I had tried many diets for the last 10 years, to no avail. I am not a person that has been overweight all my life--on the contrary, I have been underweight most of my life, only gaining weight in the last 10 years dues to a metabolic problem (caused by thyroid cancer). At this point, even on very restricted calories, I gain weight quickly and have the devil of the time losing it! I was getting sick and tired of being overweight and hungry all the time, dieting all the time, and still gaining weight. I opted for the lap band as a way to help me keep my caloric intake in check without the pain of hunger every day and the work of counting calories all of the time. It's taken six months to get the right amount of fill in my band to make any difference to my eating at all (as I wasn't eating much to begin with), but from my fill in June, I finally got restriction for the first time, and it is very helpful, fully what I had hoped for when I got the surgery. I can now eat three very small meals a day without feeling hungry in between. So far, restriction this hasn't resulted in any weight loss, but it has eliminated the gain that I was previously experiencing, so for that I am glad.
