I started this journey four years ago, in Texas. I decided to have gastric bypass surgery, selected my surgeon, went through the entire approval process, and 2 days after everything was approved, the company I was working for announced that they were closing the Texas office, and I was offered a transfer to New York. So, I had to put everything on hold, and after I moved, I started researching surgeons here, but would need to go through the approval process again, because I had different insurance. Well, no sooner did I start researching surgeons and centers, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. So, I had to get through the surgery and chemotherapy treatments. Fortunately, the surgeon I selected for my breast cancer is also a bariatric surgeon in a center of excellence here on Staten Island. so I brought up the matter with her. She said that I would have to wait two years after the cancer surgery to even consider bariatric surgery, and that the only surgery she would recommend for me would be the restrictive banding, since I have chronic anemia since the cancer.Anyway, I waited the two years and began the approval process again, received approvel, and finally had lap band surgery on June 11, 2009, just two weeks ago. The surgery went fine. I am currently on medical leave from work, recovering from the surgery, and return to work on Monday.Although I know the rest ot this journey will not be easy and that I will have some bumps along the way, I am looking forward to ultimately feeling better and having enough energy to actually go out and do things, and take advantage of all the activities and fund New York City has to offer.
