My insurance BCBS WY said my wife and I have to have a documented five year weight history in order for the surgery to be approved. It's not in their policy which I have a copy of. We both meet the reqirement in the policy, but the five year weight history is not in there. I've been denied once, and my wife has been denied twice. We are young so we haven't really been to the doctor at all and we haven't has insurance until this past two years. We are getting ready to go to the state insurance board. Can anyone offer any ideas? This is ludacris. My wife could have a heart attack or stroke in the next five years...but she despretly wants kids and I want to be a good healthy dad. I know the only way she can get pregnant is for her to lose the weight. Everywhere we turn for help, the door seems to be slammed shut.

I have a copy of their policy, and it doesn't say anything about a documented weight history. Only two requirement. BMI of 35 with at least two comorbities or a BMI of 41 alone. I'm thinking the state insurance office is what we'll have to resort to.

I was just told by my insurance (BCBS WY) that i need a 5 year supervised diet through my dr. in order to be approved. I supplied 5 years of weight records because I was told they would only need that and proof that my bmi is over 40.. My bmi is 55. Please help.. Has anyone heard of a 5 year supervised diet??? I feel like i don't have 5 years...

When I get a little weight off, I would like to do intermural hockey. I don't plan on doing this until after my band heals competely, but will I have to be careful and be less aggressive?

Hi. I have a BMI of 40.7. If my doctor writes me a letter of medical necessity, I can avoid the six month diet that I think my insurance wants me to do? I have BCBS Wyoming.

Thanks Paisleypea, I just got my criteria and in writing it says bmi 40 or over or 35 with a cormorbidity. So it looks good, but I'm leary they'll make me jump through some hoops.

I found out I have to have 5 year medical history documentation. The problem is, I've been at a bmi 0f 40 during that time, and have only been to the doctor maybe twice. Any thoughts that will help me get approved?

Thank you both for your replies. I can't find any supervised diet in my insurance clause, but they won't give me a straight answer. I've only been at a 40BMI for the past four years and only had one physcial during that time so I really don't know what they are going to say. I do have hypertenstion and a little pain in my knees when I squat. No one in the insurance seems to know what is going on and I'm frustrated.
