Hi Chloe! I just completed my search for a surgeon and went thru the referral process: First of all, I have an HMO. My PCP is always hounding me about the weight, but never mentioned Banding. So, I too got sick of the cycle ..gain ..lose..gain more. Hungry all the time, and went online to find out more. I found the Info Sessions for 3 centers here in the Boston and over the past 2 months. I also watched the Brigh's video online of the procedure being done. I felt that particular center was for me. I then went online to see what facilities were accepted by my HMO and found that they were all on the Centers of Excellence list. Then I gave my insurance a call to see if the procedure was completely covered. Then I called the Brigh and set up an initial consult with Dr Robinson. Finally I called my PCP and requested a referral which was not faxed until 2 days before the appt.(the girl in referrals does things last minute and it drives me nuts). I did not have to even speak to my PCP, but the request just went through the referral dept. Now I am on my way...lose 10 lbs and then return to Dr Robinson..

    Interesting Link

I found this link on another Band forum. I thought others just beginning this journey like I am and are not aware of the many resources there are out there would like to add it to their RSS feed or get email notifications for updated episodes. Band Banter Talk Radio

Get ready..Thursday can be counted in hours away now. Please call and get another EKG before you have your Band...or at least let the docs know..especially the anesthetist. That's not something I would ever let go unmentioned...regardless of how much I desired Banding. I have Dr Robinson as my doctor and I feel very comfortable having him do the procedure.

Just came back from my initial appointment and am definitely a candidate for Banding. It was so good to see things like ample-friendly furniture in the office suite. But the gown I was given was twiggy sized. I usually bring my own 2x from home, but figured there would be one there that fit..after all..it is supposed to be for fattys. WRONG. The dear doc whipsnout thew first one his hands found in the drawer..small! So, I put it on backwards and just lifted it to under the chest area. ( I had some breast surgery a few years ago and am self conscious about the scarring) Other than that, the exam went well and I now have to schedule for some studies..(apnea, etc) and return within 3-5 weeks minus about 10 lbs!!!! So, the journey has begun.

    Massachusetts:Exercise DVDs

Hi tinywishes! I have a few of those Leslie Sansone videos and when I used them before I got my treadmill, they were fantastic! Sound like a good sale! As for Biggest Loser, the show...I see some really big team members there working out and I can't watch the show except for the weigh ins. I keep worrying that one of them will drop from a massive heart attack from over stress while doing those exercises. I often wonder if they end up having WLS when they go home because the entire world knows that if they don't keep up the exercises AND increase it as the body gets used to it, they definitely will gain the pounds back again. I think a lot of elective surgeries go on after they return back home..especially if they are under contract with the show to maintain , return after so many months and model . JMO

Now see...I always thought that 'Upper GI' and 'Upper GI Endoscopy' were one and the same procedure. Now I see that they are 2 different tests. It pays to ask questions ..and takes away a lot of worries too!

    Fiber

I am Pre-Band. In order to bring my cholesterol down I eat oatmeal every morning, but especially for colon health. With the Band, is something like Benefiber which can be disolved in Water and mushies allowed in the diet to keep one regular seeing that thick textured food is scant. Or perhaps the Benefiber expands in the pouch)I have no clue) and it is not allowed?? Something like Activia is not recommended since smooth foods are not filling and have calories. How do you get your Fiber to maintain colon health? singingintherain

Another dumb question I just have to ask....were you required to have an endoscopy and if so, did they give you a sedative, or just ram that tube and camera down your pipes??!! Scared of that test:crying:!!!

I feel your disappointment, but try to hang in there until you get word. That must be so disheartening after getting all psyched up for it. But..it is not over for good..it will happen soon. Hang in there!

Sleep Study! (said with fear) Does everyone have to have one of those? I'd fail miserably! If I know there is a camera on me while I am trying to fall asleep, ..that's it...I'm awake the whole night. How do I know that will happen if I've never had one? Because I can't even drop off if the shade is up in the room! I get the creeps. I'd fail one of those unless I snuck in some ether!

Dagnabbit! I was all dressed and ready to go out the door for the meeting and things came up and I couldn't go. What a disappointment. Anyways..I still do have my initial consult coming up at the Faulkner in a few weeks and am so excited about this journey I am on to take care of myself for a change!(always caring for others, aren't we gals?) What can I expect to happen at a first appt with the Doc? Exam? Talk? Tests? I have no idea, but my imagination sure can go to town! singingintherain

    Day Surgery?

Hi! I went to an informative meeting last night at a Boston hospital and heard more about banding and bypass. I was shocked, however, to hear that the stay at that particular hospital for Banding was "same day". Are there any on the forum who went home the same day? I really would prefer to stay and be watched at least overnight with my high blood pressure. So tomorrow I am going to another facility to see what their policies are. Also, (as I briefly mentioned in another thread) the one last night required a 10% pre-op weight loss before they will even touch you. If I could lose 10% of my weight with all the programs I have tried, I wouldn't even be considering Banding. Is that a requirement for ALL facilities? After hearing about GB and LB, the LP surgery is definitely the one I am going to pursue. singingintherain

    Day Surgery?

I know! If I could lose 10% of my weight, I wouldn't even be on these boards and going to the info groups inquiring about the Band ..or any WLS matter of fact. But want to hear something ? Two years ago I had breast reduction surgery..6 hours on the table. They amputate both breasts and reform them...sounds severe, I know, but that is what they do. (I was very large). Well they wanted to keep me 1 night and send me home the next day! Muscular Pain like you wouldn't believe. I requested an extra day and it was granted..no questions asked! Why? The Dr recommended it. If we ask, then perhaps the surgeon can suggest an overnight if we feel we need it for discomfort, Bl Pressure watch, etc. Well, I have gained 40 pounds since that reduction 2 yrs ago and...YEP...they are almost the same size they were before the 6 hour surgery! Drawer full of unfitting bras and a closet full of clothes in 3-4 different sizes! Now's the time to stop this cycle. but I'm still singingintherain!
