As a counselor, I have witnessed a lot of that - only I call it "fear of success." It's frightening to be successful and to be outstanding when you've never been anywhere near there - it's way out of your comfort zone! And if people find out you are capable of performing at a high level, then they expect it of you all the time.....bummer!! Fear of success is complicated and harder to deal with than fear of failure. It's probably one of the things that keeps us from losing weight as certain times of our lives....and the reason many of us regain the weight we've lost.

The girl apparently did not 'die from a lapband' as the man states in his title....she died from malpractice.

Is it really worth it?

I have lost 107 lbs in 10 months and have exercised very little because I was not able until I lost abou5 50 lbs....about all I have done since then is walk 1 miles 3-4 days/week. I know I need to do more to tone my muscles and I am now able to do so. As for food, I do not consider my food lifestyle a diet at all. I simply go by band eating rules....no white carbs/sweets, no carbonated drinks, no liquids during or right after meals, no fried foods. I eat Protein first, then veggies. I keep my carbs under 50/60 gr/day, and my Proteins about 80-100 gr./day. My biggest problem is getting in enough calories a day because I'm simply not hungry and can't hold much food. I use protein supplements daily to keep my muscles strong and my hair healthy...they also satisfy some of 'head hunger' that we all deal with from time to time. I have never been able to lose this much before or control my eating habits for this long and with as little stress. -
CalGirl.....I hope pre-ops will read your post and take heed - so often people who just refuse to follows their surgeon's pre-op diet orders ("whining I just can't do it") - they need to value their bodies and take their surgery very seriously. Thanks for sharing. You sound like you are off to a great start....best wishes!!!

John....you need to call back and talk to a supervisor, not a clerk .......40 is the minimum, not the only number acceptable!! BCBS did mine and I had a BMI of 62. -
You are experiencing an absolutely normal period of post-wls. You have a band inserted but not yet 'turned on.' You are just recovering from surgery and healing and getting ready for your lifestyle change. Your hunger can be decreased by drinking some good quality Protein supplements....the hi protein/lo carb kind.....you need 80-100 gr/day of protein altho you may not be able to hold that much just yet, you should aim for that. It can be drunk or stirred into puddings, etc. It will satisfy and keep your strength up. Best wishes......

You still have your tool in there ready to work for you.....just review all the things you did back a year ago and start over. You can do it!!!!

The rate at which people loses changes all the time throughout the journey. Hard to give a set answer. Right now, for the first time in my 10 mo since surgery, I'm at a plateau.

A year and a half wait??!! Every time I read a post from a Canadian it scares me to death that we now have people in charge of our US Congress (as of today) who are in favor of socialized medicine. I know there are advantages, but...... Anyhow...hope your Quest goes well....

I love the Fuzzy Navel but it is a little strong if mixed with just 8 oz water....I prefer it mixed with SF lemonade or tea. It's good in hot tea, also (just be sure to mix it with a little cool water first then add the hot tea). It's a clear thin drink , tastes something like Tang. No protein smell or taste at all.

You need to do some googling and some reading from some professional websites. Your vision is pretty far removed from what actually happens.

I'm pleased (shocked!!) at my weight loss since March 06....but I've been on a stall for 3-4 weeks now - and not because of cheating - I haven't in spite of the hoidays. I have cut back on exercise and let my membership drop at the gym. But you are right.....now is a good time to get back on track. A very successful wls friend of mine says 'the first 100 pounds are the easiest'......that means I've got to work harder for my second hundred pounds, doesn't it.

Now you need to ask them what their criteria are for eligibility!! Hope it goes well for you!

WLS cured my IBS!! I haven't even mentioned it to the doctor. I am assuming that it is due in part to a drastic change in eating habits.I had chronic diarrhea for most of 30 years. Since surgery I have not had the constipation that most people complain of but I sure havent had IBS symptoms any more.

Sorry, sweetie, wish I had some insight to share but I don't. Hope you're feeling better by now. Just keep sipping warm or room temp liquids and give it a little time. Do you know how much the doc put in your band this time?

There's a lot more to protein supps than taste....quality is what it's all about for weight loss purposes and health. We really need to be using supplements that are designed for bariatric patients rather than football players. They may cost a little more but after all the other expenses we've had getting to this point, we don't need to skimp on our medication (and this is essentially what the protein supps and vitamins are). Find the highest protein/lowest carbohydrates product you can. Matrix, IDS, and Nectar are all good brands.

That is a real milestone.....feels GREAT, doesn't it! Keep on truckin'.....

New and Just Banded

It's a little early IMO to be trying something like grits. You might try backing up to the liquids for a day or so.....you are still healing. And yes you will feel stuffed for several days.....but it won't last - it's just the swelling from the surgery. Don't rush the foods....take it easy and slow and let yourself get well. You've had major surgery! -
Yep, every southerner loves a good funeral because the food just starts pouring in!! LOL!! And every cook tries to outdo the other. I always accused my dad of going to funerals of people he didn't even know just so he coud eat the good 'vittles.' My mom does the same thing as yours, especially when we eat out. She is in a wheelchair and I'll fill her plate at a buffet and then go fix my paltry little plate. As soon as I sit down, she starts taking food off her plate and piling it on mine. She just can't stand to see me 'deprived.' I'M NOT DEPRIVED!! It does not bother me one bit. In fact, I LOVE feeling superior to all those folks at the buffet places around me eating with both hands like starving barbarians. I AM IN CONTROL!! I no longer have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. I'm still fat, but not as fat as I was.....in spite of my mother!!!

Conniesueb.....PB=Productive Burb. Kind of a strange term for the kind of vomiting a lapbander does...it's not really vomiting...no projectile to it....it just kind of comes up and out, no acid or odor to it, just lots of slime. Some people also call it sliming, but there's a difference between sliming and PB'ing. You'll just have experience it to understand it....but when it happends you'll know it. Do try to control any violent vomiting, tho....it can cause damage.

I never could get ticker factory to work for me....that's why I went to www.choose2lose.com

Are you tracking your intake on something like www.fitday.com? That has been such a help to me. I don't count calories but do count Protein grams (about 100/day) and carbs (less than 40-50/day). No more than our pouches can hold, it you do that, you aren't going to eat too many calories. Until you get past the mushy stage don't even think of counting calories or carbs or anything....just eat right and drink and let your body heal. You've got plenty of time to get the numbers down later.
