Thinking about becoming a runner?
malissa replied to sawyer77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Jacqui - I needed to hear that. Because when I do run, I think to myself - WOW - I'm a runner too. You wouldn't believe how many thumbs up I get from total strangers when they drive by me. It really motivates me and I guess, just feels wonderful that they think I'm really trying, even though I'm still so overweight. I really am VERY careful to listen to my body. I think I have a good stride to not harm my joints and I went to a running store to buy my shoes - (I lost 2 toenails after my half marathon - yuck!) And I must say - runners are the nicest people I have ever met. Not judgemental or anything - just very helpful and friendly. I guess I like the sport because I only have to compete with myself. I'm doing a 5k "team run" with my 10 yr old daughter this weekend. We won't be winning any awards ~ LOL ~ but it sure will be fun! -Malissa -

Thinking about becoming a runner?
malissa replied to sawyer77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would definately be considered the "fat storage wide" LOL. Let me make it clear, that I am no sprinter/runner. I am very careful and listen to my body. I start off walking and then jog/run what I can. I am still very overweight - but for me, right now, it is working and I enjoy it. That being said - Once I lose more weight....I hope to one day be a "true" runner. -
That is awesome!

Thinking about becoming a runner?
malissa replied to sawyer77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have always wanted to be a runner. I would look out the window enviously at people and long to run too. I decided that no matter how big I was, I was going to start! Here I am after a 5k: Big, probably too fat to be participating, but I really don't care... LOL I wasn't even in last place....close....but not last. I still can't run the whole thing. I walk then jog/run, then have to walk again, but I keep chugging along. Back in November I foolishly tried to do a half-marathon. Big mistake - I failed. After 4 hours and at mile 9 they had to pick me up in a golf cart. I was devasted and ashamed. But, chin up. I'm going to try again this November. I would love to keep in contact and track our progress. I'm loving it!! -Malissa -
Congrats! You sound like your loving life - Keep up the good work and I hope one day I can also have that same success.

That sounds like a nightmare! And how the doctor claims he isn't responsible seems rather sketchy. It was obviously related to the fill. Here's wishing her a speedy recovery....

Having doubts. Does this really work?
malissa replied to ThePoolGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am still fairly new, but so far it is great! Amazingly, I DO feel full after eating a small portion. And when I have tried to overeat - ouch! Let's just say I don't do that often - LOL! Friends and relatives say I have transformed into a different person. I eat healthy (lean meats, fresh fruits and veggies, complex carbs, & no sugar). I have taken up jogging and have complete two 5ks. The old me would have NEVER done that! I have said this SO many times.....but my only regret is not getting it sooner! Good Luck. -
Help!! 7 months since surgery no weight loss
malissa replied to rhondarebagirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would record everything you consume - you'd be surprised how fast the calories add up....I know I was! LOL Once you do that, reduce your intake to around 1,200 - 1,500 calories. I try to avoid any processed food. I strive to eat only lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, and NO sugar. Hope that helps... -Malissa -
I think it depends. If you look at my stats you can see that I started with a very high weight and still have plenty to lose. If you are extra heavy, you lose it quick - If you don't have much to lose, it will take you longer.

begging for help...proud of you all but hating myself
malissa replied to Paige59's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I just want to say "Hang in there!" I too have felt like you do. But there is always HOPE... Believe in yourself and set your mind to it. Do any type of movement you can to get your heart rate up. Follow a healthy diet and substitute Protein shakes for meals to get your weight loss started. I can honestly say....my only regret with lapband is that I didn't do it sooner. I have wasted so many years of my life not "living" because I thought I was too big. God Bless and take care. Know that many are wishing you well.... -Malissa -
Aubrie- I hope they find what is wrong. Are you going to your Lapband Dr. or your regular physcian? Maybe try the other one.... Good Luck- Malissa

Mine started about a month ago. So I was 3mo out. As far as taking Biotin - I've been doing that since pre-op because I was so paranoid about this issue. I have not found anything that helps.:frown: Good Luck.

I am soooo with you. I'm trying not to get too nervous about it...but I'm seriously afraid to brush & wash my hair. I'm losing tons! I've asked my doctor and she said it is completely normal and in time it will get better. P.S. I take plenty of Vitamins, eat plenty of fresh food (fruits & veggies), and always get my Protein in. Nothing is helping.....

osangriared: CONGRATS!!! I just completed my 2nd 5k this week - and I improved my time!! Yeah! 7/4 1:00:06 7/8 55:22 I'm going to Michigan to see my grandparents and registered to do one up there. Wish me luck!

Ok....I did my midnight run, the 5k last night!!! ....let's just say I finished....LOL My time was 1:00-06. I took 1 hour and 6 seconds. I obviously walked a lot, and when I did run...I think some walkers passed me! :smile2: Anyway, it was a wonderful experience and I'm so proud of myself that I even did it. I'm going to find the next race and try to beat my old time. The cheers and strangers yelling for me to finish was exhilerating! Thanks to everyone for all the info you post. Although I don't post all the time, I'm a big lurker. Happy 4th, Malissa

I spoke with my doctor about this last week. She said it usually begins at 3mo, peaks at 6mo, and ceases at 9mo. She recommended Biotin but also making sure you have enough protein, zinc, and iron. I have thick hair, but I'm losing heaps. Although outsiders can't tell....I CAN!!

Ok guys - I did week 2 after being on week 1 forever - it was fine! Yea! I even dragged my kids out to do it with me. I'm feeling great! Thanks for all your help.

Anyone in St. Petersburg Florida with a lap band?!
malissa replied to ELL1021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I had my surgery at Palms of Pasadena in St. Petersburg. I'm fairly new and would love to provide you with any support you need. If you have any questions - let me know. -Malissa -
Each person's body requires a different amount of calories, but I'm thinking yours is waaay to low. Personally, I have to consume about 1,200 to lose weight. I try to switch it up a little bit: 1,100 on 1 day, 1,400 the next, etc. I would suggest speaking with your doctor's office and see what they recommend. Good Luck!!

Well, I guess I'll consider moving to the next week/level. I can complete the intervals, it is just very difficult. I'm practically praying for the change to walking - lol. P.S. Carol - WTG on a size 12 pair of jeans!!! I can only dream....
