    July 2013 sleevers

Tues the 16th is my day. 8 am sharp! Well, we all know what "8 am" means in hospital terms: means get there by 8 but wait all day because every surgery has run over. Anyone else on Tues? I'm having band to sleeve revision
  2. Not sure why (since I had band surgery 4 yrs ago and didn't think twice about it) but my major fear for my revision on Tues is waking up in the middle of surgery. Apparently they give you 2 drugs during surgery. One to stop your muscles from moving and one to actually knock your brain out. When that one doesn't work, you're awake during the whole thing, but unable to alert anyone cuz your muscles aren't working. http://www.mirror.co...atients-1759191 http://theconversation.com/why-some-people-wake-up-during-surgery-7059 I know this is rare, but I'm terrified of this all of a sudden. I've had about 6 other surgeries in my life and never even thought about it. now I'm terrified of going under. About 10 yrs ago, I had right foot surgery. They gave me a spinal that deadened the lower half of my body and did the 2 hr surgery wide awake. Why can't they do the same thing? It's probly the stupidest question today - especially coming from a nurse (haven't worked as a nurse in over 10 yrs however, so I can plead ignorance!). Anyone else have silly fears going into this?

Fear of dating after major weight loss

((hugs)) My husband of 19 yrs also passed away in 2007. I thought I'd never date again, let alone get married. It took 3 yrs (and the loss of 75 lbs thru the lapband) to get me to date again. it took about 9 mths of 1st dates before I met my now-husband. Were together for a year before getting married (18 mths ago). Our relationship is totally different from my 1st husband. I will always remember my 1st husband with love, it's just different now. I'm not sayin better or worse, just different. One of these day you WILL be able to open yourself up again to looking for love. we all need love. Doesn't change because we had wls or because your spouse dies. Those first 3 yrs were so hard. I missed him so much. I think about him daily and my husband doesn't mind it at all if I talk about him. Hang in there. When you're ready, you'll know. Btw, I met my husband on an online free dating site (Plenty of Fish). So online really does work sometimes!
  4. I'm getting my revision done on Tues morning at 8. Looking forward to a cure for my nighttime reflux and the ability to keep food down without vomiting. I'll update afterwards and let you know how it went....

    Week 3-No Desire to eat.

I thought the hunger hormone, Ghrelin, was permanently removed? Am I wrong? I know the part of the stomach they remove makes about 75% of Ghrelin and the pancreas makes the rest (why we're still a little hungry after surgery). I will be bummed if it's true that it comes back...Anyone know?
  6. My drs plan (my revision is for Tues, July 16th) is for 4 wks of liquids (only Protein shakes, Jello, sf popsicles, broth, watered down juice, and crystal lite). No cream soups, yogurt, pudding, nothing fun for 4 full weeks. Then it's a soft diet for 4 weeks (adding yogurt, pudding, eggs, refried Beans, tuna, anything mashed with a fork) then regular food as tolerated. Don't know how I'm gunna make it for 4 weeks with just Clear Liquids + protein drinks. Not sure why I'm not allowed cream soups, but I'm not. Good luck!

    Chicken broths ect

Store bought chicken broth is very salty already, so I wouldn't add salt to them. If you buy lo sodium broth, you're doing it for a reason, so why would u add salt to it? I would say pepper, hot sauce, other spices would be fine. Good luck! I'll be joining you in the liquids only on Monday (surgery is Tues)

    What to eat ?

Your dr should have tole you what to eat for the week before. Mine is regular till 24 hrs before, then it's 24 hrs of liquids only (full till 5 pm then clear till midnight). I'm getting my revision on Tues, July 16th. So excited. Follow your drs guidelines. If you have no guidelines, I'd seriously consider a new dr! They should have pre op and post op instructions for you!
  9. Me either. not understanding why I can't blend up a smoothie in my blender and drink it (liquids are whatever you can get thru a straw, or so I was told once). I would even add a scoop of Protein powder. But dr says no. No fresh fruits/veggies until the 3rd month. liquid is liquid is liquid, or so I see it. But you'd better listen to your dr. Don't want any complications (like a leak at your staple line from adding food too fast). They have as much education s they do for a reason.
  10. "I have just seen varying "timeframes" on when you can eat/try it again..... I know that red meat stays in your stomach ( regular stomachs) for days....." , Untrue. You've processed any food you eat within 24 hrs. Steak doesn't take longer to break down down even tho it may feel like it.

    Drain! AHHHHHH

When I had my gallbladder out 20 yrs ago, I had a JP drain for a week. When he took it out, it didn't hurt, but it was very strange. Akin to holding a strand of spaghetti and swallowing it then bringing it back up (yes, I've done it! Don't lie, you have too!). It's really long too so it takes a few seconds. It'll be over before you know it. I promise, it doesn't hurt. Just feels weird...

    ***WARNING*** PLEASE READ

I'm a nurse and have treated people for hyponatremia (too much Water, not enuf sodium) in the past. But they drank like 3 gallons at a time. Can't imagine that happening with a gallon a day. I hate Gatorade. Tastes like salty Koolaid to me. I bought some Powerade Lite for post op next week. Haven't tried it yet, but I know I've got to get the salt and potassium that plain water doesn't provide. Good luck to you. Glad you're feeling better!

    Liquid Diet Heaven!

I'm on the 16th too! Nice to "meet" you! Only 5 days left...

    Wine

Btw, I'm just kidding! Just wanted to see if everyone was paying attention!!

    Wine

White wine is on my drs clear liquid list...
  16. Have you tried unflavored Protein in juice, soup (not hot, as the protein denaures in anything over 130), crystal lite, even Jello? 4 yrs ago when I was banded, I spent $180 on GNC.com. Hated everything, including the Isopures. My nurse told me they tasted like Jolly Ranchers. Not sure where she gets her Jolly Ranchers but they tasted nothing like them. They're pure ick. This was before I found out that gnc.com has a taste guarantee. Could've been refunded all that money that was wasted. It's also guaranteed at the store. So if you don't like what you purchased, you can take it back. I recently bought a sampler order of 11 different flavors from Syntrax nectar (bjsbariatrics.com). In it were numerous flavors that should be mixed with Water (strawberry kiwi, roadside lemonade, tropical paradise, etc). Good luck!

Honestly, how much do you vomit?

Thanks to you all for calming my nerves (and my husbands too!). He worries everytime he hears me wretch in the bathroom. Can't wait till this band is out! It's pretty bad when vomiting becomes part of your norm. I've thrown up in public restrooms, friends bushes (when I didn't want anyone to hear me at our poker games), on the side of the road (leaning outside of the car door). It doesn't hurt, in fact it makes me instantly feel 100% better. I'm hoping to not throw up at all. But with everything comes a learning curve. It'll probly take me a few times to teach me a lesson. Thanks again!

    Should I?

I'm going for my band to sleeve revision on the 16th too! Hope yours goes well!!

Honestly, how much do you vomit?

"vomiting" (or PB'ing as bander call it - Productive Burp) is not painful with the band at all. All it is is food stuck in my esophagus. No stomach acid cuz it's not coming from the stomach. Just thought I'd let you know what barfing with the band is like! I'm sure it made your day!

    Pre Op Diet Disaster

I live right across the street from a McD's too! Thankfully, however, I don't really care for their food (their fries are decent) so I've only been there 2x in the past 2 yrs! I have absolutely no pre op diet, just 24 hrs of liquids beforehand next Monday. Just giving you some reference. Not sure why they give some people diet and others have none. I had absolutely no pre op 4 yrs ago when banded. He had no idea how big my liver is either, no tests to determine that. I'm sure you'll be fine. Just go back to what you were instructed to do from this day on. Good luck! And I know how you feel...
  21. I've read many posts on here about drs orders to never have carbonation or caffeine again. I'm a die hard coffee snob. Must have several cups of GOOD coffee everyday to even function. My dr never said anything about coffee. I've also read that caffeine causes ulcers and since my stomach will be so small, I can't tolerate ulcers. Now, it's been almost 20 yrs since nursing school but I'm pretty sure that in the 90's it was proven that a bacteria (why people with ulcers are given antibiotics) caused ulcers, not diet or stress. If this is the case, why would we have to not drink caffeine? And for those of you who say "switch to decaf", you have no clue what being a coffee addict is all about. Decaf isn't REAL coffee. Btw, neither is Folgers, IMHO! Whats the real scoop on coffee?

    UTI?

I was told by my pcp that Cystex and any other otc drug for uti's don't work. They're a waste of money. You actually need antibiotics. I don't think they do anything other than turn your pee orange. Good luck. I've had my fair share of uti's in my lifetime. Its been a couple of years (knock on my keyboard!)
  23. So you're getting a revision because of pain and reflux? How exactly does cutting out MORE of your stomach help with pain and reflux? You'd think it'd make it worse. I'm going into a band to sleeve revision in 6 days because my slip causes extreme reflux. I'm praying that the sleeve will help it but I'm getting scared that it'll make it worse. And there's nothing I can do about it afterwards.... So, just out curiosity, why are you having the revision? Did they make your stomach too big the first time?
  24. I have the same fears as you. I've had my band for almost 4 yrs, it slipped last year and they totally unfilled me. I've gained back 30 of the 104 lbs I lost (was within 9 lbs of my goal 18 mths ago). Scheduled for revision next Tues, the 16th. Scared I'm gunna wake up in the recovery room and be told there was too much damage to my stomach to do my sleeve. Then my insurance won't pay for it in the future cuz my bmi is only 28. It HAS to be done at once or I can't afford the sleeve. I'm worried that I will fail. I never learned healthy habits with the band (turned into a bulimic, probly why I lost 104 lbs) and still have my unhealthy eating habits. HATE diets and rely too much on the tool to do all the work, instead of me doing part of it. I'm afraid I will do the same thing with the sleeve. I'm already thinking when I can "cheat" on my post op diet and it be ok (that I won't get a leak on my staple line). I've only got 6 days left before my revision and I'm trying to get all my favorite foods in, just in case I'll never eat them again. I think about my next meal during my current meal. Thats such unhealthy eating habits. I'm with you on the nervous bit about the revision. I did well with the band (after I finally got it adjusted correctly) so I' hoping to do well with the sleeve also. hoping we have uneventful revisions and we both (all) do well!
