calling the doc, going in to be seen!
LAN2k replied to hope4204's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know what you are going through. I pray that you get relief. -
3+ months post op and once again I am having trouble eating! I don't wake up hungry at all but manage to get in about 4oz of cream of wheat, I add protein powder to it. After that I'm basically full for the day and NOTHING appeals to me. I've lost my taste for all sweets even fruit. I don't know if it's because I just starting taking a new antidepressant drug Zoloft? I am really depressed and the lack of appeal for food has me worried. Any insights are appreciated.

I am hoping I can get some clarification about post surgery antacid administration. When I left the hospital my surgeon wrote a few scripts for me to have filled and told me to use Pepcid AC daily or as needed. I just went ahead and took the pepcid however the first time I got a taste of reflux, clearly the pepcid ac was not enough. At my next follow up visit I asked my surgeon if he would give me multiple prescriptions for different brand PPIs. I filled the prilosec and took one to two a day depending on need and found that I had an awful dryness of mouth, and tongue during sleeping hours. I contacted the doc and asked him if it was necessary for me to take a PPI daily and he said no, unless I was experiencing acid reflux. The acid reflux has (thus far) subsided and I have not been taking any PPI medication at all. Because so many here have been told by their surgeons to take this type medication some for 3 months, some even 6 I am beginning to wonder if I am putting myself at risk of getting ulcers. I also have scripts for protonix, nexium (both in generic form). I already have some weird sort of drip in my throat that I can't get to, (can't blow it out of nose nor loosen with gargle to spit or swallow). When I take the generic Klonopin (anti anxiety) I get "hyper-salivation" as a side effect...and I gag and dry-heave when brushing my teeth. Besides knowing if it is absolutely necessary to take a PPI daily, I'd really appreciate knowing from those of you who do take daily any one of these, if you suffer any sort of side effects. In other words I'm trying to assess which PPI would be best for me to take. I greatly appreciate your input. Thanks.

help in need of serious protein ideas
LAN2k replied to backtonew1's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I'm with you. In fact I can't take any artificial sweeteners either! I am not afraid of carbs like fruits and veggies but at 3 months out I still don't seem to have much room in there after eating protein first. -
How did you stock your fridge/pantry with for post op?
LAN2k replied to tennessee1031's topic in Food and Nutrition
I over stocked my pantry with so many things I could not tolerate after the surgery. One thing that I have been able to consistently able to eat is cream of wheat, I add a little of Jay Robb vanilla protein powder to it with a drop of pure maple syrup and some low fat milk. I drink vitamin waters since the surgery I have lost my taste for plain water. I stocked up on all the flavors I liked pre surgery and post surgery the only one I could tolerate is the tropical citrus. I ended up buying things like ricotta and cottage cheese but could not tolerate them either. I also bought a bunch of baby food and only ate a few jars of the fruit. It's hard to tell before the surgery what you will want to drink and eat since tastes change so drastically. At least mine did. I still can't eat fresh fruit it's just too sweet and I completely lost my taste for sweets. Hope this helped a bit. Wishing you smooth sailing all the way through. -
I too am awaiting answers to your questions. I do hope things here will pick up now that the holidays are over.

Norma I'm so sorry of your struggle with your knee. From everything I've read and anyone I know who has had knee surgery it does get better. I pray that you will have sustained relief each and every day and that very soon the pain will be a thing of the past.

The binder really helps! I saved mine from when I had an abdominal hernia repair where I was supplied one in that hospital. I was not given one where I had the sleeve surgery so I used the one I had and it's adjustable with velcro. It really helped me for the first couple of weeks out from surgery.

I just bought a 32oz bottle of "Liquimax Complete Nutrition Multi Vitamin Formula" from Costco. It's a one month supply, tastes good and was about $12.00. I have been taking the "petite" Citrical Calcium Citrate pills 2x per day. They all have some Vitamin D3 but I also take a seperate D 5000 IU's a couple of times a week. After I finish this bottle I might like to try what Tiffy is taking...GNC Solotron chewable with bioavailable iron twice daily.

Norma I'm happy you are home and managing. I just can't believe how healthy your attitude is considering all you have to contend with. I myself can't get excited aout anything anymore but that's another story. Contratulations on your new clothing size. I am so happy you are happy to have had the sleeve surgery. Take good care now of that knee and as for the rest you know what to do. Much love and gratitude -Lis

So sorry your going through such discomfort.Although, not an expert, I would try to get in a lot of fluid with electrolytes/ potassium first and then go for the protein. Some people drink gatoraide I drink vitamin water, both have electrolytes. you might want to use a moist heating pad on your back in the meanwhile to relieve the spasms.

minutes from getting sleeved!
LAN2k replied to annearctica's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was catheterized for a while but when they took the catheter out I had a very hard time peeing. The nurses had to force urine out from me while I was lying in bed...(they did something and it poured out). After that one of the night nurses gave me a hot water bottle to rest on my belly while I sat on the toilet and it helped me to relax and urinate on my own. -
Drinking warm water with lemon sounds like a good idea. I am going to try to do this tomorow morning before I attempt to brush my teeth and gargle. Maybe this will prevent me from having to go through the horrid gagging, heaving and retching I have been going through every morning! I hope it works. Thanks.

Before my surgery I had some sort of mucus thickness trapped in my throat. It was something that was bothersome to me because I could not seem to dislodge it. Right after surgery whilst in my room I began to gag, (before I could even have ice chips) and I heaved and retched and out came globs of brownish black foamy mucus. I think it was what was lodged in there for whatever reason. I also needed my esophagus to be repaired during my sleeve surgery so who knows if any of my symptoms were related. All this guess work is very frustrating and I really wish that there was more certainty where the medical professionals were concerned. I do hope that you get the answers and remedies you need. please let me know how thing progress and I will do the same for you.

I am writing to you because I TOO have been having sinus drainage non-stop since this surgery and have not found anyone else who has encountered this condition. I have spoken to my surgeon about it and he just dismisses it as unrelated to the surgery. My PCP just gave me a referral to a ENT (Ear, nose and throat specialist) which I have not followed up on yet. This is the first time I am hearing about someone here experiencing sinus drainage to such a degree. In the morning when I awake and go to brush my teeth I spend about 20 minutes retching and heaving as I try to rinse the mucus and saliva from a gargle. I am able to drink but not plain Water only Vitamin water and only the Tropical Citrus flavor (dark yellow). If it were not for this drink I'd be dehydrated. I just recently ordered something called "flora sinus" you can google it online. My cousin swears by it. I have only been on it a few days, it contains NAC and Probiotics both of which are supposed to clear away all of the mucus, nasal drip and whatnot. I am not so sure however if this is not a direct effect of the surgery coming up rom the mucus lining of the stomach through the esophagus. Or, if it is a side effect from any of the medications we may be taking. Please keep me posted and let me know of your progress. I am very sorry you are going through this I know the nausea it causes. As a temporary fix I did try zyrtec a couple of times to dry my up and it seemed to help a little. Please keep me informed and I will do the same for you. I wish you relief and resolution to any of these problems for the new year.

I've had some mild nausea since Christmas day. Yesterday I could only manage a small bowl of cream of wheat in the am and again at night and that was it! This morning not only was I nauseous but I had a migraine. I got a prescription for Zophran nausea medication in the form of a small tab that melts on the tongue. It helped although I was still only able to eat a small bowl of cream of wheat this morn and a small bit of chicken soup this evening...I don't know what's going on one day I think I'm doing fine and making progress and the next I'm back to box one! Hope your nausea subsides real soon.

haven't seen mention of headaches
LAN2k replied to Wisconsin_Gal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
having a headache makes things so much more difficult. I am a migraine sufferer. As was previously stated do what you can to stay hydrated and try your best to get in enough protein even if at minimum which I think may be 50 grams. I am suffering with a migraine myself today. Also some things that have helped me to cope with the headaches have been vicks vapor rub on my head, the peel of lemon (I paste the inside of it to the spot where my head aches worst with the vicks and then put an ice pack on top.. Best wishes. -
Thank you. I will ask her at my next appointment and let her know why. Please keep us updated on this condition.

First Horrible Experience...anyone else?
LAN2k replied to I Can and I Will's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've recently experienced a pain right in the middle of my chest during eating not once but twice! It was horrible and my esophagus felt like it was going to rupture the pain was hard like something was pushing up against the walls. I stood up and moved around and the pain subsided but while it was there I couldn't even take a deep breath without feeling the pressure and pain. Anyone experience that before? -
I'm sorry for this complication but I think you have done the right thing and it will be remedied. I am glad to know there are no leaks. Thank God for that now let's pray this other issue is resolved and fast. Please keep us informed. It seems there is less posting lately due to the holiday season but I'm sure others will respond with additional help and support. Just hang in there it's all any of us can do when we run into a setback or problem having to do with this surgery. God bless and keep you.
