What was the cause of your SLIPPAGE?
purplekat replied to Jul's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was so glad to read this thread. I was banded march 16, 2009 and did great until mar 2010 no one told me my allergies would affect my lapband. Of course this season is worse than last year and I did not have a full fill until JUl09. Well with sinus drainage, sneezing and etc. i ended up with vomiting and and another new term, esophogeal spasms. JOY:cursing:. My band has slipped but with the unfill fluid went through according to the barium swallow plus the esophogeal spasms stopped. Surgeon said My pouch was inflamed and stretched and in a small number of cases it slips back through again. Otherwise, I will be having surgery in the next couple weeks to have it stitched back where it belongs. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Will be seeing my surgeon next weeWk....... -
How did you make your final decision??
purplekat replied to mimirae's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do NOT have surgery until your are ready!!! It is a big decision that you must be comfortable with and there is always a risk of complications with any surgery. That being said I had my Lapband surgery on MAR16, 2009 and I have lost 74# since starting the presurgery diet. It was the best decision I have ever made. I had done WW and also lost over 50# on a physician supervised diet but could not keep the weight off. I have high blood pressure and also arthritis in one knee. I needed to lose the weight to become more healthy. I feel 10 years younger and have so much more energy. It is a tool and you still have to work at it but you can achieve success with the lapband. -
Happy birthday LapLady09! I was really nervous at my first fill too. My weight has started to drop again after my fill last thursday, but have noticed my band feels tighter in the AM. I am trying chocolate ensure with milk added and heated up in microwave. This went down pretty well this AM, especially because it was warm. Good job on the 26-28#. That is like carrying almost 3 10# bags of sugar around all day long!

Another choice would be to order off the appetizer or salad menu. You could also order off the side menu or the ala carte menu. I appreciate the info onthe restaurants that allow you to order off the kids menu.

Good morning! Yes I am feeling restriction but no pain:) My doctor had recommended children's liquid tylenol but the taste made me almost gag, worse than crushing my regular pills. I took childrens liquid motrin and took enough for 400mg., 4 teaspoons. I was reading on the forum that the tightness of your fill can feel tighter in the AM or increase in tightness over the next 2 weeks. That makes me a little nervous as I feel preety good restriction right now. I am going to keep a positive attitude that all will go well. Also weight loss has started again and I have lost another pound. Happy easter to all!

A hiatal hernia is where a portion of your stomach pops up through your diphragm. There is already a hole there for your esophagus to go through but the hole is too large with a hernia so the stomach pops through. this results in heart burn and gastric reflux. I had mine repaired with my lapband and my diphragm was sore for several days due to sutures in it. I treated with ice packs and liquid vicodin from my surgeon.

I would recommend putting an ice pack over your port site to help with any swelling that is going on. During a mensrual cycle womoen also experience swelling with water retention. I have noticed with poor posture ie slumping forward at my laptop, that i can get some discomfort over my incisions. If I ice and lay flat that discomfort goes away. If you run a fever of 101 deg, notice redness, streaks from the incisions or discharge then those are signs of an infection. I am a physical therapist and treat post op patients. It is always important to let your surgeon know about any symptoms you are experiencing and to write your questions down when you go to see him so you will not forget anything. Hope this helps.

Hi to all. I got 5cc for my first fill in my 10cc band. I was nervous about it but it has turned out fine. The surgeon was only going to put in 4cc but he found alot of air in my band and said I already had some restriction. His surgery group always starts with the band as empty as possible. Because of this being the holiday week-end, my doc had me drink 3 glasses of water to make sure there was not too much restriction. I was very burpy with the first one but fine by the 3rd cup. I had some soreness from the fill so took some liquid motrin and that went away. I did not notice any soreness after surgery because I had a hiatal hernia repaired so my diaphragm was very sore. I had liquids the day of the fill, soft food this AM and I'm supposed to eat solids tonight but am too tired after work. I can go back in 4 weeks for another fill if I feel I need one or if I am losing weight fine can then I can wait 8 weeks to go back. One of the men at my church had a lapband done and he has lost 144# and only 20# more to go. He stated any time the doctor offers a fill you should take it. I believe everyone is different and that as long as you are loosing weight and following your surgeons guidelines you are doing fine. My surgeon is happy with 1-2# of wt loss per week but I am not that patient. Good luck to all and Happy Easter.

Hi y'all! Just found this thread today. I also had my lapband done on 16mar09 in Round Rock, Texas. I started a 2 wk pre-op diet of 30 grams of carbs or less and lost 12#. It is interexting to note the differences between physicians on pre and post op diets. Post-op I was on clear liquids for a couple of days and then liquids for the rest of 2 wks post op. I am currently eating soft foods and get my first fill tomorrow 9apr09. I am a little nervous. I have lost 23.5# since starting pre-op diet but have also plateaued. glad to hear that this lapband hell before first fill is normal. I had bilateral shoulder pain after surgery and went for a deep tissue massage in sidelaying which greatly helped my shoulder pain. Will post again after first fill.

TO be banded on Mar16, 2009
purplekat replied to purplekat's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am in Belton, Texas. My husband is a soldier stationed at Ft Hood. -
I have been brousing the website for awhile and trying to learn how to use. I am on a 30 gram of carb diet for the 2 weeks prior to surgery and have lost 9.5#. I put a ticker on my signature and will try to figure out why it is 1# off. I am excited and scared. I believe anyone undergoing any type of surgery should be concerned and aware of the risks. However obesity is a risk in my life that i ignored until it shoved itself in my face with high blood pressure and arthritis in my knee. At 46 I am too young to be slowed down by a stiff achey knee. I have never talked on a chatroom before. I learned from weight watchers that talking to people who are facing the same challenges really helps. I look forward to chatting with y'all, as I am from Texas.

Some thoughts as I approach surgery date
purplekat replied to HAL380's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Hal, My surgery date is 3-16-09. I truly believe this is the right answer for me in my head but my heart is still fearful. I have a 14 year old special needs daughter which is one reason for and against surgery. With any surgery there are major risks, but less with this one than with gastric bypass. On the other hand, my weight holds me back physically due to knee osteoarthritis. Mentally I do not feel like I am over 100# over weight but after seeing my self on the computer over video chat and pictures at christmas, I realize that I am obese and do need help. I think it is very important to discuss any serious doubts with your healthcare provider and your surgeon. Both of mine are very supportive. Initially, I was not going to tell anyone at work as I am physical therapist and being over weight is my profession in healthcare is sad. However, I slowly told individuals on our staff and have been truly amazed at the positve response. Of course I am blessed that my family supports me and want me to be happy and healthier. I am not saying you are not ready. However in healthcare, I have noticed that the people who have a positive attitude and "buy into" physical therapy as means to improving their health do the best. I appreciate your philosophic post. By posting to you, I have clarified in my mind, my reasons for getting a lapband and that I have the support to help me win this weight loss battle. best of luck Kat
