    April 2006 Bandits September Challenge

I have officially met the September Challenge! Since I started an exercise regimen on 9/11, I have lost 10.8 lbs. As posted yesterday, exercise has also contributed significantly to getting off ALL my meds (blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes). And finally, but certainly not least, as a result of all this moving around, I feel terrific! I'm a New Woman. Diet, exercise, lap band. That's the ticket! September Challenge = 15 days, 27 sessions 1) 9/11: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 2) 9/12: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim 3) 9/13: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 4) 9/14: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim 5) 9/15: 30-min treadmill, 30-min lap swim 6) 9/18: 1-hr movement class 7) 9/19: 1-hr yoga class 8) 9/20: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 9) 9/21: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim 10) 9/22: 30-min lap swim 11) 9/25: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 12) 9/26: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim 13) 9/27: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 14) 9/28: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim 15) 9/29: 30-min treadmill, 30-min lap swim

    April 2006 Bandits September Challenge

Today is my five-month bandiversary (you too, Susan!), and I have some exciting news to report. Not only am I down 75 lbs as of today (hooray!), but my doctor took me off ALL my medications! -- for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. My blood pressure and cholesterol numbers are now optimal, and I am managing Type 2 diabetes by diet and exercise alone! In fact my doctor remarked that exercise is more beneficial in treating insulin resistance than any medicine available. WOW! I'm so glad that I joined the September Challenge, because it has paid off BIG-TIME!!! Only one more day to go to meet the Challenge: September Challenge 1) 9/11: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 2) 9/12: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim 3) 9/13: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 4) 9/14: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim 5) 9/15: 30-min treadmill, 30-min lap swim 6) 9/18: 1-hr movement class 7) 9/19: 1-hr yoga class 8) 9/20: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 9) 9/21: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim 10) 9/22: 30-min lap swim 11) 9/25: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 12) 9/26: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim 13) 9/27: 1-hr movement class, 30-min lap swim 14) 9/28: 1-hr yoga class, 30-min lap swim
  3. Today is my five-month bandiversary, and to celebrate, I had my fourth fill. According to the doctor's scale, I have lost exactly 75 lbs! Hooray for me! My BMI is down 12 points. And here's the best possible news: I am no longer on ANY of my medications -- for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. I am managing Type 2 diabetes by diet and exercise alone, and my blood pressure and cholesterol numbers are now optimal. Wow, I owe it all to the lap band!
  4. This is a big day for me! It's my five-month bandiversary, and I've lost 75 lbs!!! Why NO caffeine?

The nutritionist persuaded me to give up coffee for several of the reasons already listed, and I did so for a few weeks post-op, with no apparent benefit. So now I'm back to a cup or two a day, certainly not an excessive amount. I'm just not into keeping myself in a state of constant self-denial. In fact that has never worked for me in the past, and I inevitably succumbed to eating things I REALLY shouldn't. I mean, I've already changed my eating habits significantly by giving up so many foods I used to love but which are clearly the enemy of weight loss. Coffee, on the other hand, has ZERO calories; it makes me feel good, perks me up a bit; it tastes warm, rich and comforting; it has no apparent ill effects on me; it does not keep me awake at night; it does not upset my stomach. Sorry, but I'm going to keep on drinking it no matter what the food nazis say.

11 down, 4 to go. I can do this! In fact I'm quite liking the way I feel after a movement class and a daily lap swim. My life tends to be otherwise very sedentary, so this feels great! Boo, that's great news! Maybe moving down that one pound will be like a dam breaking, and you'll continue to lose more consistently, without a lengthy, demoralizing plateau. Size 12, here you come!

Thanks for the good words, guys. Yikes, Julie, I can't believe you can do 72 minutes on the elliptical! I tire easily on that thing, after maybe 10 minutes or so. Plus the mental boredom of the same movement for that length of time would do me in. Do you read, watch TV, listen to music while exercising?

Apparently the plateau/pause that I was on has broken big-time. Yesterday I reported on a one-day weight loss of 3.6 lbs. Well this morning the scale yielded another 3-lb loss for a total of 6.6 lbs in two days. I'm so excited, and I have a new ticker. Hooray! I was faithful in exercising every day this week, and now with just one full week left in September, I know that I'll be able to meet the Challenge. I've noticed a big change in flexibility and balance with just two weeks of movement and yoga classes. But most beneficial has been the simple desire to get off my butt and move around more.

You betcha. Especially mine. After going for years without a scale, cuz I really didn't want to know how much I weighed, I finally bought a new one in honor of my banding -- a VERY ATTRACTIVE [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000245PDG/102-6727335-3514511?ie=UTF8%3Cbr%20/%3E]Tanita digital scale.[/ame] It has turned out to be excessively evil, a lying devil that NEVER gives the same weight twice in a row, even if it's just 10 seconds later. And the weight goes up or down (mostly up, it seems) by as much as a pound or two. I should have returned it, but alas I didn't, and now I'm stuck with it. Like I said, it's very attractive.

Oh yeah, me too. I keep track of my weight on a daily basis, plus what I eat and how much I exercise. I admit, it's a bit obsessive, but what the hell, it's working. Keeping a detailed record of my progress has been very useful, and it definitely helps me to make wise food choices.
