Sorry the doctor was so rude to you. I sometimes think that surgeons do try to sway you into going the route that they feel comfortable with rather than which operation is actually best for the patient. There are pros and cons for each individual...some people may benefit more from a surgery other than the band. But, as far as dismissing it as a failure in the US...that's a load of crap. You're right...there are tons of people on this site and others who are making huge progress with their bands. So, I'd do exactly as you are...take what that person said with a grain of salt and make your own conclusion about the band. Ugh...some people!!
  3. I have four herniated discs in my lower lumbar and although those will never heal, the pain has gotten so much better now. My back used to freak out and I would get the sensation that two discs just clinked against eachother and it was excruciating. I also would have terrible sciatica and pain that would last for days. I did injections in my back which seemed to help a little but the steroids in the darn shots made me gain so much more weight which ultimately added to the problems. My point is...the surgery helped me break the cycle of exercise...hurt back again...gain weight. The cycle was broken! I was able to lose enough weight in a short enough time to start making a real difference in my back pain. Back pain, as you know, is tricky. Once you've messed up your back there really isn't a way to fix it. But, you can make real strides toward getting things in control. That's where I am. I haven't shed a tear from back pain for months now. It depends on your specific problems so I can't promise but...I can say that I suspect your back will become much more tolerable and manageable when some weight comes off. I'm looking forward to your success and to finding some relief from your pain. I definately, definately understand where you're coming from!

    GERD and the Lap Band

I'm sorry you are experiencing this. I always thought GERD improved after the band...it did for me. Have you spoken with your band doctor about this?

  8. I went through this same thing. I believe it was from anethesia because one day I was a crying mess and the next I was back to normal. All in all it lasted about 2 weeks. For me, I don't believe it was mourning food or stress from surgery...I really believe it was something hormonal or chemical based in my body. If it doesn't improve in a week or two you may want to talk to someone just to be safe. Good luck and happy recovery!

I'm late but...put down that spaghetti Josette!! Actually, I hope the ear infection is getting better. Indianlight-sorry to hear about your cough. Keep us posted and take care of yourself. Tis the time of year for germs! I'm not 100% myself right now. My coworker has been terribly sick and our desks are very close to eachother...I hope I'm not getting what she has. I just came back from shopping...I fit into a pair of 20's tonight! I can't believe it. I don't remember ever stopping there on my way up the scale so I'm excited that I have made this goal!!

    Ammonia smell during exercise?

Thanks for the info Coltonwade. I'll check out those sites. Beamer...I had the same fear as you about "having that thing inside me" but I cannot feel it and don't even realize it's there. As far as being safe...compared to what? The gastric bypass?...yes definately. Remaining obese?...yes definately. You will need to discuss your health issues with your doctor who will run all necessary tests to ensure you come through surgery just fine. Good luck.
  12. I've gotta fly next month for work. I've been working my butt off these last few months but am still scared to death that I won't fit into the seat. Has anyone else flown weighing 290? I read that the seats have a width of 17 inches on average. That is not very big at all...my butt is a lot wider than this! Oh my, what did I get myself into??? Any helpful advice, suggestions (other than lose 50 pounds in the next few weeks!) My flights are short, domestic flights with no first-class, just coach. :help: PS-What would I do without you guys? This is the only place in the world I feel safe enough to post a question like this and show my true weight!

Koala-Congratulations!!!!!!! We definately get the significance of this milestone and you deserve to Celebrate. Candy-I'm so sorry you are having problems right now but it seems like you have things under control and that is hugely important...you know what the problem is (no restriction) and how to fix it (fill) so you're ahead of the game! As far as worrying about something being wrong...it's a natural reaction. I've wondered the same each time I go through a rough patch but most likely things are OK in there and your body is just being stubborn. Trust me...you'll make it and when you do we'll all be here to welcome you!! Just try to hang in there until the 31st!!

Way to go Libra! I also was weary of being out of the woods until I got out of the 290's. I didn't 100% count myself a member of Twoterville until I reached that goal just because I wanted to make sure there was a big enough distance from Threetown!! So, enjoy it...I'd say you're an official member of Twoterville and you can sell your house in Threetown to someone else who may be hoping to move in real soon! Good job!
  15. When I was a newbie I also felt a weird nausea type feeling when hungry. Part of it was, just like you all have guessed, due to not having enough calories. But, I think a little of it was just because it took a couple weeks before my new tummy healed. Even though you're post-op by a few weeks, it still takes your insides awhile to get used to being operated on and to having the band in place. Unless the feeling actually makes you feel like getting sick then I'd say this is pretty normal. It went away for me and I never actually got sick from it. Protein shakes will help get some good calories/protein into you without making your belly work too hard and should help relieve this feeling. Although I have to mention that during this phase soy-based protein shakes seemed harder to digest so I stuck with whey-based protein shakes which are just as good and easier on your belly. Good luck all!

Josette, no worries! There's plenty of room in Twoterville and you'll be there in no time! Molly, how are you feeling? Now that you're on break from school, are you becoming less stressed? I hope it's going well. Thanks guys for the support as always! I am getting back on track. I was on such a good routine and life has been crazy this past month which made me realize that real life makes it hard to stay focused. This is something I'll continue to work on. We're all doing great and I'm proud of us all!
  17. You just need to be yourself and answer any question honestly. They're not trying to find reasons to deny surgery. They're just trying to make sure you understand what will be expected of you and whether or not you're prepared to handle all of the changes. You'll do fine!

    Road to "TWOterville"

Hey guys! I had company for the past week and haven't been online. But, I read up from where I left off and y'all have been busy bees!! Molly, I can totally relate to this whole getting off track thing. I don't know what the heck is going on with me. I am eating like I was never banded. I am disappointed with myself. Not exercising and eating way too much junk. Is anyone else around the 6 month mark?? Is this a normal phase you go through once you've been banded awhile? Or, do I just need someone to kick my buns?
  19. The only thing that comes to mind is to remind you that you don't have to get a fill. I got the impression that you still feel pretty tight and that's fine...perhaps you don't need a fill yet? It's OK to wait until you actually need one. Getting the fill will be the easy part, but living with a tight band won't be fun at all.
  20. I echo this one and add... *I've learned that developing a schedule for eating and working out becomes really important toward keeping me on track. *I've learned that food is food and not a form of entertainment.
  21. They're different weigh ins. It looked like everyone else was doing it too.

You're too funny!! Now, that's dedication...taking a minute before running out the door! Way to go...you will be moving in any day now. Drink lots of water and do a few jumping jacks and you'll be in Twoterville before you know it! Congratulations!

Well, we've started a new month. How about a check-in for our challenge? Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to start a "to go" column. For example, right now I still have 28lbs "to go". I have taken off our "current weight" column because who wants to keep reliving those numbers? Not me!! That's history. Let's focus on where we're going! So, lay it on me!
