Pain when I Swallow...Help!!!

Are you still on an acid reducer? -
OMG almost ONE year out!!

ROCK THOSE SKINNY A$$ CROPS CHICKEE ! ! ! -
I used the initially, my mom loves them, and I found a 3 set of them for $10 bucks in the bargain/clearance bin at a Books-A-million store. I've seen them at Borders as well in the bargain bins. Amazon and ebay have gently used versions if you want to pay less. That's what I did for my Hip Hop Ab collection.

I'm only 34, and I have more crows feet than other women my age. Unfortunately, the fat stretched out our skin, it's the same everywhere, and as we lose our weight, those plumped out little wrinkles become more apparent. I am currently using a Mary Kay firming eye cream. It's only been 2 weeks, so I can tell if it's making a difference just yet. Botox and juvederm on my list of "to-do's" after I deliver this little tater tot in November. My husband is totally against it. However, it's my face, and I'm not going to grow old gracefully without full on medical assistance. Even though everyone tells me I look 10years younger than my fat days, I can see them more, I am vain, and I hate them so I'm going to fix them.

Why can't we drink when we eat?
Tiffykins replied to queenmab's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
It liquifies the food you've eaten making it easier to consume more than the prescribed amounts, can cause faster gastric emptying and leaving you less satisfied which leads to more hunger/less satiety, and in turn, gives us more room to eat over our caloric goals for the day. I was stringent about not eating and drinking simultaneously until I got to goal, and my capacity increased. I still do not drink with my meals. However, I do take small sips if necessary. I still do not start really drinking until 30 minutes after a meal. -
Could you please send this note to my husband???? In all seriousness, this is an argument we have as a married couple every 2-3 months. My husband is extremely physically fit, has a body fat % of around 17%, is 29 years old, built like a brick shithouse, has a 30inch waist, so on and so on. He's in the military so he PTs 3 times a week on average, and he is tested annually on 3 components, situps, pushups, and 1.5 mile run.. He has scored 94 on this PT test for the last 2 years. He is a light smoker, rarely drinks, but he refuses to see a doctor. I had to trick him into seeing a doctor for our conception issues. YEP, I tricked him into agreeing to be seen because he had to have some tests ran, and I knew he would not agree to go, but he wanted a baby. We weren't sure what was contributing to our unsuccessful attempts at conception. The Air Force now has a little computer "quiz" that the members answer general health questions. If the member doesn't "tag" any of the hot buttons, they are not required to be seen for a true physical. Now, with all of that being said, my father-in-law is in his early 50's, has high triglycerides (in the 500s), his cholesterol is in the 400s, high blood pressure, smokes 2-3 packs of cigarettes per day, was diagnosed with COPD last year, and had 3 stents placed before last August, and he now has a permanent defibrilator/pacemaker thing that shocks his heart up to 6 times per day to make sure his heart works properly. HELLO HEART DISEASE ! ! ! I made my husband mark those boxes on his family history in the health quiz that he was required to take. At the ripe age of 29, he had an abnormal eKg come back during his routine, annual physical, and that prompted a stress test, which came back with normal results. This was a huge wake up call for him. He's always told me he was going to die before me, and these statements provoke a huge brawl between us. I told him if he wasn't going to take care of himself, and have routine physicals, I was not going to get pregnant, and give him children. Awfully mean, huh? Well, I wasn't going to leave my children fatherless when a little preventative medicine could go a long way. He was a in a very high stress, long hours, job with his previous squadron, and his doctor believes this contributed to his abnormal eKg, and his stress test was scheduled about 6 weeks after he took a different position which has cut his hours by about 20hrs a week (he just works normal shifts now), and it's a much more laid back position. His labs have remained stellar, and of course, our diets/food intake as a family changed dramatically after my surgery. He's finally agreed to take a multi-Vitamin and even though all I can get him to take are the VitaCrave gummies, they are better than nothing for a man with a normal stomach. I also sneak ground flax seed into his baked goods, salad dressings, and other foods because of his family's history of heart disease. I'm not convinced that he will be able to avoid the hereditary factor of heart disease, all his family is suffering from one of the conditions, and most of them are average height/weight.

When I watched that show, because I'm such a critical b*tch, I noticed that all the men had on some sort of binder under their shirt. You could see the little "roll" above the binder under their arms and around their back. As for the arms, and thighs for the females, I think it's all related to the intense training they do, but even some of the ladies had on Spanx under their skin-tight skirts, I could see the lines on their upper thighs and around their mid-section from the spanx. One lady had on a super short skirt, and her thighs were just as jiggly and flabby as mine. Of course, the camera angle was horrible as she walked down the stairs and across the stage so I could see all the skin that wasn't concealed with some sort of binder. I quit watching the show a couple of seasons ago so I haven't watched it recently.

Leaks are funny little things. Most agree that they occur during surgery, and aren't initially found due to swelling from the traumatic surgery. That's why you see leaks found between 2-30 days out on average. I've read of 2 stories on OH where ladies had leaks that went months undiagnosed and they were treated for other conditions, kidney infections, and other things and the leak just wasn't caught. One lady was a textbook surgery, followed her program to the T, didn't eat foods not allowed, the other lady was eating mashed peas and pureed chicken within the first week because she was just too hungry. Neither of their surgeons would say what caused the leak, or that anyone was at fault. The leak stat for an experienced surgeon should be 1% of less. My surgeon had zero leaks, and I ended up with a leak. He is experienced in band to RNY revision, and had around 200 sleeves under his belt, he had done some band to VSG revisions, and I was confident in his skill. I was also a tough revision with severe damage to my stomach tissue so my risk for a leak was quadrupled due to the band. I knew I'd be at a higher risk for complications. My leak was detected 2 days post-revision. I was feeling amazing, no fever, and it was detected on my last leak test about 2 hours before I was to be discharged. I had been up walking, feeling good, laughing with the nurses, but the second I swallowed the gastrographin Fluid, it hit my stomach, I knew I had a leak. I was rushed back into surgery for them to repair it. I had not eaten anything, and had drank very little as I was still on an IV for fluids. Leaks are related to healing and surgical technique. Within the first 2 weeks, the staple line is healing, but if there is a pinhole leak present and it goes undiagnosed, it will grow as the swelling decreases.

Question for you all about complication
Tiffykins replied to myrori's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nope, never heard of that one. I'd be interested to hear where he's getting that information, and what part of VSG, losing weight, gaining health, increasing your heart health is the contributing factor to an increase of lung collapse. -
26 months ago, June 3, 2009 was my date for band to VSG revision. I had the band placed October 2008, and had been researching, reading, absorbing everything I could since early 2007.

Will it ever be enough?
Tiffykins replied to kellyw74's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It takes time, and I can tell you that it didn't hit me until I was about 6-9 months into maintenance before it clicked. I really, honestly believe that at some point you just have to rejoice in the success, and stop beating yourself up for the past. Letting go, and moving forward is such a liberating experience. With all that said, I'm far more critical of my body and my appearance than I was at 270lbs even though I wear a size 2 jean and an XS/Small top. I think it's important that we remember, every woman has issues. It is all in how you manage those issues. Personally, I hate that I have an effin muffin top in a size 2 jean and it's NOT fat, it's skin. There is nothing I can do about it other than wear a spanx like little tank thing. I hate that my boobs like a fried eggs hanging on a nail, but what can I do about it? Not a damn thing, I will say that all the little flaws I see in myself are definitely better than seeing my back fat through my shirts, or my bras cutting into me. Even with plastics, I do not believe I will ever be completely satisfied. There will always be something I hate. My ankle joints are huge, they are boney, but they're huge, and it's not like I can have the bones removed. It's just how my body is made so I have to accept it. I recommend finding clothes that you love, things that fit are much more flattering than baggy clothes. -
How soon after vsg can gall bladder problems occur?
Tiffykins replied to Rainydayz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've seen it as early as 4-6 weeks out. Mine took 8 months post-op for me to finally have it out. I had ignored the symptoms for 2 solids because I was getting into maintenance, and thought the symptoms were because I was introducing new foods. Low and behold, it my little gallbladder getting all pissy and forming stones. I chose to NOT take the Actigall which is sometimes prescribed to help prevent gallstone production. BUT, it's not a guarantee, I've seen people take it for 6 months, and then still have their GB removed around the 9-16 month post-op mark. There are some liver contraindications with that drug and for my own medical history, I chose to not take it. -
This forum seems to have very few people
Tiffykins replied to stilloozen's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm not 60, but I have the hips and knees of a 60 year old. Diagnosed with osteo-arthritis at 21 in my hips and knees. Least to say, exercise was nearly impossible until I had dropped about 60lbs, and even at my lowest, maintenance weight of 125lbs, my knees, hips still grind and pop. Many congrats on your loss thus far ! ! ! -
i want sleeve surgery
Tiffykins replied to overwhelmed's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
This is just my 2cents. Surgeons that try to convince their patients to have RNY typically do not have the same experience with VSG and they are NOT confident in the surgery yet because they do not have the surgical technique down, or they haven't done enough of them to be confident in their levels. OR, the RNY is almost twice as expensive to perform, it's a bigger money maker. The RNY is a much more complicated surgery, has way more risks, and while it might have been around for more years, the 5-8 year results of RNY vs. VSG are neck and neck. Get the surgery you can live with for the rest of your life. Your surgeons "GETS" to cut on you; you're the one that has to live with what he/she gives you ! ! ! -
Losing the band is such a difficult process especially when it fails us. I went through a lot of the same emotions. Personally, I love the sleeve, and it's been awesome for me. I'm over 2 years out, and living a normal little life, pregnant and thriving. We're here for you, and if you need anything, please free to contact me privately ! ! !

I wouldn't say that I still feel fat, but there are little things about my body that I am not a fan of at all. I never understood my naturally, skinny girlfriend's complaints of "fat days", but I totally get it now. It did take me seeing a picture of myself and about 6-7 other girls to see how small I really am, and for it to click. I nit-pick little things about my body that I would have never thought of before.

2 weeks, 3 days out... can I drink yet?
Tiffykins replied to gdc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just because they didn't touch your liver doesn't mean that it's not going to be affected by your drinking alcohol this early. Most surgeons have a 3-6 month on alcohol consumption. It's wasted calories, and yes, it will probably hit you faster, and harder because your stomach size is considerably decreased, and transit time is much faster meaning the alcohol will hit your intestines faster. Alcohol, food, liquids, are NOT digested in the stomach, about 85% of digestion occurs in the intestine. So, your stomach has little to do with the processing of alcohol. All our big stomach did was make it easier to take bigger drinks, and it sloshed around in there for a little longer. Also, something to consider is that during the weight loss phase, you liver is working double time to process everything, and then you're going to throw alcohol into your system. Tasking it even more than before with alcohol. The liver is kind of the like the toxic waste plant of the body, everything we put in there is broken down through the liver, when we're shedding fat, it's got to process all of that, plus the Vitamins, medications we take. That fresh staple line would probably appreciate you not dumping harsh alcohol products in there. Not to mention the fact that alcohol is a diuretic and can cause dehydration which leads to other issues such as nausea, and vomiting. Party up all you want once your body recovers. I'm a very social drinker, but I didn't bother with alcohol until I was at goal. If you insist on drinking, I would recommend at least trying it at home, and not indulging in public the first time. Many people report getting drunk very quickly post-op on a small amount of alcohol. Being the life of the party is not being the idiot that gets drunk after 2oz of a gin and tonic and acting like a moron. -
No support from boyfriend and family
Tiffykins replied to bikerchick519's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Sometimes you just have to realize that you are doing this for YOU, and no one else. I realize it's great to have that support, but some people just won't get on board with your decision. We're all here for you, and lean on your daughter for support. -
my doctor told me to stop taking vitamins!!!
Tiffykins replied to italianlady13's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
A lot of Vitamins are NOT fat soluble, and the ones that we really need are Water soluble so you'll be dumping those regardless of how much fat you have to lose. There's no way that I'd stop taking the bare minimum of a multi with Iron, and the sublingual B12. B12 is water soluble, and our bodies can not absorb it properly since the intrinsic factor has been removed with the big part of the stomach. You can get deficient very quickly in B12 and then playing catch up is not any fun. This explains the difference between fat and water soluble. . . Also, remember this is for normal anatomy people. We've altered our parts, and need to compensate for that especially during the limited food intake stage. -
Possible proof of very long term success
Tiffykins replied to FishingNurse's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Yep, there are 1000s upon 1000s of stories very similar to your mom's story. It's one of the biggest factors I considered when I chose VSG. Many congrats to your mom on her continued health ! ! ! -
I fainted because of VSG?
Tiffykins replied to Norman's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Google this - Orthostatic hypotension The receptors for blood pressure are in our necks. Upon standing quickly from sitting or lying position, our bodies freak out especially when we've dropped a quick 20-30lbs and since most of that is Water weight, we have to increase fluids, and watch your sodium content. Our bodies need sodium, and a lot of those liquids don't offer good sodium content. We need a minimum of 1500mg per day of sodium. -
It's Water weight. I know that doesn't make it better, but it's pretty common around this time for most of us. There's no way you've gained 2lbs of fat. Your body is changing, and trying to figure out what's going on. If you've amped up exercise/working out, even just walking more, couple that with the heat, you're retaining water. It'll come off ! ! !

what are sliders?
Tiffykins replied to losingitin2012's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sliders are anything that can be chewed down, or swallowed without much effort. Usually those foods are calorie dense and nutrient lacking. Pudding, yogurt, any liquid, soups, chips, crackers, pretzels, potatoes are all examples of sliders. For some of us, sliders change. Bread items were difficult for me to eat the first year. Bread is now a slider a for me especially toasted breads like pita, naan, tortillas. I still can't eat a lot of bread, but it goes down way easier than it did early out. Chips, crackers, and pretzels are super sliders for me. I can easily eat 12-20 crackers and not feel restriction. -
Help! I have the sleeve scheduled but read on the Picilation (sp) board that Picilation is the way to go?
Tiffykins replied to Pinkbetty's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It wasn't an option for me. I already had a band and was revising. The few things I read on it back then was not all that positive. There is nothing safe about messing with stomach tissue. I know that sounds harsh, but the scar tissue from the band made me realize that it's just not an organ to mess with in those regards. Here's some topics you might want to read through: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/20633-failed-gastric-plication-to-gastric-sleeve/ http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/19306-to-the-emergency-room/ http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/14816-gps-update-important-new-information/ -
