn't work. I will be making another appt at tufts, no dought about it. I have to really give it a go first on my own, then I will be secure in a decision for a future appointments for surgery if needed. thanks so much for all your support. Best wish to you with your up coming surgery, Please keep us posted with your success Oh ya, I have a question. the $500 due for the program what is that for exactly?? When I spoke to my ins company they said I was approved for both private and group behavioral therapy. My responsibility would be only my co-pay.

I have been thinking of getting the lap band for a few years. I finally made an appointment and my first visit is at the end of june. Ever since I made the appointment I have been really nervous and confused. One minute I am like this is crazy, its too drastic. What if I run into problems or die??? I can do this on my own! Then the next minute I am like if you could do it on your own you already would be thin and healthy. I don't know why I can't just eat healthy and move more? Will the lap- band be the tool I need? I think I am scared of losing control of what I can and cant eat. I only drink soda, coffee, and very little water. I have to drink while I eat. What if I wanted a beer, can you have a drink? I know that sounds foolish, especially since I rarely ever do, but I think it's the loss of having the choice to have one if I wanted too. I know I need to do something really soon. I have alot of health issues. I even had back surgery 1 1/2 yrs ago and until just recently I was feeling great. I have been on and off steriods for asthma for a year and have gained almost 30lbs this yr and my body cant handle it anymore. I am just afraid of making things worse if something goes wrong with the lap band surgery. I am also afraid of things getting worse if I don't have the surgery. I feel better knowing that some of you have experienced the same feelings and that I am not alone. I look forward to reading more posts of how the initial fear turns into hope and inspiration after surgery. I wish you all the best in your journey to good health
