Banded for 3 years and struggling with reflux
marfar7 replied to CAROLYNFC's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Have u had a recent xray? 3 yrs of a lapband, almost daily vomiting, I suffered severe nighttime reflux. My band had slipped. gained 30 lbs back during the year I was unfilled. Last July I had a sleeve revision. Sometimes reflux is the ONLY symptom of a slip. I had a minor slip that turned into a major slip and couldn't be fixed on it's own. Good luck! I know how miserable reflux is. -
How important is your goal weight for you?
marfar7 replied to green*eyed*girl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 16 lbs from goal. The first 100 were easy compared to the last 20. I've been tossing the same 2 lbs back and forth for about 4 mths now. If I took it more seriously, I could probly lose it. Truth is if I never lost another lb, I'd still be happy. Happy to be in a size 7/8 jeans, able to tie my shoes and cross my legs, and wear a bathing suit (dont let my road-map of a tummy show tho). I'd be over the moon if I weighed 135, not sure how'd I'd feel as I've never before in my adult life weighed less than 144. So yes, while I'd be overjoyed to reach my goal, I'm also happy maintaining (which I do easily with my sleeve, yeah!) my current weight. I used to roll my eyes at friends who complained about the 20 lbs they needed to lose. 20 was nuthin. Now it's SOMETHING... Good luck with ur surgery! -
Last yr I was browsing the clearance section of Old Navy. Found a cute pair of skinny white jeans for $8. Took the 10's and 8's into the dressing room, hopiong for the 8's but knowing it would probly be the 10's. Walked outa the store with 6's. I think they must've been mistagged. Those have become my fav pants! Have fun with the shopping. Its so nice to shop in the regular section vs the "fat lady store".

Feeling Lucky (Pre-op Diet)
marfar7 replied to almosthome's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ur nutritionist advised u drink diet pop? Never heard of such a thing. Enjoy them now cuz afterwards u hafta say goodbye to anything carbonated. Good luck! PS: Guess u also don't want to hear from people who had NO pre op diet?? (me) -
I learned to eat fast in Army basic training. If u didn't eat in 5 minutes, u didn't eat. Spent 3 1/2 yrs vomiting about 50% of my meals (post lapband) because I ate too fast. Since being sleeved (almost 8 mths) I still eat fast. My husband is always in a hurry so I tend to want to keep up with him. I plan on working on eating slower. Some habits are hard to break... Good luck

Survey - Carbonated Drinks? Do u drink them?
marfar7 replied to lapnicky's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 7 mths out now and I occasionally have 1 sip og hubbys soda when we go out to eat. I could "NEVER" fiish my own soda - and the sip satisfies me. Doest cause any pain but I'ma scaredy car! Goo luck -
I'm down 100 lbs from 250. It feels AMAZING. I can wear shorts and short skirts with confidence, cross my legs from the top, wear size 6 panties (and I don't buy the 6 pack of Hanes Her Way from Walmart anymore!), wear size 7/8 jeans, and actually shop for bathing suits in the junior dept (altho I'll never be confident enuf to wear a bikini. Have too much skin and scars for that. Plus no one wants to see a 46 yr old in a bikini). You will LOVE it. I'm about 18 lbs from my 135 goal and I will eventually get there. The last 20 r the most stubborn. The first 100 were much easier than the last 20. Good luck wth ur surgery and get ready to experience life in a whole new way!

Luv my coffee. I could drink coffee from sun up to sundown. I usually just use a splash of sf creamer, but occasionally I enjoy a sugar free fancy drink from the local coffee house. Last week, I ordered a "lo carb/lo calories" frozen mocha from a new coffee place. So yummy. An hour later, my stomach was cramping. Badly. Felt like after eating an Atkins bar. For about 2 hrs I was running to the bathroom. So for experimental sake, I ordered another today, wondering if it was the drink. It is. My stomach is currently cramping. Must be sorbitol in it (same as Atkins uses). I can use Splenda, Nutra Sweet and Saccharin but not sorbitol. Guess no more yumminess for me... While I CAN drink unlimited coffee a day, I usually keep it to about 2. The 30 calories from the sf creamer can add up quickly. Other than the hidden calories and dyhydration factor, not sure why coffee is out for alot of drs. My dr said I can drink moderately, he wouldn't take away all my vices...thank God! Good luck and enjoy ur coffee!!!

post- op food ideas?
marfar7 replied to Valerie R.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on full liquids for 4 weeks (started Protein shakes + Water the day after while in the hospital). I could have 1oz shake every hour, 0 calories drinks (like Crystal Lite, Powerade 0 ,etc), sf Jello, sf puddings, cream soups/broth, sf popsicles, yogurt, and runny cream of wheat. I was terrified of getting a leak so I didn't even eat jello for fear it was too solid for a couple weeks. Then I got hungry. So very hungry... If I never see another cup of split pea Soup (of course put into the food processor to get out the lumps) again it'll be too soon. On day 7, I felt like crap. Nauseous. Couldn't even drink a sip of water. By 7 pm I realized that I was dehydrated. It's a viscous cycle: Ur nauseous cuz ur not drinking but u can't drink cuz ur nauseous. I managed to down 16 oz of Powerade 0(a plus after surgery since it has electrolytes, u need those). I dreamed about the day I could eat soft foods. in fact, my first meal was well planned out. I was going to have a small amt of refried Beans, topped with cheddar, sour cream and taco sauce. It was like eating steak and lobster. My first bite of mashed potatoes was like an ice cream sundae, and my first bites of scrambled egg were like heaven. Good luck with ur surgery. Ull do fine. All of us manage to make it thru the restrictive part and come out better for it... -
Easily maintaining...need to work at it to lose tho....
marfar7 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey everyone, I'm 7 mths post band-sleeve revision. I've lost all but the last 18 lbs. I've been tossing the same 2 lbs back and forth for about 4 mths now. Actually, fairly easily. Everytime I get on the scale (usually daily), I'm happy to say it doesn't go up - even tho I expect it to. Guess I'm gunna actually hafta do something to lose the last 18... Count something, measure something, weigh something....who woulda thunk it? So happy with my sleeve. I know that once I finally get to goal, I'll be able to easily maintain... -
Liquids won't "fill u". Neither will purees. U hafta just stick with the measurements ur dr gave u. When ur started on soft foods, u will fee' "full". Much different than ur life before (think after Thanksgiving "full"). Yes, ur goal is to stop the hunger - and just a few bites (literally 3-8 bites) will do it, especially in the beginning. I'm 7 mths out and can eat quite a bit more. I'm pretty much maintaining fairly easier. Gunna hafta work harder to lose the last 18. So thats that. Feeling "full" after ur sleeve can be quite painful. I know when I've 1 bite too much - and the 1 bite can feel like a whole sandwich too much!

Brand new start wuth my sleeve
marfar7 replied to katieTC's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had a rough recovery in July 13. I kept reading on here how people didn't even need painkillers post op and thought I was the only one. I was on IV Dilaudid for 48 hrs and liquid Vicodin for 12 days. It was the worst surgery I'd ever had, my lapband was easy peasy compared. The dr took an extra 30 mins to dig my band out causing more pain than normal. After the first 2 weeks I started feeling more normal. It was a long 4 weeks of liquids only and I was literally starving after the first 10 days. Ull get thru it, I promise. So yes, there's others out there that had a rough recovery. Take the IV pain meds that they offer cuz the stuff at home isn't as good. And the liquid pain meds theyll give u are good stuff! It'll all be worth it soon. As soon as u start seeing the difference in ur jeans Go od luck! -
My eyes are ALWAYS bigger than my stomach. I waste so much food. I INTEND to eat it all - but it NEVER happens. I was sharing meals with hubby before he went on Atkins Induction in January. Now we eat totally different foods so I tend to waste alot. And this is after 7 mths of practice with the sleeve and almost 4 yrs of practice with the lapband. In the last 4 yrs, I've never eaten more than 1/3 of a sandwich, but I feel a need to always make at least 1/2, sometimes a whole one. I put my leftovers in the frig and hardly ever eat them, making me feel less guilty 4 weeks later when it's bad to throw it away...

Anyone else feel like you won't be successful with VSG after failed lap band?
marfar7 replied to rbtnln's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my band for almost 4 yrs before it slipped. Had a revision in July 2013. I've now lost a whopping 24 lbs in 7 mths. Most of this was the first 2 mths. I've been tossing the same 2 lbs back and forth for 5 mths now. I learned how to "eat around the band" therefore learning to "eat around the sleeve". I'm hungry often, only able to eat a few bites, but hungry again 90 mins later. I know if I focus on those last 18 lbs I have left, they'll eventually come off. I prided myself so much on my weightloss virtually "work free", meaning I eat whatever I want, just much less of it that I feel jipped having to actually work at it. I've got to stop thinking that wls is the magic bullet I thought it was. The last 18 lbs aren't gunna come off without some hard work. Is this kinda where ur at 2? -
I used to vomit almost daily with my lapband. I've only vomited once in the last 7 mths since my revision. I've actually tried to vomit (ate 1 bite too much and it caused much pain) but it's just not as easily done as when I was banded. I used to just bend over and my food would come up. Now I have to stick my toothbursh down my throat and nothing will come up. I guess thats good. I was becoming an unwitting bulimic while banded for almost 4 yrs. I think thats how I lost all of my weight. Now I hafta think about what I put into my tummy, as I can't press the reject button anymore.

I had the vgs on jan 14th.

I take 3 20mg Rx Prilosec, 4 150mg OTC Zantac at nite + 1 20mg Prilosec in the am + chew my weight in Tums everyday. I'm probly overdoing it (especially at nite) and my dr has no idea I take this much (I plan on telling him in my upcoming appt) otherwise he'd probly put a stop to it. If I take any less than this regimen, I'm up at 3am with severe reflux and can't eat till about 1 pm cuz of my morning heartburn. If u find something that works, please let me know what it is! Oh, I'm 7 mths post op, btw... -
Maybe 3x a week I will have 1 egg and 1 pc of bacon, 3x a week is Grape Nuts with 1/3 of a banana and 1x a week Ill eat some oatmeal with maple syrup.

Why do i feel like i can eat a Cow?!?
marfar7 replied to Coco1265's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some of us lose our hunger for a long period. Some of us. I wasn't so lucky. I started having physical hunger on day 10 post op. Was on liquids for 4 weeks, so literally starving. When I started my soft diet, I was surprised at how little I could eat. When I started regular foods, it was even less. Now that I'm 7 mths post op, I can definitely eat more (which I'm bummed about). I fight for every single lb I'm able to lose. I'm 18 lbs from goal and feel that I'll NEVER get there. So welcome to the "unlcky group" of those who never really lost their hunger. Ghrelin is made in other places (including the brain and pancreas) and not just in the part of stomach they remove. For those of u who r lucky enuf to lose it, enjoy!!! Goood luck! Ull find u can't eat much when u start eating actual food. I felt starving all the time while on liquids... -
I'm also a band to sleeve revision. I loved my band the first couple yrs - till it slipped and I started having problems for a year. Until I didn't. Had the sleeve been offered to me 4 yrs ago, I probly would've taken it, but it was either the band or bypass - and the bypass was too scary for me. Do ur research. Go onto the lapband support site and look at the complications forum. Probly the biggest forum around. Try not to 2nd guess ur decision. Ull probly do enuf of that post op - when lots of people have Buyers Remorse. Good luck!

I ate a lot of chili with cheddar cheese on top, refried Beans, eggs, egg salad, chicken salad, and (gasp) mashed potatoes. Yep, I ate carbs! And with gravy (double gasp). Tilapia, mahi mahi is really good and canned veggies (fresh veggies aren't considered soft). I even ate some french fries (maybe 5 in 1 sitting) (triple gasp) Have fun eating actual food. I couldn't wait to eat soft after 4 weeks of liquids. I dreamt about my first meal (refried beans, cheese, taco sauce with a dollup of sour cream). Tasted like steak and lobster to me!

What do u think of liquids only for a couple weeks to jumpstart my loss?
marfar7 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
liquids only. I'm maintaining fairly easily so I know when I get to goal, I can maintain it. It's just getting off those last 18 that r killing me. Hubby suggested I go back to liquids only for a couple weeks. Good idea? Bad idea? Crazy idea? Comments appreciated! ' -
I had my revision at 174 6 mths ago (bmi 28). I knew I couldn't lose the last 40 lbs without another tool. While I've only lost down to 153 (18 lbs from goal), I'm not really trying but maintaining failry easily. I know if I buckled down (thinking about going with Protein shakes and liquids only for a couple weeks to start things going again) I could get the rest off. So, yes, I was under 200 lbs. Oh, and I've thrown up twice in the last 6 mths (totally my fault for eating too much) vs almost daily with the band. Good luck!
-
Was revised 6 mths ago at 174. I've only lost down to 153. I'm not really trying to lose and the sleeve is allowing me to maintain fairly easily. I know if I kicked it up a notch and actually started trying to lose, I could get to my 135 goal (18 lbs). The last 20 r the hardest! The first 100 were easy peasy compared to the last 20. So yes, my bmi was 28 at my revision. The nurses who didn't know I had a revision thought I was crazy for taking out 85% of my stomach while weighing 174. Ur right. I would never have been able to keep the weight off without a new tool. I know myself too well.. Gained 30 lbs over the year my band was unfilled due to a slip. Good luck to u

Surpassed goal - what I've learned in the past year
marfar7 replied to HoosierGirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congrats to u! I've got the last 18 to go and haven't lost a lb in 3 mths. I lose and gain the same 2 lbs - back and forth. Haven't even thought about the 5:2 diet. Maybe I'll give it a shot. Can't hurt. WTG!
